big game between the two top teams in region, US has really struggled there in the past, hopefully Jozy gets the start
I'm pretty sure that the US will win this one. I would love to see the US get into the championship game of the world cup.
This is a big game for sure. The US has never won a WC Qualifier in Ricardo Saprissa Stadium, in fact we only have one tie in 17 games. I can see us possibly play a 4-5-1. There are a lot of defensive question marks and I can see the extra mid helping out and Landon playing pretty much a free role. I look for us to look to play a lot of d and counter attack. My guess is a 1-1 tie.
lets not get ahead of ourselves.... coasta rica <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< england/spain/portugaul/france/germany/netherlands if we cant win this game convincingly then
i wouldnt just yet, they arent the best competition but they are still a good team who should be at the next world cup, and its played on a crappy surface in a shitty stadium with crazy fans, so even if the US loses all hope is not lost
Exactly. Saprissa is a straight up shit box. Here is a quote from Ives Galarcep: "I saw Estadio Saprissa for the first time on Monday and what I saw wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Rather than some cathedral to the game, or imposing structure, what I found was a rundown concrete structure that looked more like a post-nuclear ruin than famous stadium (though the inside of the stadium is in better shape than the exterior). It is what Thunderdome would have been if the characters in the Mad Max movie played soccer instead of fight to the death. All that said, it is clear as day why this place has been such a tough destination for Costa Rica opponents. The imposing stands on either side of the field shoot up in a steep angle you don't see at many American stadiums, which coupled with the extremely close proximity to the field, gives players the sense that they are surrounded by walls of screaming fans. If not for the 10-foot high fencing surrounding the field, pitch invasions would probably be a regular occurrence." Another: "The turf at the Estadio Saprissa is awful. Imagine if you took the turf from Giants Stadium about eight years ago and laid it out at a gas station for about five years. Pour on a few years of rain and that's the bloated and tattered mess of a turf field Saprissa has. It bears very little resemblance to the turf you'd see at Qwest Field or even the current turf at Giants Stadium."
Official Line up Howard; Wynne, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Beasley; Mastroeni, Bradley, Torres; Dempsey, Donovan, Altidore no Ching, due to hamstring injury, the Gringo Torres gets the start which is great to see, this is a big game for Jozy to see if he can play up top by himself and if i lose power tonight i will end someones life
I am definitely surprised to see Wynne start. I would have figured that Cherundolo would have started due to the fact that he he has a lot more experience. It looks like they will be playing a 4-3-2-1 formation. Like you said this is a great chance for Jozy to prove himself. Also do you know who made the bench? Here is a pick of Estadio Ricardo Saprissa:
maybe our fastest player other than landy, he is an incredible athlete, but tactically pretty poor, he is young and inexperienced, but he did shut down Royston Drenthe, a very talented young winger who plays for Real Madrid, in the Olympics I actually expect a 4 3 3 Wynne Gooch Boca Beasley ----------Pablo--------------- -----Bradley---Torres-------- Dempsey---------------Landon -----------Jozy---------------
I enjoy watching soccer ( at least EPL, that's all I've seen ) but don't know much about the strategy of the game. Someone fill me in on what are some good formations or plays or something. I assume a 4-3-2-1 is more offensively inclined than a 4-5-1 or whatever else was mentioned earlier but other than common sense I don't know much.
4-5-1 would have four defenders, 5 midfielders that would generally play straight a cross or 4 across with a holding midfielder playing slightly back. 4-3-2-1 has three mids that play more centrally in the midfield and has two attacking mids playing behind a forward. There are so many variations on how either is played that I really couldn't explain it.
Gotcha. Do teams usually stick with a certain formation or does it change throughout the game ( or against different opponents )?
I know nothing about soccer but watch the World Cup and all of the qualifiers. I just hope we fucking win.
its broken down like this on the roster------USA (7), England (5), Germany (2), France (2), Denmark (2), Sweden (1), Belgium (1), Mexico (1), Scotland (1), Spain (1)
The quotes are from a blogger and columnist on ESPN, Ives Galarcep. He writes the best US soccer based blog IMO. He follows the USMNT as well as the MLS. He breaks a pretty good amount of US soccer stories and is pretty objective in his pieces. Check out his blog at: www.soccerbyives.net
costa rica dude split two of our players about 25 yards out then put one over the top over our keepers head
yeah fuck this, lets just pack up and then bomb the fuck outta costa rica for their insolence. Fucking costa rican faggots who just run around playing this pussy ass flopping game all goddamn day.
Okay maybe it is just my lack of soccer knowledge but is Costa Rica a tough place to play or the announcers just playing it up?
Very tough place to play. Stadium is a shit hole, crowd is right on top of you, super shitty turf, and Costa Rica is a pretty good team.
they all just play scared, its pathetic to watch, i feel like it will take just one positive moment for things to change, and once it does they can get back into it, its like they dont want to be there
