This might be exactly what USC needed. Urban is probably the only coach that can revive them and with Daniels going down, it seems likely that Helton will be fired.
It would actually not be a terrible thing for Nd if sc was good again. Assuming Nd can be good for a while now. Bad news is that when sc is good Nd sucks and vice versa
Oregon's "run" ended the moment Marcus Mariota played his last game. Stanford has had a great run by their standards but it's not like they knocked off any real powerhouses in that span. Their Rose Bowl wins were against second-tier teams like Wisconsin and Iowa, that doesn't carry the same weight as beating an Ohio State
Not to mention ESPN hype the SEC is top heavy and that’s all that matters to everyone. Because they are so top heavy the mediocre teams get a pass.
well to be fair in the era of the CFB Playoff the top teams are all that matter. There is considerably less prestige for the former BCS bowls (when they aren't involved in the playoff, of course) and now it's all about being part of that final 4, and in this era of the Final 4 the Pac 12 is lagging behind at having credible representation.
My point is that when SC and Oregon were good it’s about them. If Washington and Utah are really good this year it will be about them the other teams won’t get any respect because of that. Unlike the SEC that because UGa and Bama are great that means the rest of the league is too. Oregon played well last night but it will be all about Auburn and nothing about the Ducks. This is coming from a fuck the pac12 type guy. Fuck conference pride but it does get tiresome to see the constant suck off the sec gets.
As an Ohio State fan, I hate to type it, but I’d be more surprised if he wasn’t USC’s HC next year than if he is. He hasn’t exactly shut down the rumors
Time is a flat circle, he will go to sc. be successful for 4-5 years then shit will hit the fence and he will retire again.
I guess I view CFB less in terms of conferences these days and more in terms of A. teams that can win (and have won) titles and B. everyone else. Even when teams like Washington or Notre Dame have great regular seasons it's hard to get too enthused knowing they probably won't be able to conquer 2 teams from group A consecutively. 10 years ago if an undefeated Washington was leapfrogged by a 1-loss Georgia team I would probably be pissed, nowadays I'd probably be okay with it. So yeah I'm probably part of the problem you're referring to now (I don't work for ESPN btw) Spoiler or do I?
just continuing this discussion... -the playoffs have been awful from a "conference strength" discussion because now all that matters is the top four teams. the ACC has been as bad - and perhaps worse - than the pac-12 but clemson has been elite so they receive minimal criticism. -as mentioned, the playoff games have diminished the standing of the other new years bowls. i personally still care about the rose bowl (perhaps because my team isn't a playoff contender?) and conference winners but the media coverage certainly isn't equitable. -this year, the conference seems fairly strong overall though i doubt USC, Oregon, Washington, or Utah (or anyone else) are playoff contenders. but those four plus Stanford, Wazzu, and Colorado seem like a stronger bunch than we've had in recent years. for all the LULZ PAC 12 tweets after UCLA lost to Cincy, i'm not sure the conference isn't one of the better ones this year.
That was...unexpected. Slovis had an epic night, but I’m gonna hold off getting too pumped until I see how he holds up during the next few weeks. Harrell’s O is legit tho. I think I speak for all of us when I say we could get use to watching that every Sat. Still think Clay is put out to pasture if Urban wants the gig. The question is does he? Still can’t see him being done at his age. SC job is prob the only one that fits. Unlikely he goes back to SEC/Big10. Nor does anything in the ACC/Big12 make sense. Kelly not relinquishing ND anytime soon. So it’s usc or NFL or hanging out with Matt& Reggie for the next few years...
Of course you fire Helton if urban wants in, no brainer And I hope I am wrong but I think Nd would not hire urban Meyer on any circumstances.
As I said, the question is: does he? He may really be done with college or want to try his hand at the pros. I do agree bout ND; that ship has sailed.
I think he will go to usc, I almost want to root for sc to win a lot of games so they keep Helton long enough. Urban will coach again, he is like Michael corleone going to Sicilia for a few years until he comes back chips in hand.
What makes you think, considering their history, that USC will ever hire a top name coach? No way he lands here.
But a rumor by who? Internet message boards, I assume. To my knowledge, there has been nothing of substance to this rumor.
Urban’s pattern is he retires, spends a year at home with Shelley, and realizes he’d rather die than deal with that for the rest of his life. Now he doesn’t even have any kids at home as a buffer. I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s announced as USC’s new HC before the end of the season.
Your point about the ADs incompetence is well taken, but this is a unique situation. You have a HoF coach spending the season in LA while sharing a podium with two ex-players each week. If he wants the job, his agent will get it for him. This won’t be like our other searches were we had to fly around interviewing ppl who currently have jobs or hire an existing staff member. The off-the-field stuff could present an obstacle, but the last decade plus has been so rough for everybody that I’m betting the boosters ultimately force the issue, media criticism be damned. Guess we’ll see what happens...
I guess that’s it for Clay. Hard to imagine the “USC brass” does this only to announce he’s “going to be our coach for years.”
This is a good test for the kid. Pretty clear that Stanford was definitely not a true barometer of a quality opponent.
Call me crazy, but I feel like we're gonna win tomorrow night. Can’t explain it, and I know we’re usually bad on Thursday/Friday night games, but I gotta hunch.
Harrell's play-calling isn't perfect (last week was not something he's gonna have on his highlight reel) but goddamn is he way better than Tee Martin
They have top 5 talent (and have had it for Helton’s entire tenure) there’s no reason that they have been so terrible until now.
