If you want to hear the WOAT play by play, go find the Legion FC vs Louisville match from this weekend. IDK what happened to our normal dude, but this guy sucks so bad. I feel like Legion is in trouble. We moved to Protective (big downtown football stadium) and the attendance crashed after the first season. Ticket $ went up a good bit, but concessions are 3x what they were at the old (UAB rented) stadium. Just a mess and sucks for everyone. Soehn seemed DOA, but they've kept him. Very conflicted as I want to see the club do well, but it's a mess now.
What was the deal with moving stadiums? Optically that UAB stadium seemed perfect sized and now Legion are like the USL equivalent of NE Revolution playing at Gillette. I'll guess some shadiness with the city/county for them wanting another tenant at the tax payer funded new stadium?
The Legion front office got pissy with them, as I understand. The UAB stadium was great except that it drained VERY poorly. But rather than talk to UAB and see if they could somehow remake the field, they just picked up their ball and went to Protective. Incredibly dumb and short-sighted.
Phoenix is having struggles as well. Ones that I fear are becoming existential. Crowds are pretty poor despite moving close to downtown PHX/on the light rail after having three different stadium sites in four seasons. This is the third year at the current location but there are still no prospects of replacing the pop-up stadium with a long-term structure and cementing a truly permanent location. The current land lease is from Sky Harbor which they plan to eventually use for something airport-related so this is unlikely to be a permanent site even if there were plans. The front office has been terrible with fan engagement after it being such a strong priority right after they rebranded the club. They have never been able to recapture the atmosphere that existed with Dollar Beer Nights at the original stadium location. There was a legitimately strong fan culture around the club and now that's just gradually evaporated. After having season tickets for 6 years we gave them up after 2023 and haven't been to a match since. That's mostly due to it being difficult to take a 1 and 3 year old on a good night, let alone when it's still 100+ at kickoff. But even if it wasn't a constraint I don't really feel like making the effort to go sit in a pop-up stadium on a regular basis anymore since the light rail doesn't reach us. It would seem like Phoenix would be a shoe-in for the new first division but without any plan for a soccer-specific stadium I really wonder how much longer the club can just twist in the wind with no permanent home going on a decade.
That's badass. I hope it works out well over the long run. Pretty neat that there were soccer events there before the A's even moved in.
Incredible banter or classless? I lean towards banter but curious on other opinions. On one hand, Oakland fans have no control over their franchises, just like any other city's fans. On the other, it's talking shit about a baseball team, completely different sport. Not like they're directly taking shots at the Roots or something
Most matches are on there. Some CBS Golazo (I think it’s free but I have Paramount+ so I’m not positive of that) and CBSSN. A few on big CBS like this one.
