A merger of the two Confederations will never happen, and honestly why would the U.S. and Mexico want to anyways? We're both basically a lock to qualify every WC, which wouldn't be the case in CONMEBOL even if there were like eight bids for the new region. Besides, I doubt FIFA would ever approve a merger of two separate regions.

Best case scenario would be to move the Gold Cup to even years and the U.S. and Mexico can send their "A" teams down to Copa America, or could even make it a true Copa Americas and invite other CONCACAF teams like Honduras, CR, etc to make it a 16 team field.

This will only happen if it makes Jack Warner more $$$ because that would mean only one Gold Cup every four years as opposed to one every two years.

Cobi Jones, Eddie Pope, and Earnie Stewart all elected to the U.S. Soccer HOF.

Pope is the best defender we've had, and possibly a top 5 player ever for the U.S. Turned down numerous offers in Europe to stay in MLS and help it grow, which he scored the game winning goal in OT the inaugural season. Unfortunately his last USMNT moment really was a bs 2nd yellow to Italy.

USA-Belgium set for Sept. 6 (Updated and Confirmed)

The long-rumored USA-Belgium friendly has yet to be announced by the U.S. Soccer Federation, but the Belgian FA isn't wasting time promoting the match, posting an announcement that the friendly is set for Sept. 6th in Brussels.

UPDATED- U.S. Soccer officials confirmed to Fox Soccer on Friday evening that the USA-Belgium friendly will take place and an announcement will take place next week.

If the friendly is finalized, it would give U.S. Soccer another tough test as Belgium boasts one of the best collections of young talent in Europe. Led by such standouts as Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Vincent Kompany, Belgium is currently ranked 35th in the world. USA is ranked 24th.

What do you think about a potential USA-Belgium friendly? Which players would you like to see called up for such a friendly?

Since it's in Europe and we don't seem to do so hot against similarly ranked or higher opponents from across the pond, I'll say 3-2 loss.

I think we could see a lot of Belgium's subs even though their big names should be there. They play a Euro qualifier a few days before, and I doubt they will play a lot of their starters against us in a meaningless friendly right after.

I hope we see a lot of newer guys, especially some Olympic eligible players. Wouldn't be surprised if Josh Gatt and Bobby Wood get their 1st cap for that game.

Jhon Kennedy Hurtado has said he would like to play for the US. If we could get this done he could potentially (should) start at CB for us. Dude is a force in the air.

He is a 27 year old MLSer who has never played at the senior level. I don't see why he should get any time over a guy like Omar Gonzalez, much less be a regular starter.

Sounds like Sebastian Letoux a few years back.

If he is 27, I think the process to get him a citizenship will take until he's 30, and by then it's not worth it anymore.

He was essentially discovered two years ago (along with Montero, as they played on the same team) and sat out last year with a knee injury. How much of him have you watched?

It's probably not going to work out because Hurtado is already 27 and isn't a citizen. He's no scrub, however, and as I already said he's a manchild in the aerial game.

We get it....he plays for Seattle, therefore he is hot shit the likes of which do not exist throughout the rest of the league or U.S. player pool.

Discovered in America, sure. Does Colombia not have a national football program? He is a very good MLS defender. I think a lot of people would prefer Gonzalez right now, especially when comparing aerial ability - to say nothing of the advantages of being 5 years younger and a citizen.

    :meh:

I want the best players to play and our backline is atrocious. Also: "It's probably not going to work out because Hurtado is already 27 and isn't a citizen."

Seattle has international players (Rosales - Argentina, Fernandez - Uruguay, Montero - Colombia) and yet our two best players are probably Alonso and Hurtado.

Go fuck yourself, just trying to bring some news into the USMNT thread.

That's the thing...Hurtado isn't better than Ream or Gonzalez and he doesn't have Boss's potential. He just plays for Seattle. How broken up were you when Zakuani decided he was Congolese?

Thank you for bringing this utterly exciting news to our attention, though.

Didn't realize you're being compensated $4 million to pop in tapes.

Zakuani could have made an immediate impact on the national team.

This might have been a witty retort if it were 6 months ago and you were defending Bob Bradley's theoretical decision to play him over Ream and Omar.

I don't think Ream is better than Hurtado, but I also don't believe it's worth naturalizing Hurtado at this point.

Zakuani is incredibly underrated but I don't know how much of an impact he'd make on the national team. Hopefully Mwanga goes the other way on his decision.

Zakuani could still play for the US, he only played in a friendly for Congo. He'd just be another young wing for us but I wouldn't mind having him in the player pool

As FC Nurnberg begin their preseason for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign, right back Timothy Chandler will be looking to build off an exceptional debut season.

Twelve months ago Chandler left Eintracht Frankfurt after being told he was no longer in the team's plans, before signing with Nurnberg. After initially excelling at the U-23 level, Chandler went with the first team on their winter trip to Turkey and impressed head coach Dieter Hecking which led to a quick debut in the second half of the season. The American was named to the Bundesliga team of the week multiple times and was one of the highest rated fullbacks playing in Germany since the start of 2011.

Now, after a month off for the offseason, Chandler insists he is healthy as Nurnberg's preseason camp enters into its eighth day in Austria and that a summer hiatus is part of the reason.

"I was injured towards the end of last season," Chandler told YA from Austria. "During the offseason I went on vacation and I feel okay now. I am ready to go."

On Sunday, Nurnberg played their first preseason match as they cruised to a comfortable 6-0 win over the lower division Austrian club SV Raika Längenfeld. Chandler played second half and was on the field for the final four goals.

This season will be an important one for the youngster as expectations will be much higher. Last season he took the Bundesliga by surprise and he frequently referred it as "a dream."

This year, however, will be one where he will look to show that he can turn in strong performances consistently throughout a long season. Chandler feels it will be difficult but he is confident in his ability.

"It will be difficult to keep that up from last year," Chandler discussed. "It will be a challenge and I will have to fully engage myself, focus, and play consistent games. Then we will see what happens."

Last year, Nurnberg finished in sixth place which was well above expectations for a club that has been relegated out of the Bundesliga twice in the last decade. They remained in contention for fifth place and a spot in the Europa League until the last few weeks of the season before tailing off at the end of April.

This season Chandler is confident that Nurnberg can again contend for a berth in European play with the Bundesliga now sending its top six teams to continental competitions.

"We are good enough," Chandler said confidently. "I like how the team is taking shape. We have a very good team and we are ready to contend again. Absolutely we can contend for spot [in European play] again. That is our goal and that's what we want to accomplish."

On the international front, Chandler's earned a call to the US national team for a pair of friendlies against Argentina and Paraguay in March. Chandler made his international debut in the game against Argentina and was on the field for the US team's equalizer in a 1-1 draw.

Back in May, US head coach Bob Bradley initially planned for Chandler to be on the team for the 2011 Gold Cup. Soon after, however, it was agreed that Chandler should be allowed to rest the injuries he picked up at the end of the last season instead of spending his entire off season playing for US team.

For Chandler, it was a very tough choice to not be with the US team at the Gold Cup. He watched all of the team's games and wished he was there to contribute.

"I watched the tournament," Chandler said of the Gold Cup. "It was very difficult for me not to go. I wanted to play for the United States, but I had to go with decision of the club. I was not fit at the time and was still recovering."

Now completely healed and ready to play, Chandler hopes that it won't be long before he can represent the United States again. The US is scheduled to play their next game against Belgium on September 6 in Brussels and Chandler hopes be a part of the team.

"If I am invited, I would love to play for the United States again," Chandler said. "I have a very good opinion of Bob Bradley as a coach. He brought me in back in March and I like playing under him along with the players on the US team."

Chandler was born in Frankfurt and is the son of an American soldier who was stationed in Germany. As a US-German dual citizen, Chandler played for Germany at the U-15 level but it was not a good experience for him. Since then he has never played for Germany again.

With his strong performances in the in the second half of the Bundesliga season, rumors have circulated that Chandler may not have chosen to play in the Gold Cup because he did not want to be permanently cap-tied to the United States and instead was holding out for an invitation to play for Germany.

In June, the German federation said that Chandler was not an option for them anymore in acknowledging that he wants to play for the United States.

In addition to the statements from the German federation, Chandler himself is very quick to halt the new rumors that have surfaced since the Gold Cup.

When he was in US national team camp last March, he told the media that he did not want to play for Germany. He is very insistent that this is still true and that his top international goal right now is to represent the US at the World Cup.

"No. That is absolutely not the reason why I missed the Gold Cup," Chandler stated emphatically. "It is my goal and dream to represent the United States at the 2014 World Cup. What I said in March is true. I will absolutely not play for Germany. There is no way that will happen."

Following preseason, Chandler and FC Nurnberg travel to take on Arminia Bielefeld in a German Cup mach on July 30. Nurnberg opens their Bundesliga season on August 6th when they face Hertha Berlin on the road.

Wonder who that team will be? I've got to think it will be a US based team and someone on the east coast to make travel easier from Ajax. DC would be my pick, with Philly and New York close behind.

Though Bornstein deserves it, Castillo is effectively calling out a teammate publicly, and I'll be interested to see how other USMNTers react to that if Castillo receives a call up. Should've just said something PC along the lines of "I felt I could've helped the team out there blah blah"
