I mean I wouldn’t leave the airport that’s for sure. You got the highest murder rate in the America’s right outside. People following garbage trucks for food.

But if there’s somewhere that’s safe in Caracas it’s the airport.

Fantastic. Yea the other options are a lot more expensive and I’m part of a 20 person group on this miserable endeavor so I basically just have to bail on them entirely to avoid this.

    Can’t wait.

Peru is so beautiful outside of Lima. Most biodiverse country in the world so definitely enjoy it. Hope you made a week out of it.

I’ve never been and I’ve heard nothing but entirely positive things.

Also it took me an absurd amount of work to get a reservation at central, and as a food obsessive person I would hate to miss going.

Yeah, while we're really stirring up the situation now, getting Venezuela to this crisis was all its own doing. It's almost like it's not a good idea to put a guy who didn't even graduate high school to run your country.

So on backpacking trips should I hit the north or south first.

I wish there was this much concern when Puerto Rico went without power for 11 months. Let’s stop pretending this is about helping people and not about finding an excuse to invade.

PR going without power was very well covered. As was the failure of the administration there.

However, bit of a difference. The “11 months” was for the last home to be reconnected. It was unacceptable but the people slobbering around Twitter on that point (and clearly where the poster above pulled it from) don’t mention that. Nor is it mentioned that it was a natural disaster that caused it. Yes there were failures before the hurricane and afterwards. But what has wholly caused this is incompetent government in a nation of abundant energy sources.

In terms of what “people didn’t care about”. Venezuela has since 2015 been in the top 2 counties that has had migration (and was until recently largely ignored by the press) with well over 3m now. In comparison, Syria (about double the migrants) was extensively covered by the world press. The difference? One is from a war torn mess of a country where you have a leader using chemicals weapons on citizens and another segment was ISIS. And again like the myopic PR comparisons, the Venezuelan crisis has been caused solely by incompetent governance from a country that should be very wealthy.

Migration from Syria has more to do with the US destabilizing the ME than it has to do with anything else, so please spare me your nonsense about people distorting information to make a point. Also stop pretending you give a shit about Venezuela and it’s people because when the US invades it and fucks it up like it did to Latin America in the 80s you will be the first one bitching about limiting the flow of refugees coming to the US.

All you fucking assholes have no idea how much the US has fucked over the rest of the world so educate yourself first before speaking on the subject.

    Ah yes fantastic.

More of the “blame the US” narrative.

The US makes plenty of shit decisions but it’s amazing how when people squeal about Trump and Russia how they are so decidedly in favour of Russian foreign policy.

It’s banal and childish College level analysis to always blame the US and be on the side of the other side. The US makes some alright foul ups, but are absolutely correct on the shambles of a Venezuelan regime. A regime some people continue to give soft cover to for their own bizarre reasons. The equivalent population fall in the US on what has happened in Venezuala is 30 something million. Because a government can not feed its population. It is a failed state.

What makes you think I didn’t have concern for what PR went through?

Policing the human rights matters people are interested in. Why does it bother you that I care about this issue?

I don't know if I'd call it an embargo because Venezuelan ships are still free to move about. It's a ban on doing business with PDVSA which starves the company that brings in the vast majority of income for Maduro to fund his regime. But it wouldn't have made any difference for the blackout.

The key thing is that you’re full of shit and you don’t actually care about Venezuela. And as little as you care about Venezuela you cared even less about PR.

They embargoed the money. The US is blocking Venezuela from using banks, so they can't sell the oil or purchase imports.

Right. To starve Maduro of cash to steal from the Venezuelan people and hopefully to cause enough military defections or pressure to force him out. There's no good reason for a bank to be doing business with PDVSA these days. Slowly tighten the screws until he gives up or is killed.

I’m from a country that experience the benevolence of US foreign policy several times, but when we had a brutal dictator who sent the military in to kill farmers with machetes the US provided the dictator with support. So how about you spare me the lecture about the benevolent US foreign policies and instead educate yourself on what really happens when the US “provides aid”.

Are you really asking why someone would come to the US after the US decimated their home country?

I know you’re being disingenuous but the answer is living in country that oppresses other countries is better than living in an oppressed country.

Also just as an FYI, living in a country doesn’t mean that I have to approve of everything they do, believe it or not it is possible to participate in a society and point out flaws in said society.

No one here is defending Maduro. They're opposing the US interfering in another country. Especially when past interference leads to leaders like Maduro taking over.

This is not a difficult concept.

I gave my perspective on it, I fail to see how the country of origin would change anything that I said. But the fact that you can’t tell which country I’m talking about proves my point, this is a recurring problem with the US foreign policies that people like you fail to acknowledge.

The fact I can't tell? There's plenty of people that can say my country got bombed by the US, I had to move.

But you're right, it's not inherently relevant. You don't have to disclose it.
