The tech board linked me to the porn board, so that was no help. Question is simply…. Is the Oculus Quest (head-set deal) worth buying? Is this going to be a “every house should have one” item that’s used by all? Last video game I owned was NHL 94 for Super Nintendo. That’s not a joke. I offer you a highly valued dblplay1212 NFT for your troubles:
Also, looking at the VR stuff lead me to the vids below from the Metaverse… Setting aside their jokes, seems inevitable people are going to become obsessed with the Metaverse and use it to replace real social interaction.
This shit has existed for years. The Sims online, Secondlife, and a whole slew of virtual communities have been host to people not wanting to go outside for years. Zuck sees the Metaverse as the shit from Ready Player One and it’s simply not happening. Unless you already spend too much fucking time on Facebook, you’re not logging in to Meta to replace real social interaction. VR games are moderately entertaining but still not that great of an experience outside of a couple hours of novelty. Mid 90s NHL games were the fucking ripe tits.
I doubt the Oculus becomes the dominant VR device, let alone in 1/3 of American households. You kinda answered this yourself with NHL 94. If you're a gamer or have kids, this maybe is on your radar. Still not a lot of games available. The offerings are similar to the early Nintendo Wii days. Two ppl on my dev team were "meeting" to play a round of golf yesterday though. Not sure the last time I played Golden Tee, but think I'd rather have a few beers and play that instead of headset golf. But sweet NFT. I'll add it to the blockchain for you now.
There's a newer version due soon which they are saying will be the dominant one, although at a higher price point. Will have higher resolution, eye tracking and more. I'm holding out for one of those (Project Cambria)
Meta is our client for the company I work for, so I manage a team that sells these things. They are selling like crazy. Literally cannot keep them in stock. I have one and use it a little. Golf + is pretty cool and Beat Saber is a lot of fun.
That's coming from our perspective as people born in the 80s. Not so sure about kids born recently. They are scared to talk on the phone. Studies report young people have sex less than previous generations. Eaten up with anxiety. Got used to going to school online during pandemic. Etc.
https://blog.playstation.com/2022/02/22/first-look-the-headset-design-for-playstation-vr2/ The Ps5 one looks pretty great. I’ll never give Facebook all the data so hoping that Sony has better privacy.
If you have friends that also have Quests they are insanely fun and my group of friends has like 8 people with them. We played the hell out of most of the games on there during lockdown. If you're not a gamer, there's still a lot of really cool shit on there, albeit some of the "experiences" like watching live sporting events and concerts from a VR POV from the front row of said events haven't been available due to the pandemic. Also if you're into board games at all, there's some really cool board games / party games that are always very entertaining to break out when company is over. There's a lot worse ways to spend $300
I've got one. Users Space and Taco Sa1ad also have one. If you're not a gamer, I'd wait on getting it. I'm a gamer, and even I don't play it enough. I use it mostly to entertain my nephews or to trip people out on Richie's Plank Experience. I think Echo, the Ender's Game game, is the best of the games I've played.
As someone who has used almost everything Oculus has to offer, I would say yes it's best use is for gaming. But I weirdly think the games that have been the best are simple and casual... and would really appeal to non-gamers just looking to have fun w family/friends. Favs-- Room: Dark Matter, Trover Saves the Universe, Demeo, Superhot, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
I can't use mine for more than 5-10 minutes without getting nauseous. I had played a decent amount of VR before purchasing and never had issues but for some reason the Quest gets me every time.
I really enjoy the table tennis/ping pong game. It's super fun to play when people are hanging out at your house. It's very fun...but I don't play it enough. I have like 4-5 games and I haven't really even explored 2 of them.
I have one and haven’t really played around with it enough to know what to do or play with it. I think if I really sit down and mess with it, it would be pretty fun.
I’ll be honest, I mistakenly thought it was around $900. At $300 it seems like a great purchase to have at the house. Every house will probably have one eventually at that price. Not a bad read: https://www.wsj.com/articles/meta-quest-2-review-metaverse-11645571617
a co-worker got an Oculus for his kid for Christmas, he uses it way more than his kid for porn reasons
I mostly agree with Fusiontegra about the meta verse. That concept is nothing new and has been around for a couple decades, but the push now is to make it bigger with the advent of semi-capable VR, in the hopes of making the most popular meta verse, so that everyone accepts that as the one to go to, and then it can be monetized heavily. I see more games and more celebrities pushing for it, than they are now, to try and lure everyone in. The reality for things like this, is that if you want to find out if a social trend is working/will work, then see what teenage/college age girls embrace (this is why TikTok is always going to be a thing). They are the ones who bring the young male audience, and are the key to spending excess money on unnecessary items (their parents’ money). #oldguyyellsatclouds
There's a gigantic market for gaming devices that has absolutely nothing to do with teenage/college girls that has been around forever. Oculus can tap further into that by just continuing to make improvements to the quality of games that they put out. The only thing that's going to make Oculus work as a "social trend" is when the technology is advanced enough that you can basically log into the metaverse by putting on some kind of Tony Stark glasses and not a VR Headset (something that is as easy as pulling your phone out to check all your apps and shit). That is a long long ways off, just going off of the improvements that took ~2 years between the Quest and Quest 2 headsets (very very minimal improvements all around). Until that technology is here, Oculus will be fine because the wireless setup + quality of games/experience apps they're putting out these days is going to keep the products selling.
Completely agree about the gaming market for VR (pumped to see what the PSVR2 will be like). My post was more in reference to the recent push for meta verses by multiple platforms. There are big pushes to see this to succeed, so that it can be monetized heavily. Virtual half-lives are nothing new, they are just new to the non-gaming market. I personally feel that meta verses and NFTs are still gimmicky in their current stage.
This will take over Asia first. But yeah I think we do reach Ready Player One level everywhere eventually
Yea the Meta Verse won't be a thing (outside of Asia which I agree with TC will definitely be the first to fully dive in) until the convenience is there. Plenty of people would rather pull their phone out and "converse" with people on apps on their phone while they do other shit like watching ____ streaming service. Nobody is going to replace looking at meme or thirst traps on their phone on IG or TikTok with putting on a VR headset. TBH if Zuck is the creepy weirdo I think he is, he'll come up with a way for girls to post meta verse exclusive thirst traps like a Meta-Onlyfans. I've watched movies and TV shows before on netflix/prime apps in the Quest which was really fucking cool actually, but it's not a convenient or comfortable enough headset to do so regularly. They've also got some random shit that coooould catch on eventually in the our generation or the one after like virtual church services and yoga classes and stuff. Almost have to look at the scenario currently as "what do introverts want to experience without leaving home" since you're not going to get social people to skip the socializing aspect of those types of activities. If the Metaverse doesn't project your actual physical appearance instead of a cartoon avatar, the stuff that gets monetized on most social platforms now just doesn't apply.
There are a ton of cringe ‘influencers’ and fake ads on social media that play into the perception of the metaverse and NFTs being gimmicky, just like most of the stuff posted on social media is cringe and fake. I can see why people say this with the 1000 alliteration animal NFT projects and the above hitting your TL or newsfeed. But you also aren’t wrong. 1% of NFTs will be JPEGs in 5 years and 99% of those JPEG projects will fail and have no use case (other than you can ‘provably’ show your ownership using the blockchain) The only real connection w/ NFTs and the metaverse currently are you’ll be able to take your avatar/player and all of your in-game add ons or purchases across multiple platforms and games. One giant integration.
web 2.0 = internet we use today web 3.0 = proposed internet of the future (or where the tech is headed) The user interaction shows how the metaverse and NFTs cross paths
So we just got one. I screwed up and thought Oculus linked to PS5 and it’s games. I’m sure it’ll be fun but wish I looked into it more ahead of time.
Ping pong is awesome its a trip when you realize you’re doing the ass out lean over the table that isn’t there. The mechanics are ridiculous though, my play is the exact same as real life.
Thrill of the Fight is super legit if you're looking for a workout. Game is fun, and will burn them calories.
I really want to try out F1 on SteamVR but I'm too lazy to figure out how to get the quest linked to my PC
