Now that the majority of the backstory has come out, just about all of those details that were on Reddit shortly after his arrest all appear to have been accurate even the name of the social media accounts the guy used to catfish guys was confirmed which leads to even more questions as to how these redditors knew all this..

I don't really understand the con on this catfish. He pretended to be a woman but then was like "oh yeah I'm a dude" when they met in person. Was that a successful strategy? Apparently!
I think it's possible he (VT linebacker) did believe it was a woman at the first encounter. He can't have thought she was a very attractive woman, and he must not have cared enough to check very closely, but if dude was dressed like a woman, dark hotel room, didn't get naked, etc...
you know how small college towns inevitably have those townies who are famous/infamous for one reason or another? like Crazy Dave the guy who yells outside the local radio station at 2 PM every Thursday, shit like that. except this dude had a penchant for young men, catfishing, and sexual harassment. Blacksburg is a very small town (moreso when school isn't in session), someone like Smith wouldn't go unnoticed.

I think he was really dumb about it. my understanding is he tied all his actual IRL info to the catfishing account, there was never any attempt to separate the two, I guess he figured horny college kids aren't likely to do any snooping around before they met. I recently read a story whereby someone meets Smith for work purposes and the guy puts Smith's phone number into his contact list. he later matched with "Angie" on Tinder and when he went to add her number to his phone it pulled up Smith's contact. like, that kind of base-level stupidity.
