Well this one is even crazier - given that there is a literal crocodile surplus pretty much everywhere (the animal obviously - so they're being killed a lot more than normal).

Those clasps must really be in short supply.

If you’re serious, I’m in. I live approximately 15 miles from Elgin, IL where Elgin Watch Co was back in the day. Currently the trademarks are with a Chinese company not producing watches.

I would love to resurrect it and back to the area. Would be a fun project to work on, as they had a diverse selection of watches.

I've been on the GMT list for 3 years now. First 2 were probably wasted bc I rolled up in my old Jeep and a pair of shorts and a t-shirt so they figured I couldn't afford it or just blew it off. Spent close to $30k for my wife over the last year at a different location of the same store, still waiting. At this point I'll be surprised if I ever get one for retail.

Are they just waiting for someone at the top of the list to come buy in the next few days? It does seem odd to have that much inventory.

Assuming you could sell what you’ve bought her for $15k, you’re still ahead if you can get one at retail eventually.

    $42k retail
    $73 high end of secondary

Nope they are solely for people to try on at the store. This is becoming more popular with Rolex. First time buyers want to be able to try a watch on before spending $5k to $20k.

Wait. Are you saying people are putting that amount of money down upfront without getting the watch that day? Like “yes that’ll be $9k for your sub and we’ll call you sometime in the next 2-3 years so you can pick it up”?

    Otherwise, not sure I follow.

  18. ScFan27

    ScFan27 Well-Known Member

No, the “exhibition” watches that are filling up cases in Rolex stores and Rolex dealers are only for people to try on and not for sale at all. The idea is, if I wanted to buy a watch a few months ago I would have to get on a waitlist and wait until it comes in to purchase and try it on. Now you can try the watch on and make sure you like it before you put yourself on the wait list. Essentially it is there to convert more would be buyers and have less people potentially drop out of buying the watch when said watch is available for purchase.

Some people have never tried on a Sub. Hell I hadn't until a couple months ago. It's nice to be able to try it on and see how it wears. I thought I wanted a Daytona, but after trying it on, it wears way too small for me. It's nice to try it on before getting on a list and committing to spending $10k when it comes in. Would suck to get on a list, wait 2 years, then be disappointed when it comes in.

The GMT I want is up to like $25k now. I could have just bought it but I don't regret upgrading my wife's ring. I'm probably going to break down and by the JC Deep Sea here pretty soon. Retail is $14k and secondary is "only" about $18k now so the resell doesn't sting near as bad as $25k for a $10k watch.

Got it. Either way, my assumption is that if the customer isn’t paying upfront, then he/she can always just decide not to buy the watch when the dealer calls and says the watch arrived. Seems like a silly exercise to keep watches like that in store when they’re having zero problems selling them and lists are long. Sure, someone might occasionally try one on and decide not to buy, in which case they call the next person on their 50+ person list.

lady at the PV underwood’s was trying to sell me hard on the deep sea when I went in there a couple months ago. I just wanted a datejust though but have some other big expenses coming up first so can’t get one any time soon. hope the wait list insane when I do wanna grab it and I regret not putting my name down

I agree with you, I’m sure Rolex likes the idea of these waitlists getting longer and longer like the most prominent beach clubs and country clubs around the US. It helps create the idea that Rolex is the luxury watch brand. But there’s no doubt if someone decided not to buy the watch it would take a maximum of 3 phone calls to find another buyer.

A lot of them now are nonworking movements in "display" mode (set at 10:10.) Though show watches are becoming more common since empty cases don't attract anyone.

Hopefully some of this is a supply issue that they can increase and some is a demand issue that drops.

It’s fucking absurd that people are waiting 2-3+ years to buy a Sub and can never get a GMT. Rolex is not AP/Patek, and their wait lists shouldn’t be similar for certain watches.

Yea thats the shop I go to. I thought about changing my request to a Deep Sea but I can't do that after 3 years of waiting on the GMT. Deep Sea wait would probably be shorter than the forever wait for the GMT though.

They have come through for me, even during the last few years:

    • Milgauss: 3-4 weeks
    • GMT "Batman": 3 days
    • Date-Just 36: 3 months
    • Daytona... on the clock about 5-6 months now

I have an extensive purchase history with them, have helped several staff members with home purchase / refinancing & have introduced multiple friends with a similar appetite for watches/jewelry... dblplay1212 being one of them.

    So there you’re taking:
    $11k retail
    $21k secondary

IDK man, just grab yourself one off the secondary :idk:

Yes, got to a few months ago. It's big, but I'm a big guy so it wasn't too big for me. A 42mm like the Explorer II is probably ideal for me to wear daily but the 44mm works too. If I ever get to buy a GMT, that'd probably be my daily wear.

Not so much the weight but the way the weight is distributed. It feels top heavy and I imagine the JC feels even more so.

For reference I rotate mostly between a Tudor Pelagos (which almost feels too light) and an Omega Planet Ocean 45.5.

I've read that the new bracelet they added in the last few years has helped with the weight distribution. Iirc the old one was smaller so it made it more top heavy. The new wider one came out in 2018.
