I really don't care about City's spending. Why? Because, even 200M later, they're still not a top-four team. They're an enormous collection of talented players, but not yet a cohesive team. It's sort of like watching France.

    Spend away!

Re: ITT: We discuss how City are ruining soccer...

I'm turning this into the mistakes City has made and what I would have done differently if I would have been owner.

    1. I would have hired some of the best scouts around.

    2. Build a youth system

    3. Not inflated the market so high with wages. Even though people didn't want to go to City they still paid way too much

    4. Not signed Barry, Kolo Toure, Adebayor, Balotelli, Lescott, Robinho, Jo, Miler. Either overrated or head cases.

Now all they got is overrated head cases and players that cannot be sold. A couple nice pieces like Yaya Toure, Silva, and Tevez to build around but not sure how much loyalty these players have to the club. My guess, not much. Yaya came because of Kolo and Kolo is only gonna get worse and worse as his athleticism declines. He is not a good defender, he is just super athletic.

I don't know that much about Kolarov to have an opinion. Boateng was not a bad signing.

The signings have been better this summer besides Milner but last couple years have been abysmal.

Re: ITT: We discuss how City are ruining soccer...

I do believe there has been a transition with Italian managers to the English game. Everything seems to go through the center more in Italy while wide games in England do the damage.

They like these technically sound players over speed.

Took Ancelloti a while and he nearly ruined last year for Chelsea starting players like Deco over Malouda.

Capello felt that players like Milner, Joe Cole, Barry, and playing Lampard and Gerrard together could succeed.

Mancini figured it out pretty fast going after players like Silva and Adam Johnson. If Milner is a replacement for Barry then it is a good signing, but if they play together it is just facepalm.

Not like these are the only ones. Wenger has done the same bs. He started Diaby, Denilson, and Song together at Wembley vs Chelsea when he had Arshavin who was playing out of his mind of the bench and Chelsea dominated again.

These wingers and great outside backs are what makes great teams IMO. They can open up so much for other players. Playing 3-4 center mids with no speed is stupid.

I do not believe Man City are ruining soccer. I believe they have put themselves in a situation where if they don't start winning soon it will become an ultimate disaster. The Sheik is stuck with this team. I'm not in love with the current crop of players but the main thing IMO is to stick with them. Can't add another half a dozen signings and get rid of half the starters every year or it's gonna be a disaster.

    1. The scout staff was overhauled before last season. See point 2 for example.
    2. Youth system is being built. You do not rebuild the youth system overnight. There is almost a whole new group of academy kids this year. They look very good so far. 5-2 over Arsenal this week. :smug:
    3. You continue to claim that people did not want to go City...do you have direct quotes from players that came to City?
    4. So you would not have signed 6 of 8 guys that Hughes signed? Cool. Also it is very likely by the end of the year that half of those guys are gone.

You have this loyalty kick....It is dead man. Let it go. Loyalty in professional sports does not exist anymore. It died once the big paychecks started coming in for winning championships. It is now all about who can pay me most, where can I win championships, and where do I get the best endorsement deals. Being an Ohio guy, you should know this. If loyalty mattered; Lebron would still be a Cav.

Also I am not going to turn down signing the best young player in the league. Milner is going to replace Barry within the year.

I said overrated or head case and LMAO at Milner being the best young player in the league. Just because he played the most and was voted it. Not sure who else could have been voted but I believe Song was eligible and he had a much better season.

There are at least a dozen young players I'd take over him. You people are also on crack that think Milner is a better overall player than Bale.

Does 1 5-2 win over Arsenal make a season. A lot of those youth players from Arsenal's last 2 seasons are now playing with the reserves or on loan. Can't even see who played for Arsenal in that game.

There is a ton of loyalty just not with teams with most their players being there because of money.

I said players only went to City because of money in the beginning. Now you might start getting players with all these names but they are still all paid double to triple what they are worth.

You got about 15 players that make more than Fabregas.

Milner plays something called defense and is not a one trick pony like Bale.

Song is an out and out defensive mid and he is very good at it.

Milner took penalties. That is like saying Lampard was so great with his 25 goals when over 15 were penalties.

So Milner played higher up than Song. 15 assists in 59 games is an ok return for a player like him. Nothing special.

That is like saying Garreth Barry plays defense. They may go back at times but they are not very good at it. Milner isn't bad, he is only worth around 10 mil though not 25.

Ok good result on the youth team. I read the report but no clue who played for Arsenal. All those players from those amazing Arsenal youth teams are all on the reserve, out on loan, or with the senior squad like Gibbs and Wilshere. They have a lot more young talent I know of but I didn't see who played.

So De Jong and Toure suck because they never score.

Song had must have had a ton of 2nd assists or passes that didn't count as assists because he has become a very good passer. One of the best defensive mids at holding possession. Not exactly Sergio but he is up there and is a good tackler and tough as well.

Re: ITT: We discuss how City are ruining soccer...

About Song, defensive center mids are always underrated. Real Madrid management thought Makelele was useless. Obi Mikel has been one of the three best players on the field in both Chelsea games this year (and was very good last year) and a lot of Chelsea fans think he is one of the worst three starters on the team. Milner is one of the most overrated players in the EPL, but he is still probably equal to Song.

This thread is dumb. People complain that the same teams win every year. And the only way to stop that is for a rich owner to spend a lot to get good players to match the elites. So people will complain either way. Once the new break even rule is in effect, it is going to be basically impossible for a mid table team to work its way into the elite. Investing in youth is probably the best way to become a power, but if you didn't spend like City did it would take a decade before seeing results. No owner wants to wait that long.

It's the result. Let's take off Tevez, Silva, and Toure tomorrow and see if you can beat them.

We played like crap. First game of the year and pulled out a decent result. Chamakh nearly scored on that play and Rosicky should have scored 10 minutes before if not for a ridiculous save.

I could say the same crap about you and Tottenham. We did not get dominated in our match when you looked like a youth side vs them except for Joe Hart.

Not really. Just in an arguing mood today I guess and feel the need to call out City and their nonsense.

My personal belief is that a club should only be able to spend what revenue they bring in and that is why I have no problem with Real spending absurd amounts of money although I disagree with how it's set up so all the TV rights and everything else go to 2 squads and it makes the other 18 fight bankruptcy. Makes you root for the underdog. Just watching that Mallorca game last year and how much a CL spot would have meant to them you had to feel for them.

You guys spend more than Real and don't have 1/4 the revenue. Nothing against you guys as all of you say you were fans of City before the takeover and have been through some rough times but I don't have an ounce of respect for someone that becomes a City fan now or became a fan of Chelsea after Roman took over which is over 1/2 their fanbase.

Have this dumbass Indian friend that bought a City jersey and listening to him talk about them and I just wanna punch him in the face every time he opens his mouth. Mis-pronounces half the names and has no clue which players play which position.

I hope the City fans that have been through the rough times get a title but for the new ones, they can go fuck themselves.

City aren't gonna be allowed to play in Europe if this rule comes into effect which I'm doubting. Platini is a bitch.

Thing though about Chelsea is they do break even now but that is after they've lost over 500 mil to build this team.

They do have a sustainable product now with a large fanbase. Man City spend more than them though and have to build a bigger fanbase similar to Man U to break even.

How Barcelona can't balance a 410 million euro budget is beyond me. They developed so much great talent but I really don't know what the hell they are doing losing 80 mil or whatever it was. That is absurd.

Re: ITT: We discuss how City are ruining soccer...

That already happens, just look at your team.

I disagree that it will play out the way you think. The teams that are elite right now have way more revenue so they will be able to spend way more than mid table teams, and it is very hard to improve if you can't spend. Roman pushed for the fair play rule to get passed because he was scared of another Man City.

Re: ITT: We discuss how City are ruining soccer...

Let's just say the MLB introduced the same rule (although I think 29/30 posted profits last year), the Yankees are still going to have by far the most talented team since their revenue stream is so much better than everyone other team. All the new rule does is make the elite teams continue spending like elite teams, mid table teams continue spending like mid table teams, etc. I just don't think a mid table team can become elite by spending with a mid table budget, but we'll see. To me, all this rule does is protect the elites

Chelsea lost £47 million last year before taxes, but I think like 20-25 of that was changing coaching staffs. And we cut 20 million in wages this year. So we are going to be really close to breaking even, and should in 2011-12.

Roman supports it because he is breaking even after he did the same thing 6-7 years ago.

The main team to get screwed will be City. I believe Liverpool's problems are because Hicks is making interest payments with the money they used to spend on transfers. Also Rafa's horrible eye for talent didn't help anything.

The break even rule would primarily affect City. They could keep spending the same way but won't be allowed to play in Europe.
