I liked it but didn’t love it. Grand Budapest is his best work IMO Enjoyed the kids storyline more than the adults. But Scar Jo and Schwartzman were fantastic.
I didn’t really get this movie. All the typical Wes film traits are here but the plot/structure was not to his normal level. Probably need to read some discourse on it which I stayed away from before seeing but have never needed to do for his past work.
Everything in color was great. I did not care for any of the b&w scenes. It gets too meta and I hate stuff the last few years that goes overly meta.
Quoting both of you, as I appreciate your opinions. To me, this was actually the least cutsie that Anderson has tried to get with things, and the most down to earth he’s ever been. Think it helped me that I was in the middle of reading The Hair of Harold Roux when I watched this, though, as I was already in a weird narrative frame of mind.
That’s probably fair and why I liked the color parts bc I’m not that big on Wes movies even though do I appreciate what he tries. So for me to even get to the “I really liked those moments” for his stuff means most fans probably loved it.
I love everything he does so I am a mark and of course was a huge fan, I think this is in the upper tier of what he has done. Just from an aesthetic viewpoint I think it is one of his most visually impressive films, the set design and colors just popped so well. Also, I think it is one of the funniest films he has written
Loved it, can’t think of a more visually appealing movie per my taste other than maybe Life Aquatic. Still the crazy plot line that we have all know that never once has you knowing what is going to happen next. To me this film tapped into relational dialogue between characters at a higher level than his other films. Maybe he is going through some shit. Maybe I’m going through some shit. Maybe we are all going through through some shit. Top echelon of his films for me which puts it into top echelon of all films for me.
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams But for sure, I think this is far and away the most mature thing he's put out to date that isn't entirely reliant on whimsy.
Finally saw it. Loved it. Instantly a top 3 of Wes' movies, below Grand Budapest and Moonrise Kingdom. Edward Norton was 100% channeling Matthew McConaughey's accent, albeit a bit more antebellum proper. Jeffery Wright has an incredible voice. I almost would have preferred Bryan Cranston and he switch roles. That said, Cranston's "Am I not in this..." by the ladies shower was hilarious. Steve Carrell made me laugh with literally every line. All the quirky kids were the best part, imo. Wes has such a knack directing kids and they work so naturally with his style of moviemaking.
Finally watched Henry Sugar. Instantly one of my favorites of WA. His style might be best suited for a 40 minute feature vs 1.5-2 hours. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen and the almost non stop dialogue kept me focused more than a movie has in a long time
Yes, they are perfect. Some AI group I'm in on FB I have requested shawshank, jurassic Park, up, and toy story
apparently Wes described this next film as a sort of “thriller” which makes me hopefully we finally get this
Finally ranked all Wes Anderson features: Tier 1: Rushmore, Grand Budapest, Tenenbaums Tier 2: Bottle Rocket, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom Tier 3: French Dispatch, Asteroid City Tier 4: Isle of Dogs Tier 5: Life Aquatic, Darjeeling Limited
