Forums or antique stores. I left my e-mail address with one place and they send me a note sometimes. They usually have a handful for me to look at and most of them are more trouble than they're worth. If the twist to open works well and there's no brass showing there's hope. I can do a few while watching a movie and make a few bucks (or more than just a few if it's a slim or fatboy).
Started last week and I must say that this is just awesome. I really look forward to shaving now. Thanks to everyone for all the advice. I do have a couple questions. I got the variety pack of blades and i'm not sure how to tell which one I like the best. I have tried them all and only notice slight differences. I didnt really like the feathers. Should I try more or just stick with the derbys and 7 oclocks? Besides that, everything is going great. I going to the AoS store next week and im looking to pick up some new shaving creams. Going to get a variety and see what I like best. Any suggestions on what to look for? Spoiler GF loved the shave. Got laid and she was talking about getting me something for v day.
figure out your technique first. odds are your first couple of shaves are going to be wildly inconsistent so you won't be able to discern any real difference in those blades. stick with the ones you like until you're able to get your blade angle etc down, then start trying different blades.
I did this my second time shaving and it was with the feather. I have been using the disposable for under my nose since.
Don't be afraid to move your nose out of the way. I pull my top lip tight over my teeth and push my nose up with a finger. This allows me to get to the top of the mustache area but I don't have to battle with the nose being an obstacle. That's how I've done it since I started and I've had zero cuts in that area. The chin, now that's a different story.
I think Mike's Natural has my unwavering commitment. 30 seconds of swirling and it's like yogurt on my face it's so creamy.
Is it just me or does the search function not work since the crash? I searched shave, wet shaving and shaving and it didn't find any of these.
got a shave with a straight razor for the first time today. There aren't any master barbers in my area except for a couple who exclusively do african american hair, but the place I get my hair cut now does shaves. It felt fine while it was happening but man what a terrible shave. I have a million spots of stubble on my face. If she hadn't rubbed her D's in my face during my shampoo as per normal I'd probably have left a smaller tip. On another note, I thought this was a strange thing to have on the Barrister and Mann site: Please Note: The Postal Service is apparently experiencing service delays due to budget and personnel cuts. Your package may take longer than usual to arrive. We apologize for any inconvenience. I haven't heard of any other company having this issue. Has anyone tried their Diamond Tallow Shaving Soap? The description is strangely intriguing: We blended notes of freshly cut grass, stadium soil, beer, leather, pine, cedar, popcorn, and caramel to conjure the unforgettable experience of attending a big league game during every shave
Probably smells really strongly of one of those things. If not it will smell awful. I like the smell of each individual meal, but the garbage can smells fucking awful.
Diamond is really growing on me. The first time I used it I kinda shrugged. The next few times I liked it. I'd suggest getting a sample and actually lathering it because it changes once you lather it. Very difficult to explain smell though (other than just generally earthy).
I just picked up a puck of Proraso shaving soap and a tube of their sandalwood cream for 13.98 shipped. Not bad. http://slickdeals.net/f/8323405-pro...free-shipping-30-off-amazon-12-rakuten-points
what are some favorite blades? I am finally getting through my pack of Gillette Blues i bought forever ago. I could go with something a little sharper. Was thinking of going with the Gillette Yellows but openminded
these. They were discontinued a few years ago but a bunch of us went in on a big batch a couple of years ago. I think I have a hundred which at my current pace will last me another 10 years or so.
Would be interested in trading anyone my Iridiums for feathers. I just can't get them to cut my beard like the Feathers do. I'll check how many I've got. 50-60 blades maybe.
It is time to re supply my shaving creams for Christmas. Last year I got Castle Forbes and really liked it. Does anyone have specific scents by them that you like? Any one tried something they love recently?
Went to Cancun back at the beginning of December, realized when I got home that I had forgotten my Simpson Duke in the hotel bathroom.
so my DE89L needs a replacement (threading on the head wore off, basically) thinking of Merkur or other all around good razor? Amazon has a LOT more options than the last time i bought anything...thats for sure
If it's me I don't go back with a pot metal razor like the EJ, Merkur etc. I'd aim for a stainless one that should truly last a lifetime. Plan B, if you're willing to invest a little time and elbow grease, is a vintage Gillette made of plated brass. Those have empirically been shown to last more than a lifetime.
Nice. So whats the stainless steel? Weber? Not looking to break bank by any means. I enjoyed the EJ performance, all around, if that helps. I also noticed the Weber website they just sell/produce the handles but not the head?
There's a lot of stainless makers out there but I don't know what breaking the bank is to you. I have found Gillette techs for $5 that shave plenty fine for anyone with decent technique. A lot of them were made pre WW2. The other end of that scale is the $200+ stainless models. All give different quality shaves, all are a risk to the pocket book if you don't like the quality of shave. For me, I have an open comb iKon razor that I've used almost exclusively for a couple of years but I probably have owned over 100 in my lifetime. I used to clean up Gillettes and send them to TMB members but I stopped. Every style of razor may not suit every person. I should start a razor rental company. Only I don't like dealing with people. *weber is noted for being the stainless head most similar to the sweet spot of razors right around the EJ89 Merkur 39. I've got several versions of it but just prefer the iKon more.
Was thinking of just $50ish give or take since I also need blades after just finishing my stock of Gillette Blues. Probably step up to the Yellows since both Gillettes I have tried before (blue and green) have agreed with me. Probably get a few feathers too.
Above the Tie and Wolfman Razors are high but customer service is A+. iKon is known for being an ass but he's been great to me. He's even posted some of my pics to his Facebook page. Above the Tie is a cool modular razor concept but they are pricey.
$50 will get you a stainless head OR handle. Probably not both. For that money I'd buy a Gillette, some flits, and a some scrubbing bubbles and clean up an old super speed personally. You can surely buy another pot metal razor but they are going to disintegrate the moment the high polish coating chips off. That may take 50 years. It my happen in 5 months. The feather asd2 is supposedly a fantastic razor. At $160 I've seen them got for a bit less used. The iKon "shave craft" razors are a bit more affordable than his high end line but still probably out of your budget.
I received a Muhle razor and brush for my birthday last month. It's amazing, and I'm never going back.
fair enough. I will look around. I may go with another pot metal in the short term though while also taking a flier on a cheap Gillette over at b&b
TYdeFan05 is there something to look for with the Gillettes? Is there a difference between gold/non gold? ie http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-194...954378?hash=item43e9c7310a:g:F6EAAOSwUuFWwLzB Just dont know if theres a known quality difference to look for when searching ebay?
