I have lived my entire life in Utica (suburbs and city), I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in Syracuse and Rochester.

Utica has been steadily on the rise and I would not say has a crime problem, although now looking up statistics I see it’s higher than average. I can only speak from experience and have not encountered issues despite living at some points in or adjacent to potentially high-crime areas.

Caveat with Utica, or to an extent Syracuse, is they are relatively small in the grand scheme of things with a large suburban population. To go across Utica in any which way takes 5-10 minutes and doesn’t have any form of traffic.

The suburban/rural population certainly has a conservative lean but as a reformed centrist I would say it’s a purple region. We also have strong refugee programs so I am hopeful things are progressing.

I can only truly speak for Utica but despite any red areas the general politics at the state level help cover up any potential conservative agendas.

Man. Y’all can talk shit about non-Seattle WA as much as you want. At the end of the day, I still get to enjoy Washington’s protections. And no, it doesn’t look like your state.

The Springs is chuddy but with the CoL being high in Denver more people are moving there so there is hope.

Anywhere on the Western Slope is basically rural Texas.

What part of CO? I lived out in the suburbs of Denver for about 2 years and my state representative was the first transperson to ever be elected to the state legislature, so yes even in the suburbs you get pretty progressive representation.

I love the weather here, yes you get snow which I don't love but a ton of sun and fall is awesome. Good luck with the move.

I am not sure you have ever been to a really, really red city if you think Spokane is that way. It is definitely purple, but the downtown and southside are very, very blue. Spokane Valley is hell on earth though. CDA is stunning but the natives are fucking awful. The rest of Eastern WA I can get that argument, but not sure you can lump all of Spokane with like Pasco or Moses Lake

Depends on your zip code. South and downtown is very blue, North is purple, Spokane Valley is Oklahoma

The city of Palm Springs is very liberal with a huge gay population, and has a trans woman as mayor, however outside of this, most of the other cities in the valley are controlled by rich old white people and mainly fight to have policies that only benefit rich white homeowners. Also, our Canadiens are almost all Albertans, so definitely not liberal, so outside of the actual city of Palm Springs, i'd say it trends more conservative as a whole (except for Indio/Coachella which are majority hispanic). Housing, while cheap by California standards, is not inexpensive. It's going to take at least a million at this point to get a decent home in a decent area and when we were looking for our next home, we were probably going to have to spend close to $2 million to find the place we wanted. Plus its hot as shit April to October and there's really nothing to do for younger people and families. Schools aren't great, options for pediatricians suck. It's a great place to live 4 months out of the year if you are a rich snowbird with no kids, but I would not recommend moving here if you're under 55. I've spent 29 of my 37 years here and we finally made the call and are moving in August and I can't wait.

I think it's a fair statement to make that Washington state is similar to many other blue areas of the country. The rural areas outside of major cities have the same viewpoints as red states. The catch-22 is that liberal havens such as Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco are pushing out their low-mid middle class. It's a cycle that isn't helping progressive policies move forward in this current political climate.

Ultimately being a human is fucking hard. Even before the SCOTUS decision my SO and I have had decisions about our next move and the move after that. I personally don't have the stomach to sit in Louisiana or many other red states for 40 or 50 years and wait for progressive policies to come my way. Realistically the legislative system and capitalism weren't built for sweeping progressive change in my favor.

I mean, yeah, of course the region that grows 75% of the nation's hops, 70% of the nation's apples, and 40% of the nation's pears has a bunch of dipshit farmers in it.

As far as Spokane goes, I imagine it's going to keep on picking up Seattle's castaways that can't afford to live there any longer, and the graduating college students are tending to stick around more.

Next 2-3 years we're trying to leave Seattle, but definitely not leave WA. Leader in the clubhouse is Bellingham, followed by a small spot outside of Leavenworth. A good portion of my friends up here are getting married/having kids and most everyone is thinking on an exit plan. Prices are pretty unsustainable, I can't imagine what it's like to live in SF or NYC.

Vancouver, BC would be the dream, but don't see that happening. When I win the lottery I'm buying a compound on Orcas Island and telling everyone to fuck off.

Californians and Portland/Seattle people on the more liberal side/remote workers tend to go to Spokane to resettle.

Those that want to be able to drop a hard r around neighbors end up in Coeur d"alene (especially northern CDA) or Spokane Valley, depending on financial situation. As a transplant to Spokane ~6 years ago, I have no allegiance to the area. I initially saw the remnants of why people that grew up in the other part of the state despised it growing up. It has changed immensely in the last 5 years though for the better. CDA is investing a lot of condo real estate downtown that is definitely attracting more liberals as well, but that is a battle for local government that will take a generation.

It's a phenomenal central place to live if you are willing to drive 4-6 hours to get the best the continent has for the outdoors. You can get to Vancouver, OR Coast, WA Coast, Banff, Glacier, Bozeman, and Bend in a half days drive.

Primarily. Housing prices, food and beer, everything is expensive as hell. I have a lot of friends in the service industry and/or non-traditional jobs and I honestly don't know how they afford it.

If I could live in Redmond or Issaquah (about 30-45 minutes East of Seattle), that'd be the dream, but prices are just as absurd.

I used to think the same about Leavenworth, but its way to faux and touristy for me. Bellingham is the only other place I'd consider moving to in WA as well. If we move, it'll probably be to Victoria or Portland if it ever can fix parts of it from looking like Ramadi

Part of what I love about this place is the mild climate, which doesn't really exist east of the Cascades. Too fucking hot over there, and it's only going to get worse.

But I hear your points echoes a lot, one of my best friends is from Spokane and he's trying to get back.

While I love the PNW, some of the small towns are charming (specifically along the coast) and don't give off a Mississippi Burning type of energy. I'm trying to avoid situations where I'm the only black person in the room.

Downtown Leavenworth with all the Bavarian shit is campy as hell -- not a fan. But the scenery more than makes up for it. It's stunning.

Would prefer like 20-30 minutes outside of Leavenworth in any direction. Prices are still reasonable in those areas.

All true I can definitely understand it. For a couple weeks a year, I am envious of Seattle's weather. Growing up in the midwest, I like my four seasons. I don't hate heat, but summers are easy here without humidity and mosquitos. If it's going to be cold, I'd rather it be snowing than a cold rain.

I tend to travel to warmer climates during the winter, so haven't noticed it too bad. But it's def an issue. Just have to keep reminding yourself that from mid June - mid Sept it's going to be one of the best climates in the entire world (other than the few 100 degree days).

Also, if you're into winter sports it can be a wonderland that time of year.

Wyoming and Montana are weird because they have major cities with liberal bents, are otherwise conservative states but not like cartoon villain conservative, but are more focused on the environment than your average red state because of the outdoor industry and public lands and waters.

Not sure what there is to hate about Bozeman. Some sub100k population liberal commune in the mountains doesn't exist. You have your technocratic NIMBYs from cities with their vacation homes and/or the locals with their trucks and anti-government rhetoric dripping from their hats and decals in every mountain town.
