So this is official? That's a shit hire.
Looking forward to Muschamp vs Dabo fights.
Fwiw Brent Pease was fired by Boise st...so he's available for a reunion tour
Don't think there was anyone left after rich rod pulled out
Barring any last minute snags, the 34th head football coach at South Carolina is Will Muschamp.
Muschamp emerged as the front-runner for the job early in the week but athletics director Ray Tanner continued to go through the interview process speaking with various candidates. Sports Illustrated has also reported that the deal is expected.
Muschamp, who spent last season as the defensive coordinator at Auburn, was the former head coach at Florida and the former head coach in-waiting at Texas. The 44-year old is regarded as one of college football’s brightest defensive minds and is a master recruiter and developer of talent.
Muschamp, who had a 28-21 record as the head coach of the Gators, including 11-2 in 2012, will replace Gamecocks interim head coach Shawn Elliott, who took over for the Gamecocks’ all-time coaching wins leader, future Hall of Famer Steve Spurrier. Spurrier resigned six games into the 2015 season with a 2-4 record. He finished his South Carolina career with an 86-49 overall record.
Muschamp played college football at Georgia and grew up in Gainesville, Fla., before attending high school in the Northwest corner of the Peach State. In coaching, he rose through the ranks first under Alabama head coach Nick Saban while Saban was at LSU, In 2003, the Tigers won the National Championship with Muschamp coordinating the defense. Muschamp followed Saban to the Miami Dolphins as assistant head coach for one year before heading to Auburn in 2006-07. Following a stint at Auburn, he took the defensive coordinator’s job at Texas under Mack Brown and he was eventually named head coach in-waiting.
After Urban Meyer departed Florida after the 2010 season, Muschamp was named the next coach of the Gators. He returned to Auburn after the 2014 season to coordinate the Tigers defense.
A press conference has not been announced, but it is expected to be held on Monday
I honestly think it was okay. He needs a really good OC hire though. He can recruit and coach Defense. The rest is out of his hands.
He rubs off on everything don't you worry.
Sources telling me that Spurrier told Muschamp he was retiring soon in 2013 so he tanked Florida to weaken competition and make himself available to SC
was the tweet about 4 million a year real? cuz that is more than we were paying him even after the extension I believe
He can recruit defensive players with the best of them, offensive players ehhh..
And just when he had Auburn's D moving from cringeworthy to awful.
Well, I always kind of pulled for south carolina when we weren't playing them because of Steve, now I hate em.
From the outside looking in, this is a terrible hire
It's pretty well known the Saban/Belichek coaching tree has little to no success in their first HC gig before building a dynasty in later stints so regarding his failure at Florida as anything but a positive for us seems foolish.
Oh, hey, look, South Carolina suck. This is news?
Sounds like a good fit for us.
Update on Muschamp to South Carolina. Source says there's an "agreement in principle" in place for Will to be next coach there.
Im probably wrong but i feel like he will do ok this time around. If he doesnt show he learned anything from the UF failure he should be blackballed from coaching forever.
Between Kirby in UGA, Saban still at bama, and Muschamp in USC, recruiting the state of Georgia will be an even bigger circus than it was before
Outside of a couple defensive recruits we lose to him this is going to be hilarious.
I'd like for Muschamp to do really well there, if for no other reason than to prove we have no clue what we're talking about when it comes to this stuff. I opened the "rank the coaching hires" thread and thought about it for a minute before I realized I have no clue how any of them turn out because I have no clue how any of the assistants do as HCs, and most of the proven guys have stuff about them that could lead to failure.
I don't think he will give him the OC position right away since he hasn't been a full time position coach yet, but it's a pretty sure guarantee he takes Auburn Offensive Analyst Bobby Bentley(former Byrnes HC) with him.
He is not going to be black balled. He just won't ever be a HC at power 5 school. The guy can recruit in the south and coach defense, he will be okay even if he sucks at USC.
I'm impressed that a rage inclined doofus has now managed to land two SEC hand coaching jobs.
Should be pretty easy to find a top flight OC this off-season. Not many teams are looking for one.
JC Shurburtt is dukebuckeye's uncle.
Well we didn't want him here anyways
What a terrible hire lmbo Dabo gonna make his ass quit
Once we missed on Herman and Smart, Tanner and Muschamp came to an agreement in fairly short order, but, since we've been criticized several times in the past by the black football coaches association, Tanner sort of goes through the motions of carrying out an expansive search that happens to include interviewing two black coaches, while Muschamp spends the week working on assembling a staff, and the lawyers hammer out the details. Obviously this is incredibly unlikely, but it would account for some of the strange circumstances surrounding this nightmare. Rich Rod expresses some interest, and Tanner is like "Sure, the more, the merrier. " Plus he figures Rich Rod might impress him, and it's not too late to back out on Muschamp if he does. Hell, Taggart might have even been in on it, counting on it earning him a raise. I mean, at the end of the day, it's only been like a week since we missed on Herman and Smart. So waste a week just fucking around, and maybe you can avoid basically being called racist in every paper in the country. I now want to take the time to emphasize that I don't believe any of this, it's just a conspiracy theory I've cobbled together for shits and giggles.
Good thing Ray Tanner has women's basketball really rolling

So Clemson won the ACC and a playoff spot on the same night South Carolina hires Will Muschamp? That rivalry flipped in a hurry.
There were a lot of similar conspiracy theories about Michigan's AD back in 2011, with Hoke in the role of Muschamp. I have no clue if they're accurate or not, but believing them gives you someone to hate if the hire goes badly.
Or you went after Rich Rod, were turned down for the 3rd time, so you then offered the job to AU's DC who you knew would take it bc it's a promotion for him.
Don't feel bad, Rich Rod turned Bama down back in 2007, too. It worked out well for us.
I mean it's basically a question of which coach would you rather completely fucking suck with.
Barry Odom sounds like a pretty good hire right now.
Haha souf cack
Is it possible South Carolina just didn't offer the kind of money everyone was expecting it to when the job opened? I find it hard to believe RichRod would turn down $4m a year (if he was offered the job) to go back to Arizona for much less money. Especially after he appeared to be telling a bunch of people during the season that he wanted any of the decent jobs on the east coast.
I know he has that weird bonus from Arizona if he stays a while longer, but I think he's only making around $2.5m a year right now. I can't see him turning that kind of money down if they offered it.
Ive been leading the charge on this from the start! Welcome aboard coach Boom!
Yeah, I'm sure I'll get called a homer, but I'm fairly skeptical of this whole story.
I'd rather have Kiffin
Don't worry. Muschamp was probably way worse than our third choice.
It's like nobody realizes that it doesn't matter who we hire. Urban Meyer, with Tom Herman as OC and Will Muschamp as DC, would top out at 11 wins at South Carolina.
No one will say that ever.
You should honestly talk to a professional
One bright side in all of this is that a lot more people have discovered that JC Shurburtt is a walking, talking, sentient, fishstick
Muschamp was pretty awful recruiting the state of GA when he was at UF
Wasn't really on anybody at AU either. Gonna be tough recruiting with Clemson in the playoff, UF rebounding and Kirby in GA.
