So technically HBO isn't telling his whole story, I hope that is a little motivation in book fans' favor that he may one day finish them... grasping at straws man
The show had already diverged so much before it even passed the books that they're basically two different canons at this point. The overall ending will likely be the same but the journey will be vastly different* *assume for the sake of this post that we exist in a universe where the books will be finished one day even though we clearly do not
We're two years past George's original deadline for TWOW http://grrm.livejournal.com/465247.html "My publishers and I have been cognizant of these concerns, of course. We discussed some of them last spring, as the fifth season of the HBO series was winding down, and came up with a plan. We all wanted book six of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE to come out before season six of the HBO show aired. Assuming the show would return in early April, that meant THE WINDS OF WINTER had to be published before the end of March, at the latest. For that to happen, my publishers told me, they would need the completed manuscript before the end of October. That seemed very do-able to me... in May. So there was the first deadline: Halloween"
I've said it before, and I will continue my stance he is afraid to publish more books in the series at this point. As its popularity grew, his length between books increased. Once the show premiered and it gained a worldwide mass following outside the books, progress has ground to a complete halt. He's scared there will be a negative response to how he ends the series. If he lives to finish it (he won't), then it will be after the series is complete. He can cherry pick the things which the public received well to include, while changing anything which had a generally negative reaction.
You’re right. It is far more likely he is going to pump out two more books (assuming that will finish his book series) within the next three years. His pace up to this point certainly leads credence he will catch up and surpass the television show. Safe bet on your part.
It's more likely that he hates writing this story at this point because of the various knots and they he's old, rich and famous so has better things to do.
I subscribe to this theory. He's always said he hated writing and only did it because he loves "having written." He's rich and old now; there's no drive to do something he never enjoyed doing in the first place. We'll get Winds of Winter but that'll be it till he's dead.
Me seeing the tweet: "This tweet is a troll isn't it? You're not fooling me mr *squints... TIME magazine."
I like how he’s just blantantly lying to us now. His post at the end of 2016 said he was only focusing on TWOW and nothing else and now he’s putting out FaB vol. 1. FaB vol. 2 will come out before TWOW, just watch.
honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he's just handing over old notes to someone, they make a book out of it and then he signs off. I doubt he's doing much writing. not that it makes it any better.
That basically happened in A World of Ice and Fire. He gave Linda and Elio the notes, they wrote the book, he edited it and submitted it to publishing
I don't know if I get more angry when this thread bumps or the EA NCAA football thread. (it's the NCAA thread. Cocktease every time)
He's ruined all joy I got out of ASOIAF. If it never comes out I won't even be that mad. This has taken so fucking long that the show has somewhat ruined my future enjoyment of the books.
I am fully able to separate the show from the books, but at this point I have such a negative attitude towards future books my interest level in actually seeing books 6 and 7(lol) is pretty reduced
I feel like the show is ending with with a wrap-up that is too pat, too simple, too conventional. The books, on the other hand, have gotten completely away from GRRM. They're convoluted and far too expansive to be "brought home" in just two more volumes. Even if A Dream of Spring ever sees the light of day, both endings would be disappointments, imo.
Show catching up to the books already.... WHy does George R.R. Martin write so slow?? GOT has been out since 1997!! That's like 20 years ago already >_<
