Your wife ageed to buy it today. I’ll drop it off at your house in December. Congrats on your new conversation piece.
Anybody opening anything of note for the holidays? I think I've sorted out my list and well be drinking a lot of Northern California wines. Fingers crossed nothing happens to it while flying home.
We opened a bottle of 2011 Roy Piper cabernet last night and was really underwhelmed. Had been looking forward to it and it was just unremarkable to me.
So far tonight, a bottle of staglin Chardonnay, 2 bottles of Lewis family cab, and a bottle of Hall's sacreshe cab. Not too bad. Harlan cab coming tomorrow night.
Jamet Côte Rotie last night at our house. Colene Clemons Margo & Chimney Rock (Stag’s Leap) Cab tonight.
‘12 Penner Ash Palmer Creek vineyard opened tonight. Just trying to sort through my 2012 Oregon Pinots since they are reaching max here soon.
2013. It was really good. A nice mix of floral, fruit and earth with good acid. I bought 3 bottles but this is the first I have opened.
13s took a little longer but have come into their own. I really like them and much like the 11s can now be found at discounts.
Biltmore Christmas white wine with the family. It was as underwhelming as you would imagine. But it was free so I’ll never complain.
Had some 2014 Vino Nobile from our recent visit to Salcheto (really cool off the grid winery) in Italy with beef tenderloin which was fantastic. Really want to get more into wine in the near future.
Brought a 2015 Penner Ash. Most of my inlaws are too distracted by the stupid wax on Belle Glos bittles.
I got a Kelvin wine monitor yesterday, that I just started fucking around with this morning. This thing is awesome. It has an app that will tell you when the wine is at the optimum drinking temperature for the specific bottle and also gives you instructions on aeration, glassware, pairings, etc. I'm just now scratching the surface on what it can do, but could not recommend it more. https://mykelvin.co.uk/products/k2
We are same. My mom pulled out some Biltmore red my sister bought her on a trip they took and it was also underwhelming, but drinkable. Basically alcoholic grape juice. My other sister who works in fine dining and I enjoyed some Locations España and Others granache from dept 66. Dave Phinney is a boss. Glad at least someone else in my family is a cunt with me.
I shipped myself a half case of some nice wines from Christmas and it was misdelivered yesterday. I went out driving around and found it at another apartment and it appears to have been left out overnight. It was down around 20 degrees all night; could this have ruined the wine?
Googling tells me it should be fine: the main concern would be it freezing and cracking the cork or bottle. All corks are intact and look fine, will check again as they warm back up inside
Yeah, the primary risk is the wine freezing and pushing the cork up through the top and exposing the wine to air. I had it happen once when Lot 54 shipped me wine over a weekend so it sat on a truck for multiple days in the middle of January. It was an old Barolo with a wax seal over the cork and the cork broke the wax seal and was about half inch out of the bottle by the time I got it. Fortunately they gave me a credit for it but the act of shipping wine to MN in January is incredibly stupid. You'll know if there is a problem by feeling the top of the bottle and checking if the corks are elevated. The wine is still fine to drink now but it won't age well.
As Rabid said, biggest risk is freezing. But any major temperature swing can negatively affect your wines, particularly ones that have age on them.
One of my best friends just bought a house and 9 acres close to Penner Ash and a bunch of the best Oregon wineries. He is getting into wine and even mentioned putting in some grapes on his property (said Not as jokingly as I would have thought). His property looks to drain well and faces south. Not in a valley, so if the soil is up to task I’m going to try and convince him to do so if I help throw money in. 5-6 years down the road I’ll let tmb know when you can have some of the ‘The white of Oz’ (Pinot Grigio or Riesling imo) and ‘The red brick road’ (Pinot noir obviously) are available.
Opened up this beauty last night and paired with a honey & cinnamon glazed roasted leg of lamb, roasted daikon, carrots and onions, arugula salad and some good French bread. Sheesh!
Had a 96 Dunn recently. Was in Napa last weekend. - Boich Family Cellars is a new must stop place. Great people, wine, and location. Source tremendous grapes too. - Also went to Sinegal Estate which was good, but not outstanding.
Working on planning a trip to Napa July 31st through August 5th. Any must dos? My dad has been in the wine industry for 30+ years so relying on his connections too.
On a cheaper wine note hack, for those of you that have Grocery Outlets nearby, you can get some ridiculous deals on some mid-level wine. I've been spending a lot of time finding deals there now that I'm more aware of how they get their wine. You won't find anything that scores above a 93 per say, but you can find plenty of 15-30 dollar bottles between $5-$12. Just got a couple Oregon Pinot's from winery's I'm familiar with that typically go for about 35 dollars for 7 there. Highly recommend it if you want to try and taste a bunch of different decent varieties for cheap. They also sell quite a bit of bad wine too, so use your phone to research before buying imvho
anyone do a bus/limo tour? Willamette valley specifically? tasked with planning one for 10-12, most the sites I googled are super generic so hoping for TMB'er approved ones
Signed up for Winestyr First shipment was a delightful mix of reds I def recommend this wine club: Www.winestyr.com
I will add Chappellet to the Pride recommendation above. There is something special about being in the mountains and looking down at the valley floor. It has beautiful views and my preference for wines (although I do love Rutherford and Stag's Leap District as well).
We did one through these guys www.backcountrywine.tours and it was well worth it. We got paired with another couple but a group that size you wouldn't have to worry about that. We recommended them to some of our friends coming up there this May too
I throughly enjoyed the Cade tour/tasting - just make sure to get a reservation. Views are incredible as it’s up in the mountain.

Anyone have recommendations for a wine cellar app? CellarTracker is free and seems pretty good. Does anyone use any of the other apps?
Got married last weekend and had these at our welcome happy hour, then a '98 mag of Jaboulet Hermitage and Pierre Peters Les Chetillons for the wedding.
Quick question - if the top of the cork is stained and the seal may be compromised, should I still open and try to consume? Or better to assume the wine is bad and contact winery before opening? I know some places are weird about wanting you to mail it back for replacement.
