The fuck are they mad about? Magic having too much sex? Magic is literally how I learned what sex is ("mom Magic has HIV what does that mean?") Kareem mad about... being too stoic, profound and principled? Jerry West is actually an interesting human now Wanna know how to make a terrible biopic? Listen to input from the actual characters and go make a piece of garbage like Bohemian Rhapsody. This show is great
Feel like these guys watched the (admittedly over the top) first episode and formed all their conclusions from that
Heard somebody say they’re watching the Magic doc right now, too, and that the show is eerily similar to the documentary.
Did the mvp thing really go down like that? edit: apparently, pretty much. Except it was CBS that did it and not Stern: "The final controversy in Winning Time episode 10 delivers another rather surprising true story. After winning the NBA Finals, it is said that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is going to be the MVP, but David Stern tells Magic Johnson that he could take the award instead since Kareem isn't there. This is a mostly accurate account of what happened in real life, although it was CBS who orchestrated the NBA Finals MVP switch in Winning Time's true story. Former sports columnist and author Bill Livingston admitted in Kareem's 1990 autobiography that CBS pressured voters to change their votes because they didn't want to present the trophy to an empty seat due to Kareem not being at the game. Livingston confirmed that enough people changed their votes so that Magic Johnson won the Finals MVP based on a 4-3 count over Kareem. While Magic delivered a dominant performance in the Lakers' championship-clinching game, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar dominated the prior five games and is largely viewed as the person who should've won the 1980 NBA Finals MVP."
After Stern orchestrated the 2006 Finals so he could elevate Dwyane Wade into stardom for the #Miami Heat nothing surprises me
I was wondering how accurate the MVP thing was. They are definitely setting up the beef between Magic and Kareem but it was more about Magic getting a new contract and paid more than him.
i'm through five episodes and this is way more fun than i thought it would be given some of the lukewarm reviews i had read i'm not a laker fan so i guess i don't know much of the story (beyond magic/bird, kaj being a disinterested figure, etc.) and i'm enjoying it a lot
the doctor who consults with buss on his mom's cancer "we're in the endgame now" "inevitable" sort of a weird nod to the mcu right?
Am I overreacting? I watch a lot of tv shows. I'm on epsidoe 4 and this is one of the best shows I've seen. Super entertaining, the subject matter itself is entertaining, and very well done. Really well casted.
Michael Shannon is awesome but that was kind of a weird original choice for Buss, Reilly is perfect for the role. Shannon would’ve been great as West, but Clarke is crushing that. Then that led to Will Ferrell being all butthurt to Adam McKay for casting Reilly.
Everyone. Pat Riley, Dr. Buss, etc. Norm Nixon is played by his son so that wasnt a surprise, but it's amazing casting
Maybe we can get a spin off Paul Westhead episode when he coached the 90/91 Nuggets. Really any of the Loyola Marymount seasons would be great as well but averaging 120 points and giving up 131 per game in the NBA is insane.
Incredible performances all around on this show. I did meet Jerry West in 94 when my dad told me to go get his autograph. He was super nice.
Amazing episode. And amazing how it played out in real life. https://reddit.com/r/WinningTime/s/WuB7wvAcoo
