They rejected a bid of "just under £20 million" from Marseille, the numbers thrown around this summer from bigger clubs were like three times as much if I remember correctly.

Congrats to him on the achievement. Marseille only sold him because they needed money. Since he got to West Ham his value has skyrocketed and he's never been more recognizable or marketable. They get a lot of credit for that imo.

It's no knock on you but that's how you get all your players that aren't vetted through the academy. Same thing for me as an Arsenal fan, bigger club.

I agree with Husk as well, sucks for the team. I guess there is really no way around it though.

that's irrelevant to my opinion that if a player can force his way out of a dead end club, then by all means, go for it. you only have so many years in your prime, so why waste it at a club where your ceiling is qualifying for the Europa League?

meaning West Ham didn't revive anything. Value skyrocketing has as much if not more to do with the current market.

LOL explain to us how signing for West Ham was anyone's fault but his? Again not a personal attack on you or your position, just that he knew the dead end he was committing to. West Ham isn't exactly post Fergie United. Same managers, same shit tactics in Europe, same spend they've had for years.

Do you not think he is a cunt at all or do you blame his agent? Or you just don't care it's his right is what you are saying?

Maybe Payet feels misled about not getting to play in an awesome new stadium and would rather play in the fancy new Velodrome instead of London's Stadio Olimpico.

it's his right to throw a hissy fit and demand to be let out of a contract he signed last year with 4 years remaining on it (or whatever the details are)? that's not how life works.

yes it is. when he has the leverage, more power to him to make a move that he thinks will benefit his career. like a club wouldn't try and get out of his contract or sell him if he was playing poorly

Sadly that's how it works in sports. All an athlete has to do is not try in games and they'll get what they want.

noted. but don't act like football clubs always honor a contract. teams can also rescind and/or void contracts because they have the leverage in that situation.

Also his clubs right to hold him to his contract and park him on the bench for a few months. Force the move during the summer, when he can move to a team he knows has qualified for CL if that is his wish.

It's a fucking travesty what is happening to Salzburg fans. They dominate the Austrian League with ease so naturally their fans relish getting to play in the European competitions. Even if they win their league again, they will more than likely be barred from playing in Europe because of the rule that limits the owners that have more than one team to just one European slot.

I wonder if RB will spin off Salzburg and sign a large, long term sponsorship instead

Yep same as New York Red Bulls. NYCFC has big time bragging rights over NYRB for being second in their organziations pecking order with NYRB being third in theirs. Man City were also smart enough to put theirs all on separate continents.

Yeah that's what he was saying with only one being able to play in Europe. If they sold RB Salzburg but agreed to a name/sponsorship arrangement with a new owner then both could play in Europe. This is the first year they will both qualify so it hasn't been an issue until now.

I'm more interested just from the potential impact on the title race. Would be crazy if the Premier League's top scorer on the 1st place team left in the January window.

Red Bull ditching their Austrian roots and putting more focus in Germany draws a rather unseemly comparison that the folks in marketing probably want to avoid.

Bielsa revitalized his career at Marseille but he definitely gained much more fame playing in the prem. He never wanted to leave but they had to sell him so they wouldn't be deducted points in the league. Plus I believe he played under Rudi Garcia at Lille as well so not surprised he wants to go back. Shitty situation for West Ham but hope Marseille can get him back.
