Yeah the timing is hard to get down but it's a one shot kill. At least for me. I'm just a level 3 G right now. I haven't run into any high level bandits yet if they exist. If you stop or slow down the horse will buck you bc his fear level maxes out
If you have all the parts, just have to find a weaponsmith to have it crafted. Only stuff you can do without an npc at this point is alchemy/bombs.
If you are in the second area, bandits are like level 6-10 in any given camp. I didn't have any problems in the first area. I am gonna try to do what you are suggesting though.
Certain blacksmiths can only craft certain things up to their level of skill you just have to find the right one. The quartermaster where you get the Griffin contract can craft most weapons.

Is there any effective way to restore vitality/health? I look for inn keeps/merchants for food but on my way there I run into bandits or at the last inn keep I had to fight people and couldn't even purchase anything.
If you arent on hard meditate for an hour i think. I have a potion called swallow that regens health. Besides that all i know is collecting everything and try not to take damage. Quen is my go to for preserving health. You probably know this but fluids like beer and water regen health too.
Swallow potion is a huge deal. Need to go to a alchemy dude and create it ASAP. Heals about 30-50% health in 30 seconds.
Used the previously mentioned Sun and Stars and for some reason I never used the Swallow potion I only used the Thunderbolt one, that was a dumb decision.
Because one of the leader cards disables your leader ability either it is NIlf or squirrel can't remember which.
Holy shit.....Jenny O the Woods might have been the hardest beast yet (I'm playing the third tier...bloods and bones or whatever). I was a level above what I should have been and she was ridiculous. I think it took me 6 tries. As mad as I was, this is why the game is so great. I did all of the shit in the beastiary, lost a couple times, then perfected the tactics against her and dominated. It's a beast that does around half damage per hit on my skill level so its really tough.....but once you understand everything, its not tough at all. Basically, I love this game. My only issue is the shitty Baron's quest....holy fuck I don't want to get your fucking goat so I can know where you sister is so I can know where the Baron's dick is so I can know what STD he got. Goddamnit such a fetch, fetch, and fetch again quest. Bitching a lot for one quest. Overall, the game is amazing. Mad Max level of amazingness.
So after atleast 35hrs of gameplay, just found out what adrenaline is for. Also, supposedly your starting game gear can be upgraded drasticly? Too bad I sold that shit before i got out of the first area.
Also if its the starting Foltest leader card, you need the fog card in your deck to play the leader card, it pulls the fog card from your deck, you won't be able to use the leader ability if its in your hand.
Rolling with the Witcher Cat armor right now with the Light armor perk. Really only use Igni and Yrden, need to get on this Quen train. Also my game crashed twice while playing the gwent guy in the courtyard of Vizima, didn't happen to yall? And he rewards you with the Foltest siege card? I want that
I completed the Gwent players in Velen quest that makes me sad my Northern Realms combined strength is at 122.
There is still the high stakes game and players in novigrad. I got a Phillipa whatever she's a hero card from the barkeep at the Seven cats I think. Was pleasantly surprised about that
I'm thinking about picking this up when I get home. I've never played any of them but I was a huge skyrim nerd. Will i be able to figure it out?
It'll take some time. I never played any of the previous games in the series either, but like you, I loved Skyrim. This game is far more involved and intricate. May seem a bit overwhelming at first, but you''ll adjust. I'm still getting the hang of it myself. I prefer Skyrim because it's more simplistic, but this game is far more graphic and has some of its own unique features.
I love gwent and have been playing a ton but the monsters deck is overpowered. Impossible to beat when they can just summon 100 guys even with biting frost.
