The story in the OP was early on 9/13. He left the house later that day. The parents actually said 9/14 but they changed to 9/13 a month later. He basically bounced as soon as it went public.

So Petito and Laundrie witnessed the 2 girls near Moab get murdered. The following day they’re seen arguing and fighting at a restaurant in town due to the fear and shock of what they witnessed. The perp tracks them down and murders Petito, Laundrie escapes back to Florida. He’s then followed and murdered by the original killer. I think I got the timeline right.
