My daughter just made the Varsity track team as a distance runner. As a former football player, I drive anything over 100 feet on principle alone. Will she need spiked shoes or no spikes? And she loves Nike, so trying to go with that brand. She hasn't cracked a 6 minute mile yet so not buying $200 shoes. Any suggestions?

    or get a waffle

    or get a Saucony

tell her to start her intervals right away in spikes if you do go that route

They just posted the list of who made the team yesterday. The coach hasnt given her a distance yet, but will be whatever is. Closest to the mile. Is that 1500m?

My daughter does the 800, 1500, and 3000 and we got her saucony last year and she liked them. Go get fitted at a running store and tell them what she is running. Congratulations to your daughter!

This is getting me amped up for track season! Remember that there are going to be some crazy talented runners and as long as your daughter is improving and halfway enjoying the hurt from races it is a success. Track people are so much nicer than other sports from my experiences.

Her current goal is to get to a 6 minute mile. Best time thus far is 6:31, but shes only been running for 4 weeks. Literally did nothing else athletic before that other than trying out for cheer and volleyball, that she didn't make.

Good for her and good for you for asking!

She'll only get faster and you'll hopefully have the pleasure of seeing large chunks of time shaved off as she gains more experience.

I mean people are winning national and world championship level 1500s in Nike Zoom Victory spikes. To count out the two biggest R&D in the market because you want to try and sound like a running hipster is stupid.

Also, at that level a shoe isn’t making the .001 difference it takes to win elite level races. Good shoe tech and elite shoe tech are so close for 99.9% of people.

Get her what’s comfortable and she likes the looks of.

You are looking for racing flats (I guess with or without spikes), not just normal running shoes.

I remember mine being 5 ounces, these are 8 (weight matters).

My point was more that the non Nike/Adidas companies make very very good running shoes.

    But ok

Just get her some racing flats; you don’t need spikes for the mile until you’re a D1/Olympic level athlete.

T&F is an awesome sport btw, much less drama from the kids and parents.

Not really hipster. Nike and adidas haven't been reputable in running or track for years and years and years. Maybe they're getting there. But it's not wrong or hipster. They were hot garbage as little as 5-10 years ago.

Nike is to track is like Nike was to golf. They pay people to wear their shit and make stuff that's fine but the staple brands are generally way more reputable to people who actually do the sport.

The golf and track departments aren’t remotely similar. Nike golf was a marketing creation completely driven by the success of Tiger. Nike track is a core component of the brand that’s existed since the inception. Knight literally started the company selling rebranded runners out of his trunk at track meets.

Nike’s reputation in the track world overall is as a solid but generally overpriced option (good if you buy at discount though) for mass-market models, with their top-line models being the gold standard. Durability isn’t great but their weights are typically best in class. Not as dominant in the sub-marathon distance world as they are in sprints.

It’s fine to recommend alternatives, but c’mon dude, give credit where it’s due.

Daughter made T&F at her middle school, I believe they didn't cut anyone though. We were asking the same questions. They recommended that we get a comfortable basic running shoe to begin with.

She's fast but not blazing fast. She has always been the fastest on the teams she's played on though, soccer and softball. I have to remind her from time to time to not run like a girl, she'll occasionally run without moving her arms when she's being lazy. The laziness is also her problem. She's not committed to training every day.

if it makes you feel any better laziness is also the reason I’m not running every day, that and my ankles apparently rolling at the drop of a hat as I get older

This. Get her fit for the right shoe. You can spend $200 on something that has the newest technology but fits like shit and she’ll hate it. Make sure she’s measured in a Braddock and they accommodate to width. I’d say 95% of people buying shoes don’t get fit into the correct last.

Same here. She trys to get me to run with her like I used to but I just can't do it.

She's more into doing different things day to day. She's just not committed enough to the discipline needed to getting better.
