How big will your shop be, and what is the thickest material you plan on working with? There is a world of difference in between portable saws and shop saws, and plenty of solid options for both.
Out of curiosity why do you want a table saw? Think this got discussed a couple pages back but a bandsaw does a lot of the same things safer than a table saw. The cuts probably won’t be as clean and you can’t cut dados and tenons but you can resaw and cut curves. table saw was my first big tool but I think I prefer the bandsaw for most tasks now
Not huge, especially at first. I’ll have a spot that is about 18’x20’, but half will also be used as a gym. I’m assuming the majority will be 2”, but maybe up to 4”? Don’t think I’ll be doing much thicker than that.
Probably because I’m just more familiar with them? Ripping and dados are the main uses I’m thinking of.
You can check specs on individual units, but 4" is pushing it for a 10" saw, and would likely kill any portable/jobsite unit. Getting a shop/cabinet style saw with a quality fence seems like the play. Infeed/outfield tables can double as work surfaces as well for efficiencies sake. Jet, Powermatic, Grizzly, and perhaps Delta are brands to consider. While i haven't priced one recently, I'd guess you'd be spending min $2k for a new one. I'd add that while some will run on 110/120, you're better off to hardwire for 220 for a tool of that size and capacity.
Well damn. $2k is definitely not in the hobby budget anytime soon . May just stick to gluing 2”x4” if I want to go thick.
Get a good portable saw at home depot and you'll be happy And lol at anyone suggesting a bandsaw to replace a table saw
I personally would spend the extra ~$200 and get a contractors/hybrid saw over a job site saw unless you need the saw to be portable which it doesn't sound like you do if you're working out of a shop. It usually has a better fence and cast iron top.
But kinda... It's not really a shop. It's about the size of a 2 car garage but it is going to serve as my gym (biggest priority), pseudo-home office (desk in a corner) and shop. So I do like the idea of being able to move the saw out of the way when not in use. And since I haven't done any major projects, I also like the idea of starting with a portable saw to make sure I'm going to stick with this before shelling out larger coin.
A lot of those contractor saws are on casters but you can't really "put it away" like you could a jobsite saw. It would really depend on what your situation calls for. Jobsite saws can definitely get the job done if that's what you want
It's more of just a desk where I'll plug in my laptop when I'm home. So the laptop won't ever be present when I'm cutting. But it's also another reason why I favor a portable saw, just in case.
You’d be surprised. Our saw PCs in our manufacturing plants last a long time and those things are full of shit when they get replaced.
Some fucking A golden ideas in here. Router mount on the infeed side, laptop on the outfeed. Beer fridge under. All kidding aside, it sounds like a portable would be okay for you. I like the Ridgid 10" which are about $500 with the folding/rolling stand (damn nice). For the same price, maybe less is the DeWalt 10" table top saw. We use the DeWalt for trim/flooring jobs on upper floors of homes/etc. Would do 9/10 of what you want. Ripping 4" material puts you into a whole different class of equipment, honestly. I'd like to have a big bandsaw about once a year. Besides that, it'd be taking up space.
Just finished up this table for my deck. Not completely satisfied with the angle cuts on the surface, but there’s only so much you can do with a cheap miter saw.
Lived in Atlanta for a few years. Drank a LOT of Sweetwater, Monday Night, etc. There’s some old school Sweetwater and Wild Heaven caps near the center that I’m pretty proud of.
Nice work dude. Being handcuffed by your tools and/or materials is annoying. If you ever want some ideas on workarounds, post up. What is under the tabletop surface on this one?
Finished a couple bar tops for my basement a month ago. First time working with wood in over 7 years. Enjoyed it.
A sawmill in Bellevue, guy has a ton of pieces at a reasonable prices. One piece was 110x31x3 the other was 90x22x 3. $430 for both. Clear natural stain , and clear poly.
Working on a wine cooler/liquor cabinet. What you see will be painted an off white color with walnut sliding barn doors and white oak top.
Fairly new to this but rebuilding my deck and my old saw horses finally actually crumbled. Is there a "best" sawhorse at this point or all they all pretty much the same?
I have folding metal with 2x4 tops that are convenient for quick stuff, but not as stable. My primary sawhorses are 2x6 top with plywood frames, very similar to what they have at Lowe’s. A lot of times I’ll screw down a 4’ square of 3/4” plywood on these to make a worktop since my garage doesn’t have a permanent workbench. Looking at the Kreg workstation. Anyone have this?
What are some good resources for getting a slab of wood for a desk?? I'd like to get some kind of live edge slab that's about 4'x20". Then put some legs on it that I get elsewhere.
Most decent sized towns have a specialty hardwood store (or theres likely one within an hour drive). You can buy online from places like this, though then you get to deal with shipping and not getting an in person look at the piece of wood. https://www.thelumbershack.com/pages/live-edge-wood
Yeah, I'm in Atlanta and seems I can only find super high end specialty places..which really isn't want I want. I'll check the link. Thanks
I use to go here but it’s been a long time. Never looked into their slabs https://www.peachstatelumber.com/
Look for a contractor hardwood supplier and call or email. I’ve found they keep slabs on hand sometimes for things like islands.
Just saw that Menards has 11% off* all Bosch power tools right now if you’re looking for some decent power tools. Especially routers. Job site saw looks nice as well for what it is. *11% is actually a mail in rebate for store credit. Also, they have periods where your entire purchase qualifies, but not sure if that’s on right now.
