My two least favorite common/normal foods are shrimp and coconut. So coconut shrimp is my personal hell. I’ve had some unidentified food in China that I’d prefer never to eat again. One that sticks in my mind is a pizza with shrimp and corn on it.
Manischewitz straight from the jar. I enjoy eating proper gefilte fish (and pickled herring) whenever I’m at a NY-style Jewish deli. But the memory of absolute disgust from my youth still persists.
Probably pigs feet, but I think that was as much a mental thing as the actual taste. As far as common stuff, pickles. Can't stand em.
I spent a summer in college working with refugee families in Clarkston Ga. I was visiting a Nepali guy that had recently arrived in the country. It was pretty much a given anytime we visited a refugee in their apartment, they would feed us. They were always very insistent and it was considered rude to object. This guy asked me if I was hungry, to which I told him I wasn’t. But as I said, they pretty much never took a no. He disappeared into the kitchen and suddenly reappeared and walked right out the door. None of this is type of behavior is unusual. The families would often store food outside their apartments. What is unusual is what happened next. He was gone for about 5 minutes at which time he burst through the door and in both hand was a large live frog. He rushed into the kitchen, and grabbed a bowl, a knife, meat tenderizer, and a variety of oils and spices. He made short work of those frogs and quickly had some frog balls prepped and ready. Fried them up in a pan and served them with some rice. By far the grossest thing I’ve ever eaten. I also had some of the best things I’ve ever eaten that summer too. Homemade Momo is to die for.
Raw beef tongue at a 1* Michelin restaurant located in the interior courtyard of a castle in Italy. Rest of the meal was fantastic (and also Rolling Stones themed), but not this course.
What?! Idk about worst, but liverwurst sticks out in my mind, as my mom had told me that my grandpa loved it. Tried it and just couldn’t do it.
childhood memories: bad cheesecake, bottom of it was horrible, almost vomit inducing, surprised I still like cheesecake boiled unseasoned brussels sprouts crappy overcooked hamburger and the bun got wet from milk but I still had to eat it. the wet bread part. gross adulthood: I like everything
I’m a very adventurous eater and like a lot of the stuff discussed ITT. But, I was on a DC/NYC Chinatown to Chinatown bus and some guy ate what appeared to be a century egg and the aroma made me dry heave.
Tangentially related (I haven’t tried it because something about it just seems morally wrong) but this reminded me of balut.
I think pigs ears might be number one for me too. Tried some in Madrid once and they were just so bad. Also had some type of whale in Iceland that was pretty bad. Had a puffin appetizer with that meal and while not exactly good, I wouldn’t consider those cute, little birds bad.
These fucking disgusting things that old ladies would bring to church potlucks during lent growing up
Slimy ass raw okra. I love okra fried or pickled but raw is fucking nasty. Like eating a big ole loogie.
