Just landed from vacation and see we got worked by PSU today. That sucks but it's awesome to see the attendance number at over 14k, that exceeds the GIA capacity by about 500
No dudley will decide the dual. Don't see Haught or Walz losing, but of those two, bigger chance of Haught.

Oracle Jr took 4th in HWT at State as a sophomore! Really excited for him! Here is one of his matches in the consolation bracket.
Just a guess that St.John and Zadick go with him. Robie probably stays and gets the HC gig. I'm not sure who else would take it. John Hughes at Lehigh? Santoro is the HC and I don't see him leaving. If I was VT I'd go after McCoy at UMD. Good coach, great wrestler, shitty program. Dressler has laid the recruiting base and I think McCoy could take the ball and run with it.
Totally agree with you, he's been there forever, east coast guy I believe. However McCoy isn't going to get where he wants to be at UMD getting the leftover scraps and VT has established themselves as a major player top 10 team. It would be interested in seeing the staff Robie puts together. Any thoughts?
Lots of look at the pay from the media guys. Sounds like VT was top 10 ish in pay and will continue that commitment. So should have the opportunity for a good hire.
Now that he is coming back home to Iowa, Kevin Dresser is getting a serious raise. Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard negotiated a long-term deal to bring the four time ACC coach of the year to Ames. According to a press release from the Cyclones, Pollard and Dresser agreed to a seven-year deal worth a total of $2.25 million in guaranteed salary plus incentives. His base salary for next year is $300,000. Dresser's base salary for the 2017-18 season will double what he earned during 2015-16, a year in which he won the first team trophy in the history of Virginia Tech's wrestling program by placing fourth at the NCAA championships.
Pat Downey kicked off the ISU wrestling team... Looks like a huge headcase but maybe the only guy that could give Dean/Nickal a go at 184, too bad we'll never find out how good he is.
It's a non revenue sport In the 90's the only team that made a profit was Iowa. I would assume more do now. Iowa PSU Okie state Maybe OSU You can thank title IX
I understand that, I just think it is ridiculous that someone who is in the top 10 in the world in their chosen profession makes $150k.
Think we've had some huge donations recently to pay for the new facility but imagine ticket revenue barely pays Ryan's salary. I like that the NCAAs are for the title that matters but need to find a way to make the duals a bigger deal, the flo debacle sums up a lot of what's wrong with wrestling right now. The stream for our match vs Cornell was a joke too, the stream went dead for all the big matches.
Again, if you think Flo is the problem or the enemy of the wrestling community, your anger is sorely misguided. I suggest you listen to FRL from today if you still believe that. Yes, Flo fucked up big time last weekend, but that was a tech error--NBC had the broadcast rights to the World Cup, one of the biggest international wrestling events of the year, and the story was heightened by the fact that it was in Iran during a period characterized with tumult between the two countries. Yet they chose not to air it. Flo needs to be better, but 99% of the time, I am able to watch live wrestling on their platform without issue, and that is wrestling that would otherwise go uncovered. In terms of wrestling pay--no one is getting rich off wrestling outside of JB (and Snyder made 300k from his two golds if you count that getting rich). If you're involved in wrestling professionally it's because you love the sport and/or it's all you've ever known. Cael's contract is up after this year, I imagine he can't be too sad about Dresser signing that huge deal, because that becomes the bare minimum for him. I can't be certain but I believe Dresser's deal makes him the highest paid NCAA coach.
I don't think flo is the problem at all. I think that the biggest dual of the year being on flo and not television is the problem.
I wanted to be a professor at clarion in the mid 90's and coach wrestling - that was my goal but it didnt happen. That being said I never thought I'd make more than 60,000 a year - nature of the game. The NCAA dual title needs to be packaged in with espn's coverage of ncaa's. It's going to get real next year with PSU being loaded and it being in Cleveland. No more catering to Iowa, Okie State, etc it will be on neutral ground.
NBC had the rights to the World Cup in Iran but chose not to broadcast it. The problem is that only wrestling fans want to watch wrestling. Flo is a site for wrestling fans. I'd rather stream live wrestling with the occasional fuck up than not see it at all.
TIL that GGCD is a major investor in Flo. In cael's radio show today he said (paraphrasing) No question that would've been great TV. Should've been on ESPN. Big ten needs to work on that. Tough deal. Flo had the rights. They have investors, But needs to be on live TV
I've never said a bad thing about flo I'm under no misconception that wrestling is big but if espn can pump out college softball for 2 months then failing to see reasons why there can't be bigger publicity for the main events in wrestling.
That being said I believe Cael can command his number this time and I'm not sure we can pay it. Especially if he goes 6/7.
Watching the semis and finals on ESPN is absolutely amazing, the ESPNU coverage for the other matches is great as well, but outside the semis and finals, I find myself streaming the matches because they only show one or two at once and there's a good chance matches you want to see aren't aired on ESPNU. TV coverage is ideal, I'd love that, but it just isn't a reality right now. NBC owns the rights to all these huge international tournaments--they own the broadcast rights to the Cadet, Junior, and Senior world championships this year. Will they even make it on air though? The World Cup didn't. Helen Maroulis wrestled Saori Yoshida--the most accomplished wrestler OF ALL TIME--for an olympic gold medal, became the first American woman to ever win a gold medal in wrestling, and NBC didn't even air it live. So yes, I'd prefer wrestling to be on TV on a major network, but NBC aren't wrestling fans. They are money fans.
Yeah I don't see him going anywhere but what does Gino make at Uconn? Honestly I don't know??? Those numbers...
Obv everyone involved in the dual should be angry that it didn't reach the audience it was intended to reach. And it should be on ESPN, he's right--but if they wanted to acquire the rights, I'm sure they could have outbid Flo. They didn't.
And Mourlam was a train wreck. Brands was very good . I say that as someone who wrestled for both. (Though, I didn't wrestle for Brands long at all before hanging it up -- to no fault of his) Really pissed about Dresser leaving. Dude made his name as a coach in VA (Grundy and Christiansburg), and he'd have NEVER been given a chance to be a college coach if not for VT. Really salty about this one, really salty. If Dresser does leave, I hope they go for Schwabby (aka Doug Schwab). He's got strong VT ties, and VT is a step up from Northern Iowa.
In the end, they are pretty similar. Freestyle(all attacks welcome) and Greco-Roman(upper body holds only) are the Olympic disciplines of wrestling. Our American 'folkstyle' derives mostly from Freestyle. Biggest differences are on the mat, there's no riding and controlling from top. After a takedown, you have about 10-15 seconds to score(exposure points, don't have to hold an opponent's back to the mat, just expose it for 2 points) otherwise they go back to their feet. It's called the par terre position and you have more options to score(locking hands around the body with no arm is illegal in folkstyle but the most commonly used attack from top in par terre, the gut wrench) On the feet, points can now be scored via 'pushout', one point for driving your opponent off the mat. It's 2 points for a takedown now(didn't use to be), but the big differences are in how you can defend. Lots of points scored(especially by the Russians) in counter exposure, less wild scrambles since exposing your own back in an attack can/does cost you points. It's a little more deliberate that way.
Thanks its pretty confusing to me, as I have just figured out what my son's wrestling points are. They are going to start doing some freestyle stuff now and I feel like I am back to square one on understanding whats going on.
It will take some time, they change scoring rules almost every other year it seems. Lots of scramble sequences will lead to scoring that's hard to understand, even for seasoned fans.
So exposure points are kind of like a 2 pt near fall? I guess if a kid goes down, he can just belly out and wait for a reset? My son is a heavyweight, so it seems as some of that could be good and bad.
