Nato would be a decent freestyler but probably not a world team type member. He was built for folk. Your technique must be on point in freestyle. So the technical wrestlers with some great endurance and a couple of elite takedown moves tend to be the best at it. So, take Nolf and Hall for example. Nolf has an endless gas tank but he's a more funky wrestler than Hall. Nolf is a good freestyler, not great. Hall is very technical, nearly always in position, can counter with the best of them and is developing a few elite moves. Hence, why he's a better freestyler.
I think Nate is a 3x Fargo champ, and he's wrestled at Bill Farrell and I believe the US Open in the past. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't try to make a world team this off-season, the 57kg spot is really wide open. Ramos and Nahshon might be the favorites. I do believe his future is in MMA though. I can see him as a future champ. Also in MMA news, Aaron Pico is making his MMA debut for Bellator on June 24th at MSG--that's a couple weeks after WTT, so he won't be wrestling.
Haven't seen it mentioned here yet, but former Cadet World Champ Jared Verkleeren received his release from Iowa State and Michael Beard decommitted from Northwestern. Verkleeren is #13 in 2017, Beard is #5 in 2018. Verkleeren is rumored to be headed to Minnesota with Allar (and Steveson in 2018), while Beard is considering Northwestern, Cornell, and....PSU. Also rumored that McCutcheon will graduate and will not wrestle for PSU next year, which is a little surprising considering he'd be 3rd or 4th at 197 preseason. More PSU news: Cortez is bumping up to 141, could signal Suriano to 133.
Beard is a lock to PSU if PSU wants him. He's been wanting to come to PSU for a long time but PSU offered him no $$, he'd have to come as a walk-on. Beard's brother is on the PSU swim team and his parents are pretty well off financially, so he just might come to PSU for little or no money. Cortez is moving to 141 where he will get hammered by Nick Lee if Cael wants to pull his redshirt. Lee destroys Cortez in the room. Suriano isn't moving up, he's probably a lifer at 125 ala Nico. McCuthcheon may or may not move on, he wants more $$$. He knows his spot is not secure if Cassar is healthy. The juicy rumor is Arajua.
All of this. GGCD is just another OSU fan, like Stevis_In_C-Bus, talking about PSU without knowing what he's talking about.
Arujau? Don't see it, he'd have to get a release from Cornell, and he's tight with the Diakomihalis family. Cornell is going to be really good in 4 years, Yianni is an AA threat in 2017.
Maybe Iowa if he's leaving. Sounds like he wants to wrestle in the B1G. He just followed Happel, Brands, and Morningstar on twitter.
RBY hasn't been coming to PSU for a long time. RBY is probably Iowa or Minny. I'd love to see him at Minny. He and Steveson would be a great 1-2 punch and would help them get back up off the mat. It was only a matter of time until Teasdale flipped. He just let Lee talk him into doing something he didn't really want to do and oh, probably pissed Iowa didn't set up his old man with a job as well (I kid). Teasdale is a better fit at PSU, bottom line.
I'd like folkstyle more if they switched to 3 point takedowns and added further penalties for going out of bounds like the point in freestyle. The new stalling rule is a good start, but I want something more punitive.
I also disagree with a bunch of his predictions. I've got Coy, o'Connor, murin, stefanik. Most interesting is Labriola-Romero. Kaleb has not faced anyone even close to Labriolas skill level. That kid is awesome. Flo has Labriola #1 at 170 and Romero #3, intermat has Romero #1 and Labriola #2. Could be the first of many matches between these guys. Really looking forward to it.
You're so odd. It's not like the 3 pt takedown hasn't been considered before, they tested it at NWCAs in 2015. In no world should an escape be worth just as much as a reversal. And don't you love matches that go 2-0 in TDs, the guy with the tds gets a late stall call to send the match to OT, and then he loses in rideouts despite never being taken down? Fun. The OB stall rule is new last year. Clearly they recognize that there is a problem that needs a solution. I don't think this rule is it.
I'm not really against that, though I like the mat wrestling just as much. What I was trying to say last night is that I like folkstyle better, because it allows wrestlers to take more chances (aka be funky), and do pretty cool moves while their back is exposed. There are no funk rolls and/or flips in Freestyle (well at least not like in folkstyle) which makes it's viewing a bit more dry imo.
I'm a total traditionalist with the sport. 1. Hate random draw - love the fact that Cael does too. 2. Not fond of the 4 point back but it benefits PSU in most cases. 3. PSU doesn't see too many 2-0 OT SV stall matches. If we do it's against somebody super good. No need to change the sport, if coaches like Tom Ryan and Brands would spend more time coaching then practicing waving a red flag they would agree as well.
And not everything is about freestyle, Greco, & Kyle Snyder. But then again since you're going to miss my point totally, the sport is kinda being owned by PSU right now and it looks like that will continue.
I will agree, I'm getting tired of osu posters GGCD and Stevis_In_C-Bus talking about the most dominant program in college wrestling right now.
Watching this lovers' quarrel makes me uncomfortable. Hopefully stevis and GGCD have a peaceful resolution.
Some wrestling stuff: Both of the above are depth guys This has to make Tom one of the most well paid coaches in D1.
That's a lot of money for a wrestling coach. I don't think Cael makes that much and PSU is damn near revenue neutral now in wrestling. I do know that Cael is constantly fighting for raises for his assistants and they are paid quite well for assistants...more than most head coaches. That is why none of them have an interest to be a head coach. There are only a few schools that would give them a raise over what they are making now.
Nick Roberts, University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown wrestling champ, died of a fentanyl overdose, the coroner in Pennsylvania's Cambria County ruled Wednesday. Coroner Jeff Lees ruled the death accidental. Roberts, 23, was found dead in his apartment on UPJ's campus on Feb. 25. Lees said he couldn't determine every pain medication Roberts had been prescribed in the past year without speaking to every one of his doctors first, the Daily American reported Wednesday. However, Lees did say Roberts was not being prescribed fentanyl by a doctor at the time of his death. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid analgesic that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent, according to the National Institutes of Health . It is a schedule II prescription drug, and it is typically used to treat patients with severe pain or to manage pain after surgery. It is also sometimes used to treat patients with chronic pain who are physically tolerant to other opioids. In its prescription form, fentanyl is known by such names as Actiq®, Duragesic®, and Sublimaze®. Roberts won the 133-pound title at the 2016 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in his first season wrestling at Pitt-Johnstown, having transferred there after starting his collegiate mat career at Ohio State. A knee injury in November 2016 ended Roberts' wrestling career. Prior to college, Roberts graduated from North Star High School in 2012, where he was a three-time PIAA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association) Class AA state champion. He also was a four-time District 5 champion and three-time Southwest Regional champion. Roberts finished his high school career with a record of 146-10. He holds the school record for most falls. Roberts also had an impressive prep career beyond his home state of Pennsylvania. He was a two-time Junior World Team member who placed fifth in the world. In addition, Roberts was a four-time Fargo National Champion and a 2010 Asics First-Team All-American.
Sad. RIP Nick Roberts was once a slight sophomore, defending state champ and #1 in the nation at his weight, when he was beaten in the finals by a scrawny twig freshman who refused to lose that night...Zain Retherford.
Article today in the Harrisburg newspaper that Cael's salary was 175k, not including bonuses, performance bonuses, etc. He's getting ready to sign his extension as well. Beard getting ready to pull the trigger as well. Cael was at Malvern yesterday...only a matter of time. Cassar is also back and looking great. Not wrestling freestyle at all this spring/summer to concentrate on folk. If he's healthy, McCuthcheon is pretty much done.
Just saw that there is a kid named Victor Voinovich from Ohio wrestling at FloNats and he's one of the top 8th graders in the country. Anyone know if there's any relation to the former Ohio Governor/Senator? Speaking of FloNats....just starting now, looking forward to some of these matchups, but Jaden Mattox-Edmond Ruth in the 152 quarters is juicy.
Anyone have any info on Mason Parris? He looked like a blue chipper last night, but announcers were saying he's a pretty good football player as well--apparently he has offers in FB from Ball State and Cincy.
St. John, Zadick, and Metcalf are all following Dresser to ISU. A) That's a hell of a staff B) That's an all Hawkeye staff C) My body is ready for ISU-Iowa rivalry
Shit hoped Zadick would stay. VT hired Frank Molinaro from PSU. http://www.hokiesports.com/wrestling/recaps/20170403aaa.html
Yikes. Good hire for VT, but don't know if that's the best fit for Frank. Frayer I think is a good hire as well. Well done by Robie to move quickly to replace them.
It was time for Frank to move on from the NLWC. As it was mentioned to me, there was a potential Dennis/Ramos scenario that might not have been best for all parties. It's not hard to conceive that the student will likely pass the teacher in a couple of years, if he hasn't already.
