fucking Childers naming his album after a song about fixing up an old camper is great. love the dude.
Already listened to the Childers album 5 or 6 times today. It just flows so well, and so enjoyable. If I had to name my top 5 albums so far this year, I'd probably go with 1)Childers 2)Ian Noe 3)Charles Wesley Godwin 4)Joshua Ray Walker 5)Ben Jarrell HM) Gabe lee
First listen didn’t get me hype enough.. subsequent listens have this album on rotation. Absolutely adore Timmy Ty
We might have gotten the two best albums of the year on the same day. The mike and the moonpies is damn good
I’m only one spin through, so I reserve the right to amend this, but the new Childers is high floor, low ceiling. It’s consistent in sound and feel. Doesn’t have any bad songs. But also doesn’t have a song that individually stands out, either.
Country squire Purgatory Imo. Less sturgill in the new one. Very good from top to bottom. Wish it was longer
Doubt it happens but I'd love to hear updated versions of Charleston Girl, Shake the Frost and Follow you to Virgie.
At the Americana awards, when Childers stepped up in a Colonel Sanders-style suit to accept the emerging artist award, he voiced his frustration with the genre. “Americana ain’t no part of nothin’,” he said. “It is a distraction from the issues that we are facing on a bigger level as country music singers.” Defined by Merriam-Webster as “a genre of American music having roots in early folk and country music”, Americana, Childers says, started as “a place to recognise people being ignored by their own genres, but now it’s a hindrance. The stuff we used to call ‘good country’ is now getting called Americana. We’ve not fixed the problem of bad country.” Country, Childers says, became vague and commercial. “The problem with country is we’ve turned the props into the play,” he says of the commercialisation of the songs. “Let’s not just Solo cup and pickup truck it to death. Let’s handle this in a smart way. Nobody is thinking about lyrical content, or how we’re moving people, or what’s going on in the background of their minds.” https://www.theguardian.com/music/2...c-nobody-is-thinking-about-how-to-move-people
It's about goddamn time. There's really no wrong answer but I think this is my favorite Knight song. Not one of his deeper songs but always gets me:
Childers new one is just okay. Like mentioned above. High floor low ceiling. Highlight was hearing about the Chillicothe paper mill, thats one town over from me and stinks like shit.
He commented on Twitter about a new song so I figure it's coming. No announcement still so it's probably a ways out
First 4 songs especially. The music is great but he’s such a talented songwriter and that’s what I’m there for
just found out about Ian noe. His album was great. Childers is number one for me right now. New album is great. Which I don’t say lightly because I never think artists second albums are as good as the first one I find out about and start liking them. For instance, no Turnpike album was ever as good as the first one to me. also Apple Music started doing a weekly Southern America playlist. It’s a good listen and it’s how I found Noe. Called Southern Craft.
my only complaint about the Childers album is a lot of the songs sound pretty similar in terms of tempo and composition. Purgatory had some rowdy songs like White House Road and Purgatory and some slower jams like Tattoos. its a minor deal though, because this album flows together really well. there's some fantastic songwriting on this record.
Haven't listened to it a bunch, but I'm agreeing with you on the less rowdiness and being okay with it. Then again I've probably already made up my mind that Sturgill's new album is already my #1 for the year and maybe his best yet.
I really like how when the music starts in on “bus route” it sounds like a less heavy version of “whitehouse road”. I’m always pleasantly surprised when Tyler starts singing
I can’t quite bring myself to rate it above Purgatory, but it’s really fucking close and really blew away my expectations
yea, ditto. I well prepared myself to be letdown and TCC banged it outta the camper park. Would like to rewind and go back to 2017 Grey Eagle show and do this all over again. Probably would have hit few more shows along the way than I did. Did manage to pop my 40 Watt cherry with TCC & the Food Stamps
I need to listen to more sturgill I suppose but I don’t think he’s as good as Tyler. I’m also really new to this genre of music so I have got a lot of work to do
Some moron threw a half full bud light on the stage at the band after they finished the set. Thought Barker was gonna come out in the crowd. Also thought they'd pack it in with no encore. Came back out. Burned it down. Posted something on instagram about 40 Watt being a special place to him to finally get to play. etc. Insta got lost during the time period that he was hacked, it appears.
Anyone wanna put together some essential listening for someone who’s just recently dove into the genre? I’ll start off by saying I really like Tyler, Wall and Isbell and do not like those Moonpie fellas
Listen to Sturgill's first three albums in order. High Top Mountain Metamodern Sounds in Country Music A Sailors Guide to Earth
They've kind of melded into the same thing I guess at this point, but I'll ask anyway: Are you looking for more pure country or more Americana/Alt-Country?
Sturgill is really really good but I just have more of an ear for Childers personally. Childers and Isbell are my two on repeat.
I really fucking love Tyler. As much as I’ve loved any music in my life. Idk what that means but that’s as good as I can give. Tyler gives me the same feeling I get when I listen to a real good hip hop album for almost the same reasons
Sturgill got me most interested so I can only echo Daddy Rabbit. Other than that, pretty much if you have Spotify their "radio" function will keep you occupied for quite a while. It's where I am at. Scored some tickets to see Childers in Philly in December at a small venue. Fucking pumped.
Gotcha. If you like Tyler, Colter Wall, Isbell, etc, I'd send you down this road: Turnpike Troubadours, Hayes Carll, Brent Cobb, John Moreland, Chris Knight, Ryan Bingham (Mescalito), Margo Price, Ray Wylie Hubbard, etc. Maybe even something like Whiskeytown.
