honestly the way to go new and fresh now is to go backwards Engaging plot with good world building, deep RPG mechanics with difficult and grounded combat. The Morrowind/Oblivion formula with new tech and good voice acting will work KCD2 is basically doing that
Yeah studios focus on bigger and bigger open worlds instead of more interesting NPC's, side quests, and immersive environments. Nobody cares about your map size if your rpg elements are getting worse and worse and exploration is boring. Larian and Warhorse have it figured out, along with a few others.
I just recently tried getting into KCD 1 again and I just found the game to be obtuse. Couldn’t get into it at all.
not every game is for everybody unfortunately, but I loved KCD1 despite it being a bit janky. KCD2 is fantastic and has side quests on par with The Witcher 3. it takes certain type of gamer to click with some of the game systems though, truly I think it’s worth the early game frustrations
I created a society on PGA 2K25 if anyone is interested. Copying and pasting a post from the video game board I made. I’m on PS5 but it’s crossplay. I created a society titled “The-Mainboard” and made it private. I have no idea how this is supposed to work. Feel like there should be a way that I can give everyone a password or something but I’m not seeing it. Juggsian research says you need to search for it and I accept your request. I can add admins to make it easier as well.
Anyone’s remote play not working? This week it’s only worked when I’m at home, and probably about 25% of the time even when I’m home.
I love the Avowed vs Oblivion/Skyrim discourse. Rose-colored glasses for the older games and a super critical eye for the new game. Rinse repeat. People love to forget about buggy Bethesda games. Avowed works...basically perfectly...which is crazy for today. Graphics are beautiful. Loading is virtually non-existent which is also super impressive. Character building is super flexible (be anyone, do anything after a simple re-roll). Oblivion/Skyrim you are effectively locked in. They are just different games trying to accomplish different things. Avowed vs those two games is like comparing COD (I hate myself for using this game) to Insurgency/Hell Let Loose. Both are shooters. One is a little more "realistic" and the other is more fun/flexible.
You can have parties of up to 4 people but the lobby has 33 people in them (or 22 or 11 depending on the world). It's basically Diablo combined with Hades but it definitely has more Hades. Been playing with Mr. Gin Buckets already
Gamepass is on a heater right now... Atomfall (on my play later) South to Midnight (enjoying tf out of it) Blue Prince (crazy good puzzle, rouge lite game)
Blue Prince was great. Finally beat it on like day 26. Not sure if I'll go back for the other puzzles. I don't do the puzzles, I google, lol
Playing it now (pc). Only barely into it but the combat is fun, the art design is great, and the voice acting is very good. You can tell it's just an AA game, as opposed to a AAA game, but it's great to see a mid tier production get such love. Lately, everything has either been a hit or miss expensive product or a cheap indie game that might be worth the 10 bucks you spend on it.
I don't know how long it's been since I've forgotten to sleep because of a story focused game....before last night. it's really fucking good.
Agreed on Expedition 33. I'm enjoying mixing and matching abilities to see what chains best together. I'll probably finish it this weekend. Playing on game pass but will end up buying it on PS5 just to support them more. Incredible debut game for this studio.
Add in a couple chocobo, a random crystal, and some tonberrys and you've got one heck of a Final Fantasy.
Hey guys. So I fucked up and bought a months Xbox live ultimate code but it was non-stackable (I have the normal game pass and can’t add on to it apparently) they won’t refund me so fuck it Anybody need a code that doesn’t have either? That’s the only way it will work apparently. Tag me if you want it
Really sick of all the turn based combat games coming out. I always try them, because I always want to like them, but I've never once played one I didn't want to uninstall and/or throw in the trash after about an hour of playing them. Was going to try Obscur Expedition until I learned that it was turn based combat. Well at least that clears my schedule for Oblivion.
I actually miss turn based Final Famtasy. I don’t like the new hack and slash model they use. Clair Obscur is really freaking good. But, I get it if it’s not your style. Oblivion is also really good, obviously.
It's fantastic. The battles are so fun and also not so frequent that you never get sick of them. I don't really grind, but if I rest and reset the enemies in an area, I don't go out of my way to avoid them, because leveling up is rewarding and, again, it's so much fun to battle. I replayed Final Fantasy 15 and 16 earlier this year and those games are so boring and redundant in the battle mechanics. There are a ton of turn based RPG games released over the past deade or so, but almost all of them are 2D/HD2D with sprites. It's great to have a legit 3D game with great production values that embraces the strategy/balancing of a turn based RPG.
I can't imagine I'd like it after hating every single turn based game I've ever played. That includes multiple Civs, multiple Final Fantasies, and Bauldur's Gate 3 among others. I wish I liked them, but I never do. I fall for the trap every time a new "amazing (turn based combat) game" comes out. Many of these were games of the year, but still, it just doesn't do it for me. I honestly wish more people were like me, so less of this shit got made, because some potentially great games are ruined with the use of this mechanic. On top of that, I also wish games like this would never get game of the year, because those awards will just mean there will be more turn based combat and less live action combat in the future. I realllllllly wanted to like Bauldur's Gate 3. I gave it hours and hours, hoping the combat would grow on me. Nope. It didn't. I hated every minute spent in combat, and unfortunately I found myself in combat all the time. Running into a random bad guy in the woods could turn into a fucking 20 minute waste of my time. On the flip side, you have Diablo or Skyrim where you still get those random, pointless battles in the woods, but without the massive waste of time, annoyance, and eye rolling.
What is it you hate so much about turn based RPGs? Is it just the way everything stops for you to make your selection and waiting for the enemy to make its move, etc? Its roots go back to D&D and the table top games where everyone took their "turn" to do their move, so it's pretty deeply embedded in the genre. It'll never go away for good, but games like FF7 remake/rebirth have modernized it to be more action based while still allowing you to switch characters and input commands, etc. Have you tried either of those?
Yep. It feels like a hassle more than fun, and the more and more hassles the less and less fun I'm having. It's funny, because I also love board games, so I realize that it probably doesn't make sense.
I’ve never been able to get into turn-based games, either. It always feels like the skill component is just taken out of the gameplay.
As far as looter shooters go, it's pretty awesome. Put in a good 8hrs over the last few days. It played great solo, randoms, and with friends. Very excited for this to come out.
Beat Clair Obscur last night. Definitely left a lot undone so I'll be diving into new game+ soon. That ending. Wow Spoiler The tragedy of the ending is that no matter who you choose you end up feeling crummy. Choose Maella and you side with the Paintress. Choose Verso and you side with Renoir. Both are built up as the major antagonists, and in the end, you have to decide which is the lesser of two evils. Brilliant mix of storytelling and player choice
Can't wait for ARC Raiders. Are there rumors about a release date? It looks like it'll be really soon...?
