depends, what’s the remedy in your scenario for failing to Mirandize but not doing anything until you actually start asking questions? the procedures were invented to prevent abusive police practices to gain forfeitures of rights. If you arrest someone without probable cause or a warrant, you lose all the evidence you obtained as a result of that arrest. If you gain an admission of someone in custody without Miranda, you lose that admission and anything you got from it. If you arrest someone and don’t get them to a judge in the required time, you lose the case. I don’t think any of those rightfully steep consequences are appropriate for a scenario in which none of the rights of the accused have been violated.
She was arrested a couple days ago. The yearbooks were printed weeks/months ago. Its unfortunate but can't blame them for that.
My bad, thought it was recent. I assume they were already printed. School should have eaten the cost to re-print them.
hs yearbooks are put together by students and somebody like a driver's ed teacher not exactly talking about the NY Times here
She’s a sexual predator. There’s no difference in what she did than the grooming that sexual predators do to their victims. I don’t know what the max sentence is but hope she gets it.
LINCOLN CITY, Ore. (KATU) — A Lincoln County judge sentenced a former employee at Taft High School to 1.5 years in prison Tuesday for raping a student, the district attorney’s office said. Angela Schafer, 53, worked as a heath services advocate at the high school where the abuse occurred. She had been employed there since 2022. In September 2024, police began investigating allegations Schafer had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a student earlier that year. A grand jury indicted her in November 2024. On Tuesday, Schafer pleaded guilty to third-degree rape of a child under the age of 16 and to furnishing alcohol to a minor. “You never know who is capable of doing this; it can be anybody,” Judge Sheryl Bachart said before sentencing Schafer. “Some people are put in positions with greater access to children and you used your position, the access you had to this child, and his vulnerability to sexually abuse him -- the aggravating factors are significant.” Schafer will serve her prison sentence immediately. She will also be required to register as a sex offender, complete a drug and alcohol treatment program and pay an $8,500 fine.
Oh my god the worst is that woman in the Reddit vid above yelling the questions at the husband and wife walking in. It's like having 100 prime Nancy Grace's all in a row going after this woman. Just so over the top. I gotta delete that app
U should be able to control yourself. I was an out reach counselor at UCLA at about that age and while technically not hired by the schools. I worked there and was able to not be a perv.
I dont think a 22 yr old being attracted to an 18 yr old automatically makes them a perv. Its a 4 year gap. Its just an unneeded risk. Young teachers should teach young kids imo. 22 yr olds are adults but still dumb as shit. Think about what we were all doing at 22. Dumb shit.
I think it’s morally wrong to be an adult hitting on high school students especially if you’re working at their high school. If you’re 22 and you meet an 18 year old in a class in college it’s different. But, I’m specifically referring to being an adult on a high school campus. We probably won’t agree so we don’t really have to discuss it any further.
Ehh 22 and 18 is 22 and 18, doesnt matter the setting. Yes its being a bad employee but I dont think it makes someone a perv or a predator.
why do you keep on bringing up “22 and 18”? The story I replied to was a 22 yo sending nude pictures to a 14 year old. Your hypothetical has nothing to do with the situation. You purposefully made the high school student an “adult” to justify the inappropriate behavior.
The initial comment was about a 22 year old teaching at a high school, not about the 22/14 year old. A lot of kids graduate at 18. Having 22 year olds teach in high school just isn't a good idea imo.
the initial comment was IanBoyd replying to pearl who posted a story about a 22 yo sending nude pictures to a 14 year old. I replied to Ian’s post about that story. Do you have pearl on ignore? If so that is the confusion.
No, i dont have him on ignore. Ian's comment didnt reference specific ages, just that its a bad idea to have 22 year olds teaching high school.
In terms of it being right and wrong, it matters. In terms of it making someone a perv or predator, no. A 40 year shouldn't be hooking up with their subordinate 40 year old but they aren't a perv or predator for doing so. I referenced that in the sentence after the one you chose to bold. You can't say its ok for a 22 yr old to hook up with an 18 yr old in college but they are a perv for doing it in a different setting.
What the fuck are you talking about? JFC he literally quoted Pearl’s post that referenced a 22 year old sending nudes to a 14 year old. Why do you think he mentioned “a 22 year old”? He didn’t pull that age out of thin air. He was discussing the story. I was continuing the conversation Pearl started with the mugshot and story he posted. So the post that started this conversation wasn’t IanBoyd , it was pearl
A good friend of mine got his degree in something or another wanting to become a high school football coach. Went to do his semester of student teaching at a high school and very quickly realized there is no way he could do that as a 21/22 year old male. He said some of those girls were basically throwing themselves at him. He went and became a personal trainer at an old folks home instead
