First time on the internet? My wife says she would snorkel in septic tanks before teaching middle school.
I've taught middle school and high school for +20 years. Also certified as a building level/district level admin. No big shock, but most of you are talking out of your asses.
This is idiotic. It is like telling a doctor "I know you trained as a brain surgeon, but we are going to have you start at the feet and work up."
I think that's overplaying it a bit (my student teaching was in middle school and high school), but there were definitely a lot of senior girls trying to play ball and I'm not even attractive. Weird dynamic, parents always taught us to think big picture, so it was never an issue. But...yeah. Also, I will never understand people who like teaching middle school. Just the worst time of everyone's lives. Have to be a psycho to enjoy that.
I can tell you that every one of my middle school teachers hated myself and their own life choices with a fiery passion and I don’t blame any of them.
I had one middle school teacher try to put a death grip on my shoulder to hurt me discreetly and another pull me into the hallway, pounded his fist against the wall, and tell me he was going to crack my skull. I was quite a shit.
I once had a middle school teacher take me and 2 of my friends into his office to ask us to stop making fart noises and interrupting the class. Naturally, at the first moment of silence, one of my friends made a fart noise and he freaked the fuck out, started cussing, and throwing shit while we struggled holding in laughter
Hell that’s just Tuesday for me, parter. Except I’m not in middle school. I’ll be getting my GED next summer.
The idea of teachers not being able to teach high school at 22 because they'll fuck the students is very funny
I’m going to preface this with saying that I have no idea if this is true but it was a big enough rumor to wear I believe(d) it. We had this very Italian “security guard” at our high school that would essentially groom girls and then hook up with them after they graduated.
I ain’t reading all of that but if your job states that you can’t have relationships with your students and the law says the same thing then you are a predator for doing it. You’re knowingly doing something you know is wrong to get what you want. That’s a predator. In OK you can’t even be in college under 21 and date a professor.
my 7th grade social studies teacher was clearly going through something as she showed up one monday morning with her hair cut short and dyed a pinkish color. she made the fatal mistake of asking the class what we thought of it and one kid politely raised his hand and said “ms chapman you look like a hooker” she ran out the classroom crying
Girls softball coach, resigned before he got fired and then managed to land a job as a middle school PE teacher until parents flipped out And now I discover hes still involved in softball here in town https://powermillsports.com/instructors/ Couple former Nole baseball players running it.....Im about to stir up some shit this fuckin city is such trash sometimes
Never taught but dealing with middle schoolers seems like it would be incredibly hard. That age group is like the intersection of insecurity and angst and they’ve just recently become cognizant enough to weaponize it.
I think if I made a list of the top 25 worst things I ever said to a person about 90% of them would fall in the middle school part of my life. Realizing how to hurt people with basically no filter is a bad combination. Bless those teachers
I gave my jr high and hs teachers absolute hell. Some of the things we said/did to them (pranks) were really terrible. We had 2 jr highs and only 1 hs so when all of us finally got to hs it was like a competition to see who could fuck with teachers the most.
I also from elementary through hs never had a single attractive female teacher. They were all in their 40’s and I knew them all from school and church. A teacher in my hometown is a really good gig. You gotta deal with shitheads like me but teachers would get hired with the intent of retiring because the pay rate was good. Especially if you coached or drove a bus as well.
When I was a junior/senior in high school, my HS hired a teacher who was just out of college and was a Chiefs cheerleader. Needless to say, she was a very popular addition to the staff. Some of the things said about/to/in front of her were absolutely wild. Over the years, I've socialized with her a few times and she is super nice and sweet too IRL so it's absolutely insane to me that she voluntarily taught high school.
you are a warrior those are the make or break years for kids and they need any and every quality teacher they can get
I’m fortunate, I work in a turning blue district that has always had quality public schools. We generally have good support, great class sizes etc.
love a really good gig with a pay rate so good that I have to drive a bus after hours to make ends meet
If Olathe is "turning blue" then this whole county is officially blue. This is a good thing. My in-laws live over by the new Olathe school (west?) and they literally have trump signs in their garage. I know Olathe is larger and more diverse than given credit for but I've always assumed it was a lost cause from all the rich white people that live south/west of 135th
We’re talking 90’s and teachers were making in the 30k range. Hell it’s 2025 and if you make $50k you’re doing well there. It’s why there were never any openings for new teachers unless someone retired. Adding the bus money on top of that and you were making good money. If your spouse worked as well then you were doing pretty damn good. I don’t think people realize how cheap the cost of living is in Arkansas. It’s why people retire there. Your dollar is worth more there than any other state. Edit: just looked it up and as of 2023 a livable salary for a single individual is $37,440 in my hometown.
So to address the worst teacher shortage I've seen in 17 years of public ed, we should reduce the number of applicants for open positions by putting a "25 and up" rule into place? Amazing stuff.
Well since we're putting me in charge we should also double, or triple in some cases, all teacher pay so we don't have such a shortage.
