I would guess a lot of us actually played it growing up. And with its increasing American tv presence its easier to watch. Not to mention it basically goes year round.

I'm kind of the same. I actually forgot to list them but they'd be lower down the list. That said, I don't even think it's debatable to me that I'd rather have a world cup win then a title in anything else. We're just so damn far away.

It's the amount of emotional investment some have in a random club in Europe that confuses me, but to each their own I guess.

For the purposes of this exercise, I'm considering USMNT its own separate entity. I will cheer for them because, well, I am American, so it's not like I'm going to choose some other international squad. Agreed with those that say a WC win would be the GOAT championship of them all.

It's the process of becoming a "diehard" of one of these European clubs that I struggle with.

I had Arsenal at 10% so I wouldn't consider myself as 'diehard' about them as some, but the affection is there and it came pretty naturally. Started watching seriously around the 2006 World Cup, favorite player to watch was Tomas Rosicky(avatar), found out he was headed to Arsenal so I just started watching their games. Then I got a chance to go to the UK and catch a couple games, but by then I was in. Great TV sport, especially in the morning on the weekends when you are not totally with it yet. Feel like it's similar situations for most of us, really easy game to catch on to and the nature of the TV exposure only helps

I am kind of there, but I say that as a relative newcomer soccer fan. I tried, gave it about 2 PL seasons, just couldn't form that attachment. Even though all the games are televised, the times were inconvenient for me and not having the local coverage and the ability to attend a game or two really limited my enthusiasm. If I ever make it overseas and have an opportunity to take in a game or two, that might change my tune.

I get that some people are just bigger soccer fans than me and fall in love with a team for whatever reason - favorite player, style of play, etc. But as a latecomer to soccer fandom, I needed the local tie of SKC/Wizards to really get into it, even though MLS is a goofy league and inferior soccer.

I think access has helped European soccer blow up. You can basically watch every game of any English team now along with the bigger clubs from other leagues. Even though I agree it is kinda weird to pick a random team, once you get "your team" watching them more and more certainly builds a bond. I paid 150 pounds to get live access to every Fulham game this season (46+ games) even though they aren't even in the premier league and I've watched at least part of probably 95% of the games this season. Going to a couple live matches a few years ago sealed the fandom. Also, its great that the games are two hours and come on early, so I don't have to blow full day on the couch. I don't have the patience to sit around and watch a 4 hour baseball game in the middle of the afternoon anymore. I love waking up early Saturday, making breakfast and watching soccer and I still have my whole day after. Also the season runs from August to May almost every weekend, so you don't go through the long off-seasons of other sports. Lots of reasons Soccer has basically risen to my #2 sport behind college football.

PSU grad, don't give a fuck about PSU sports at all though. Not for any good moral or ethical reasons, just never cared. That's not to say I don't love college football as it's probably my favorite season and why I am here in the first place. I do own a PSU toboggan and Lids cap that I never wear.

Pretty evenly allocated on my commitment levels. I've learned to adjust my expectations accordingly.
