Pro Prospects: U.S. Youngsters in Europe

Article Written by J.R. Eskilson, ESNN
    Published: October 24, 2012

Over the last eight months, Pro Prospects has featured a number of the players who are bursting onto the scene for clubs in Europe. This week’s edition provides an update on some of those players now that the new club soccer season has finally started rolling along.
Ben Lederman Promoted at FC Barcelona
After making an appearance with the U.S. U14 Boys National Team in August, 12-year-old Ben Lederman headed back to Spain to join his club team FC Barcelona. The Southern California-native is now playing with Infantil B at La Masia, the storied youth academy for the Catalan giants.
Two weeks ago, Lederman was highlighted as Man of the Match by the Barcelona-centric website totalbarca.com for his standout play in a 1-0 win over La Floresta.
“Ben was one of few players who managed to carve out openings for his teammates due to his ability to quickly transition the game from midfield to attack,” an author wrote on totalbarcain a report. “Being the first American in La Masia, there are a lot of expectations on Ben and so far he hasn’t disappointed.”

Kyle Scott and Chelsea U15 rack up awards
Chelsea FC captured the Premier League U15 International Tournament in late September thanks to the standout play U.S. U15 Boys National Team midfielder Kyle Scott.
Scott had the game-winner against Tottenham in pool play for the Blues, which topped West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in the final on September 30.
The exciting U.S. prospect was born in 1997, which is an off year for the U17 World Cup cycle, but Scott remains in the conversation for upcoming camps.
Julian Green trains with Bayern Munich’s first team
Tampa Bay born winger Julian Green continues to see his stock rise at Bayern Munich. Two weeks ago, Green trained for a few days and played in a scrimmage with the first team at the historic German club.
Over the weekend, Green scored a goal in Bayern Munich U19’s 3-4 loss to FSV Frankfurt. It was Green’s first goal of the season in eight appearances. The German American received his first call-up to the U.S. U18 Men’s National Team in September where he started and scored in a 4-2 win over the Netherlands.
Piakai Henkel, also a former player highlighted in the Pro Prospects series, started that game as well. Henkel now plays with Amiens FC in France after spending a couple of years with Paris Saint-Germain.
Le Mans U.S. Teenager continues to excel
Striker Maki Tall had two assists for Le Mans U19 in a 3-1 win over Racing Colombes 92 on Saturday. Two weeks ago, Tall had the game-winning goal for Le Mans in a 2-1 result over Bauvais.
The 16-year-old, who was born in Washington D.C., has yet to receive a call-up to a U.S. youth national team, but remains open to the possibility.

There's two at Boca, the other one is somehow named Nicolas Gaitan. But he grew up in New York and went down to Argentina a couple years ago. He's not eligible for the U-17 WC but is eligible for the 2015 U-20 WC.

Postcard from Europe: This kid's one to watch for USMNT

    NOVEMBER 7, 2012

AMSTERDAM – If you’re a fan of the US national team, the name Will Packwood may not move the needle for you. But if the 19-year-old’s career trajectory keeps going to plan, you will very, very soon.

The key word in the Jurgen Klinsmann era has been versatility. And Packwood is learning it very early in his first year as a professional at Birmingham City. At the rate he’s going, it’s not a stretch to say he could be a bona fide USMNT candidate for a center back stable seeking a transfusion of fresh blood.

Early appearances can be deceiving – the Boston-area native’s first four appearances for the Brums have been at right back. But first-year players are often used out of position as cover. Blessed with a 6-foot-2 frame, enough agility to fare well out wide and training as a traffic director, Packwood is aiming to be a modern stopper with distribution skills.

"Pretty much everyone here agrees my best position will be center back," he told MLSsoccer.com by phone from the club's training ground last week. "Having experience in midfield, I'm comfortable on the ball. And I have the size and physique to be a difficult defender to get past."

Of course, there aren't many tougher places for an American teen to break into European soccer than England's Championship – even for one able to sidestep the usual work permit hassle thanks to his English dad. Packwood's real hurdle is learning the pro ropes in the one of the fastest-paced leagues on the planet.

The Championship is not only a blur, it's tactically direct and can get rather physical at times. Sporting KC attacker Bobby Convey moved to Reading with MLS experience at 21, and it still took him a season as backup to find his way.

"It's a steep learning curve," admitted Packwood. "It's a difficult league, even for established players. I'm getting used to it as time goes and I play more games."

Only 18 months removed from captaining Birmingham's Under-18 side, he made his first-team debut at right back in a mid-August Capital One Cup win. The outing was strong enough for manager Lee Clark to start Packwood again a few days later in the league opener.

Now fully graduated from reserve-team play, the youngster has made three league starts and watched from the substitutes bench another seven times in 15 Championship matches. Despite the modest amount of playing time, he can already see the growth that comes from hitting the ground running at top speed.

"Playing games and training with the first team every day, it affects the way you see games," he said. "You're making better decisions, more quickly."

It's also doesn't hurt his development to have countryman Jonathan Spector as a teammate. Not only has the veteran played in Europe and made a World Cup squad, but he knows how to deal with repeated position changes.

"Having Specs around is fantastic," said Packwood. "He's been there and he's done it. He's a great role model."

And much like his “big brother” at Birmingham, Packwood has made waves with the US youth set-up. He was part of the American squad at the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, was on the third-place finishing U-18 squad at last summer’s Milk Cup, spent time in Caleb Porter's U-23 camp a year ago and made a handful of appearances for Tab Ramos’ U-20 side at last month’s Marbella Cup in Spain.

At Birmingham, the season so far has been a disappointment for the St. Andrews crew. It would be an understatement to say the Brums didn’t expect to be in 18th place a third of the way through the Championship season. But in Packwood’s corner is the fact that they’re 1-1-1 during his three starts with just three goals allowed. Compare that to their sub-.500 mark with 19 conceded in the other 12 games, and you figure the kid could become much busier as the season unfolds.

Putting some mid-autumn back woes behind him, defender James Hurst's loan return to West Bromwich Albion and the busy winter schedule also boost his chances for upcoming pitch time.

Nevertheless, the goal remains the same in the clubhouse, and the young American’s stated goals show he’s learning fast.

"Our goal is to win promotion to the Premier League," declared Packwood. "We want to be in the playoffs, or even pushing for [automatic] promotion.”

Sooner or later, he could be pushing for much more than that.

Pro Prospects: SoCal teen joins Pachuca

Article Written by J.R. Eskilson, ESNN
    Published: November 7, 2012

Moving to a foreign country at the age of 14 years old would make any teenager nervous, but just imagine how the parents would feel.
Renee Lotenero and Steve Siegrist faced that dilemma just a few months ago when their son Ethan Lotenero had the opportunity to take his development to the next stage and join C.F. Pachuca’s youth academy.
Ethan, born in 1998, is an exceptional talent who appeared with the U.S. U14 Boys National Team in its original camp last year, which set off a string of events that led to his eventual arrival at the Mexican club.
When he was not invited to the next U14 BNT camp a few months later in 2011, Ethan went to play with his club at Surf Cup in San Diego instead. There he was scouted by Liverpool and asked to go on a weeklong trial with the English club.
He did well on the trial and the Reds were interested in his services, but without a European Union passport yet (his mother is in the final stages of gaining her Italian citizenship), Lotenero was not eligible to stay with the club.
The “once-in-a-lifetime” chance in Liverpool also kept the youngster away from an ODP event that is heavily scouted by the U.S. youth national teams.
While he wants that chance to impress the youth national team coaching staff again, it has not slowed the teenager down from taking other chances with his club choices.
In essence, Lotenero’s big break came in April when he appeared at Dallas Cup as a guest player with Galaxy Black. His team did not advance out of the first round due to goal differential, but Lotenero impressed the Pachuca scout in attendance and received an invite to go on trial with the club.
“He went down in June for a weeklong trial,” Steve Siegrist, Ethan’s stepfather, told TopDrawerSoccer.com. “He loved it!”
Siegrist said Pachuca wanted to bring him in then, but both Ethan and his parents decided to wait and assess his options in Southern California. And while there were many, none of them came close to what Pachuca offered the youngster.
“We don’t have anything like that in the U.S. yet,” Siegrist, who spent five days at the complex in September when he dropped off his son, added. “It is the top of the line facility with his dorm, school, and training field all in the same complex.”
Over the last few weeks, Lotenero has adjusted to the conditions in Pachuca (about 8,000 feet above the sea), language (he only knew textbook Spanish when he arrived), and playing style (he has moved from forward to center midfielder).
The youngster has played with the 1996, 1997, and 1998 age group since his arrival. Siegrist revealed that his son was the youngest foreign player currently at the academy.
For this calendar year, there is no pressure on the Southern California teenager to contribute right away.
“It is like family down there,” Siegrist said. “They understand the adjustment can be difficult and just want him to feel comfortable.”
The plan is to get him ready for next season where Lotenero will feature with the U15s.

Out of this group: Luis Gil, Marc Pelosi, Benji Joya, and Jose Villarreal are guys to watch. Omar Salgado would be too but he's still rehabbing an injury.

We're also missing our top 4 CB's in this camp: John Anthony Brooks, Will Packwood, Sean Cunningham, and Walker Zimmerman.

U.S. U18 Men’s National Team forward Paul Arriola on trial
U.S. Youth International Paul Arriola (No. 8 in the IMG Academy Top 150 for the class of 2013) announced on his Twitter account this week that he is headed back to Club Tijuana for another trial.
The former U.S. U17 Men’s National Team standout had a training stint with the champions of Mexico earlier this year.
Arriola’s interest in jumping to the professional ranks is well documented with the 17-year-old telling TopDrawerSoccer.com that he was exploring professional opportunities even during his college recruiting process.
Former U.S. U17 MNT defender Mobi Fehr joins Portland Timbers
Following a weighted lottery on Tuesday, U.S. U18 Men’s National Team center back Mobi Fehr was awarded to the Portland Timbers.
Fehr is a technically sound player who had a brief stint with FC Basel in 2012. His style of play should fit in well with Caleb Porter’s vision.

U20 (starts a week from today) and U17 WCQ will be broadcasted on FSC.

U20's beat Jamaica 2-1 in a prep game yesterday, goals from Villarreal and Joya. They'll play Jamaica again tomorrow.

Jerome Kiesewtter, forward from Stuttgart (dual German American) was added to the U20 roster today, and there will be another player added soon.
