Two good chances in very good goal scoring positions lead to two weak left footers. Surprised how Canada is winning all balls and controlling the mid.
Morris is fast but also extremely strong. I think his best position long term is as a winger. Excellent pass by Trapp on that goal.
An issue was too many similar players out there at the same time such as Trapp, Hyndman, and Zelalem. Plus, Alashe playing as the #6. We need a CM to play higher like Luis Gil. Fullbacks struggled a bit, and of course, that's not Polster or Sena's natural positions. Miazga is a beast. Has the potential to play at a very high level in Europe someday.
Really annoying display from Zelly. Didn't make himself an outlet and hid the majority of the time from what I saw. Had 1 nice turn but that was about it.
Any idea where/when U21 Josh Doughty will make a decision on which country to play for? British parents, Canadian born but lived most of his life in Arizona. Played with RSL academy but now with Man U. Could play for all three.
@BrianSciaretta: When I spoke to Wil Trapp in Kansas City, he mentioned that his Greek passport should be in hand within months. Certainly could open doors As a Crew fan this is worrisome. As a US fan I know long term it is probably best for him
I would expect a lot of subs tonight. Canada has a large GD to overcome. This way to qualify is dumb. If we win the group we then have to win another game against the 2nd place team in the other group to qualify. If we lose we face the loser of the other game for the right to play Columbia for a spot. Not sure why group winners don't qualify and the 2nd place in group play for the right to play Columbia.
If we win or tie we place second. Do winners of the two groups play the second team on the other side in the semis? I'm guessing that would mean a date with the Mexicans.
Semi 1- Group A 1st - Group B 2nd - Winner to Olympics Semi 2 - Group B 1st - Group A 2nd - Winner to Olympics Loser Semi 1 vs Loser Semi 2 - Winner faces Columbia to go to Olympics
Mexico and Honduras are both on 6 points (Mexico holds GD advantage) and they play tomorrow. Advance and you'll play winner (or Mexico if they draw) US will play loser (Honduras if a draw). Possible that US/Mexico U23s play at 5EST Saturday to get into the Olympics and then Men's teams play at 9:30 to get into Confederations Cup
Brian Sciaretta @BrianSciaretta Canada 2-1 Cuba - 75th minute. If score holds, the U.S. U-23s win group with win, draw, or loss that's not worse than 6 goals.
Yeah I've been watching the last 15 minutes or so. Cuba and Canada both missed chances recently. That Cuba miss would've sealed it
Canada holds for the draw after a late Cuba corner US wins the group Canada on 4 points with 0 GD Cuba with 2 and -5 Panama on 1 point with -2 GD so Canada needs US to lose by no more than 2 (as long as that score line is 2-0). That or better keeps puts them in the semi vs Group B winner.
@BrianSciaretta: U.S. U-23 starting XI vs. Panama: Horvath; Okwuonu, Carter-Vickers, Serna; Gil, Polster; Zelalem; Ariyibi, Tall, Hernandez (4-2-1-3) No Trapp. He's on a yellow
Not the best sign that Zelalem doesn't seem like a starter on this team... maybe just Herzog sending a message.
Midfield is a strong area and I believe he's seen plenty of time so I'm not sure what you're talking about
I mean this line-up is completely different from the ones that started the first two matches, clearly a collection of mostly substitute players, which I think Herzog sees Zelalem as part of right now. There's only what, 3 guys starting tonight who started either of the first two matches? Kid got pulled after 60 minutes in the first match, didn't play in the second, and watched his replacement have a great game against Cuba.
Just for reference, Zelalem (and CCV) are age eligible for the 2020 Olympics, Luis Gil is 40 months older than Zelalem.
Again we have a stacked midfield with Hyndman, Trapp, Zelalem, Gil, Polster and a lot of them are similar yet he's going to see plenty of minutes. I'm not sure what your issue is or why it would be concerning even if he was considered a backup in that midfield.
squad has a great shot to build upon New Zealand + add in the U-23 eligibles for a deep run in Brazil do they still allow each team to add in 3 designated over-23 players?
I like this team. Fun to watch in the U-20 WC and fun to watch here even if the competition isn't so great. The play hasn't been stellar but you can see some real promise in some of these players.
