I'm not saying there isn't better wrestling in PA, Ohio, and NJ than Indiana. There clearly is. Chad Red has beaten off the top of my head Luke Pletcher X2, Taylor LaMont X2, Nick Lee, Jose Rodriguez, Jaden Enriquez, George Phillippi, Kanen Storr...that's an impressive resume. Spencer Lee is obviously special, but he's two weight classes below Red (132-120) and he lost twice in a row to Daton Fix (From Oklahoma) at cadet team trials. PA wrestling is great, but that doesn't mean Chad Red wouldn't run the table there, because he absolutely would have.
If the one Lee/Fix match would have been folkstyle it would have been about 8-3 Lee. Lee was the absolute agresser in that match. As it was it wasn't folkstyle, there probably would have been at least a stalling call against Fix as well. Lee's #1 on intermat for a reason. If Red and Lee met at 125/126 I'd take my chances. That said I believe Lee won world gold freestyle in Brazil in at 48 sec stoppage? Fun argument- I'll agree Spencer sucks when he commits to Iowa. None of this shit matters until they get in a college uni anyway - see Jimmy Guilbon. What's your take on B1G seeds?
Initial thoughts: JDJ has been overrated all season, nice to see someone finally get it right. #5-#8 at 141 is a tough call. Gulibon behind Sabatello seems wrong, and as a result we get micah-gulibon in the quarters. Neither OSU nor PSU wanted that. Was hoping Myles Martin would be seeded #6 so he could have avoided Bo in the semi's and instead gone through Brunson and Meyer, but no luck. Those were the matches I wanted to see. Coon #1 over Snyder? I guess. Nevills ranking will probably have people complaining from both sides. PSU fans probably wanted him #6 to avoid Coon/Snyder, non-PSU fans probably don't think he should even be ranked. I think it's about right. Getting Coon in the QF is a tough draw.
Wedding anniversary is on Sunday obviously same day as championships. Trying to schedule a party at my house for my friends all while telling my wife that I love her.
kyle crutchmer injured. Really helps Bo's chance of a title at 174. Only Realbuto in his way IMO. Maybe Brunson but I don't think so.
Out of curiosity, what are the 10 best (produce most top D1 talent, or whatever) wrestling states and in what subjective order?
It's kind of cyclical, but I'd as of right now I'd say PA is at the top, OH is maybe #2. Then there's IL, NJ, CA in tier two....MN, IA, OK I'd put tier three, but you can make an argument for any of the three for tier 2. MI i'd put next.
I'd agree with most that has been said above. 1. PA 2. Ohio 3. NJ There are some states that have good wrestling but just by size/pop can't compete with the above 3. For instance MD and the Dakotas have good wrestling but not too much depth. You can't lose going to the state finals of any of the above three states - especially the PA big school championship. I went to the Alabama state tournament back in the early 2000's - woof It was held in a gym smaller then my high school gym and I went to a small PA school. Wrestling in some areas really drops off especially the south.
Right on. I went to Wisconsin and I lived in a 7 bedroom spot my last year there. It was in between a couple of bars. We always had people over- pretty much an open door policy. Kids on the wrestling team would come in all of the time- bunch o' savages. The state tournament was also in Madison and you would see kids walking around with their jackets and pins all over them. I thought that was funny. I grew up in a state with no wrestling. I would have liked to wrestle, though.
Tyler Warner of of Claymont lost in the 120 semi finals going for his 4th state title. 1st time that has ever happened. Kid who beat him lost in finals to Warner and then has had 3rd, 3rd. Pretty crazy
Nevills can still finish top 6, but he has to wrestle well to get there. He looked like shit just now
How do they determine byes? From osu prospective not having Bo and Snyder elimantes bonus point potential. I know other teams studs had byes too. Just curious
OHSAA finals are in a few hours. Josh Demas' little brother is undefeated on the year and in the final against a kid with 1 loss who has 2 falls and a tech fall so far in the tourney. Demas is the #8 145 on Intermat, the kid he's wrestling is #2. I'd imagine Demas may end up at OSU
The kid he's wrestling is David Carr, a top tier 2018 kid and probably OSU's top target in that class.
That match alone would be worth the price of admission. Will be checking for that video on flo and will post here
I think Demas will wrestle at 157 like his brother. Carr has room to grow and I think he'll be at 165. Kaleb Romero (2017) and Rocky Jordan (2018) both could project at 165 as well.
OSU had a terrible round. I think only 4 wrestlers still alive in the champ bracket. Iowa and PSU have 3 head to head matches in the semis, that should go a long way to determining the overall champ.
They had a horrible round, but not because 6 guys lost--they were dogs in 4 or 5 of the 6. They had a terrible round because Micah Jordan lost. Their chances of winning the title ended there. Jake Ryan also could have beaten Edwin Cooper Jr but he probably was a dog there as well with home mat advantage going the other way.
Yea with the Bucks depth not being good, Micah loss killed. For them to have a chance at anything team wise they needed 25,41,65 and hwt in finals. Tonight with Martin will be fun again. I enjoyed his match against Nichol in the dual, Martin gassed so easy though.
The reason why they are such a strong tournament team is that they had threats to win titles at 125, 141, 165, and 285. They needed to get there at those weights and for Martin to beat Nichol. I still think he can do it but it sure won't be easy. Martin is wrestling really well right now though.
Is BTN plus hard to cancel, this is going to be my deciding factor in whether I purchase it for tonight.
