Don't understand why any EPL club would be after Neymar. Obviously a phenomenal talent, but Brazilians have a history of struggling in the EPL, and somebody who weighs 125 lbs soaking wet will not last long in the EPL.

There's only going to be a 3-5 teams in the world that'll pony up for Lukaku when Anderlecht decides to sell.

The inflation of English players will never fail to amaze me, Ashley Young valued at $28 million? Inter Milan paid less for Wesley Sneijder, Tottenham paid half that for VDV.

Admittedly I haven't been religiously following the comments of Henry and co, but weren't they preaching the need for squad depth? Since they aren't spending sheikh money, wouldn't you rather them commit that roughly 20m into a couple of quality players?

Lukaku is incredibly talented so he may be one of the outliers that they feel is worth the investment, but I think the core squad may be a more pressing need.

Sure you can, if you are smart about it. You can't get world class players for less than 20, but you can get to starting XI caliber players for under 20. Afellay and Hernanes (Lazio midfielder) cost a total of under 15M for example.

I disagree. Just this season in the Premier League you could have signed

    Chamakh Kenwyne Jones/Chicharito

    Odemwingie van der Vaart

and be right at 20 million.

As long as Citeh doesn't join in the bidding, you can get some bang for your buck. I would expect Hazard and Turan to go for 10-15 mil, when they leave their respective clubs.

Chamakh was free and I think we give him 70k a week.

Rafa's policy might have worked if half of his signings weren't complete busts.

My original question was more about the philosophy in building the new Liverpool. I just thought it was interesting that they had mentioned the need for squad depth, then would commit a significant chunk of change into an incredibly talented (but still very unproven 17 year old) Lukaku.

My goal was just to show that you can build depth with the 20 million and boost the squad as a whole. I wasn't trying to cherrypick players, I was just going off the top of my head from the most recent transfer window.

Odemwingie has produced at every stop for both club and country. It was just a tidy piece of business by West Brom to pick him up from Lokomotiv Moscow at that price.

Hernandez is averaging twice as many goals per 90 as N'Gog. My point isn't that he is better or should be starting for Liverpool. It's just that he is a quality player that has had an impact while providing depth.

I'm just saying with proper scouting you can use the money to have make the team considerably deeper. I was not intending to poke you or Liverpool. I was just curious what you thought.

Man City is out of control:

Manchester City have alerted football's top agents that they are willing to write off close to £100 million worth of players in the January transfer window.

Joleon Lescott, Wayne Bridge, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Emmanuel Adebayor, Roque Santa Cruz and Jo have been earmarked either to be sold off at cut-rate prices or loaned out with the club willing to pay 50% of the players' wages.

I think you are missing my point. I am in no way attacking Liverpool's transfer history or saying they should have signed those players last term. I'm just showing that there will be quality players that will be available for less than 10m. It is possible if they scout and play their cards right they could get a few bargains and get deeper. Even Vidic, Evra, Park, Foster, and VDS went for less than 20 total at the same time Chelsea were inflating the market.

I was just curious what you thought about the move and understandably you would be for it.

edit: I forgot that Park and Foster came in that same year.

Me making my point and you accepting it are completely different things.

My argument is and has always been that you could build quality depth with the money. There is a direct quote from your owner saying that your team lacks it, and that is what they need. If you want to argue those signings would not provide depth, there is really no point in continuing. Please don't say I've changed the argument because this is the exact same thing I said from my very first post.

    :jizz: on all players mentioned

    Also would add:

ROMELU LUKAKU is liked by AC Milan and Juventus according to the player’s agent.

Lukaku is only 17-year-old but he has already developed into a key player in R.S.C. Anderlecht and also in the Belgium national team, as he’s widely considered the most promising striker in the world.

The player has been linked with a move to England, with the Premier top clubs interested in his services. However, his agent noted that AC Milan and Juventus ‘like’ the player, but haven’t made an official approach or submitted a bid yet.

“I know that the player is liked by Juventus and Milan, but only indirectly. Until they contact me directly then I cannot speak of a real interest,” the agent told Calciomercatoweb.it.

“There were some informal surveys, but I have not been contacted and I have not received any signs to take things forward. For now there are no negotiations, and furthermore I don’t think Anderlecht will sell in January.”
