You're in Florida right? Can't imagine how many assholes you'd be dealing with if you talked politics.
Oh, sorry, you may not have realized that right wingers have spent a century conflating communism and fascism on the grounds that both are authoritarian. Your use of the term authoritarian was rather reminiscent of that propaganda. Similarly, your response seems to suggest that there's no such thing as libertarian communism, which there is.
Those groups are only able to create insular bubbles within a broader capitalist framework by exporting their suffering and outsourcing the massive state violence needed to sustain the system. It's completely myopic to pretend the US can simply do democratic socialism without collapsing capitalism.
I'm happy to learn about how best to delineate auth vs libertarian that doesn't upset you, but also yes if you say communism people are going to assume it's the by far most popular variants that are authoritarian. We've had this discussion many times so will fast forward
I eagerly look forward to participating in liberalism, with no authoritarianism, when there's a non-genocide candidate at the national level.
Im a pretty social and outgoing guy but my rule of thumb in social settings like this are, air pod in (even though it’s not playing anything), crossed arms, scowl on face, avoid eye contact at all costs.
the difference between Trump and Biden is enormous on everything else but this situation. If this one thing moves the needle enough for you that you’re willing to risk a second Trump term I truly hope you get what you wish for. I hope that my coastal bubble protects me and mine enough.
Thanks for the response. I completely get your position, especially as someone in a red state whose vote won’t hold much weight.
You say this like it's a minor issue. We're talking about our 'liberal' government not just turning away from but actively facilitating the industrial slaughter of a captive population. Ending the drug war and pardoning prisoners on those grounds and strong-arming states into doing the same might come close in terms of human impact. Revolutionizing healthcare access in the US might come close. But eradicating 30,000 kids in six months is, uh, it's something pretty big. Journalists, doctors, foreign aid workers, teachers-- erased.
And that's to speak nothing of police 'liberally' brutalizing Americans for having the audacity to ask their 'liberal' government to respond appropriately, humanely.
I am an unabashed liberal and have said as much many times on this board. It pains me that my fellow libs are abandoning the central tenet of a liberal democracy - that the voters can use their vote to demand representatives that will actually represent their beliefs. That’s the only way that this system can ever hope to work.
When a group of really powerful people with interests quite divorced from the majority of the country conspire to offer you a really bad deal or a really really bad deal, everyone is too afraid of the really really bad deal to ask for a good one. It's pretty genius. Just need blocs like the one on TMB-- the W to Biden, college-educated, suburban white guy-- to focus their energy on real organization and not on the Kabuki show.
I have never once said this is a minor issue and I resent you saying that. I have made my opinion clear and that I’m not willing to overlook things that will impact my loved ones here that I personally don’t feel comfortable risking a second trump term. I’m just tired of arguing with those whom are willing to put women’s reproductive rights further at risk, who are okay with having immigrants victimized further, those who are willing to risk members of the LGBTQ community to treated as less than human by risking a second Trump term. We can do this shit all day. This is issue is your breaking point and I respect that I just see other things as being important to me. Hopefully you’ll afford me the same respect I’ve given you. If not that’s fine
I don't know why you took it as disrespectful; that wasn't the intention. Women's reproductive rights could have been protected by the Dems strategically or legally multiple times, not least of which was in 2009. They did nothing, allowing it to be a hot button issue for future contests. They've been rewarded, the rights have been eroded, and we're back to trying to reward them? It doesn't add up to me. But as I said on the previous page to THEBLUERAIDER, and as I've said in the past, if your calculus is different, that's fine. I consider it a necessary part of taking democracy seriously.
I took it as disrespectful because you implied that I don’t think it’s a big deal which I do. I’ve also been crystal clear about my feelings about the democrats. I hate them and until 16 I had never voted for them. So I agree the democrats could have done a bunch of shit and didn’t. But, what the gop did do bothers me more. What they did with roe v wade scares me more than the democrats anger me. Hope that makes sense. So my calculations are that I believe trump will be worse for Palestine (but for the sake of argument I am willing to concede they will both equally horrible). So here is the problem for me if I don’t think trump will be better for Palestine how can I risk him fucking them up as bad as Biden has and fucking America too? The argument of “fuck us too” just doesn’t resonate with me. If anyone could honestly say and prove that trump would somehow benefit the Palestinian people maybe I’d listen but no one can say that because it’s not true. So yeah I agree fuck Biden for this situation I just don’t see how Trump would be any better.
Given the history of Ole Miss and the make-up of the student body on that campus, I think it takes courage to speak up and protest, especially since Governor Tate is echoing their old segregationist governor on Twitter right now. Ole Miss admins might want that place to progress, but the roots of hate will always be there.
tough to get away with shit with all the surveillance and whatnot these days, but dude should not get away with that, if you know what I mean.. hint- I ain't talking about involving the cops
me too. I've seen several similar things recently. Instant mute and block but they'll just repopulate with some other bot ad
I slammed on breaks yesterday for 2 goddam ducks. I am not going to run someone over but thanks for asking
I don't bother anymore with people who wouldn’t be in my MySpace top 8. No one is capable of having a nuanced conversation about anything. Tonight I just corrected someone who thought I still worked in the school system and it resulted in a whole lot of people sharing how great it is that the universities in the state are "cracking down" on the protests while parroting all the right wing talking points that have been permeating the zeitgeist over the last few months. I just started watching practice more intently and made notes on what I can help my son with at home.
This is the crux of the issue with the democratic party. Instead of feeling like they have to earn peoples votes they feel entitled to them. How dare you not vote for me? See Hilary "Get over yourself." We have to save democracy because this is an existential threat. Okay I agree this is an existential threat. Why aren't you as elected official doing everything in your power to prevent this existential threat? Why are you antagonizing young voters that came out in droves for you in the last election? You're doing the bare minimum to combat this exentistial crisis and then have the nerve to accuse the people you serve of being apathetic about it . You're the reason they feel the apathy. And you're the reason for the existential threat. And you've always been the reason.
you’re 100% correct and this used to be the case for both parties. They’d feel entitled to their block of voters. But, I think now the democrats are still playing the old game by the old rules and the gop is actively doing evil shit. Yes the democrats should be doing shit to earn your votes (they are in a lot of ways) but the gop is going out of its way to prove how evil they are. The two parties are not remotely comparable anymore. Unfortunately we live in a binary system that’s what we have. The choice is yours to make but it’s clear which one is better.
After many years in corporate America, anyone knows the quickest way to clear a building is by microwaving fish in the break room. No need for police, just some of last night’s cod should do the trick.
