This before these made me lol. Calling anyone a “coward” for following guidelines is beyond stupid and pathetic.
about as bad a look as getting covid from hanging out with joe rogan and elon musk but even babe ruth struck out a bunch
Daniel Ocean I'm definitely not in a "defend Dave" mood but he's definitely going after people who were critical of his choices, not merely folks who have been following guidelines. He's still being an asshole, certainly.
I don’t want to argue cause I don’t want to attack DC. But, you’re right and imo it’s a fine line. It comes of as he can’t handle being criticized. I think some if not most gave him a pass for being someone we like. Most celebrities get a lot of shit for doing what he did. He seemed to get a pass and well wishes from most. As a fan of his I am glad he is okay. If he was a chud comedian we’d probably be saying “fuck him for his response after endangering others”.
The problem with comedians is that as they age they start to lose the thread and their acts come off more and more as just airing grievances.
He was going after Schulz/Flagrant 2 for sure. Maybe not just them, but for sure they got his attention. They made the point that Dave was being obtuse for not acknowledging that in that era Dave was somewhat unknown in the sketch comedy scene (certainly not a slam dunk in the sketch comedy category). Comedy Central made lots of deals. Some failed and some were hits. The hits had to finance the failures. In retrospect THE “Chappelle Show” was immensely under-compensated relative to how successful it was, but they argued “you signed the deal.” That’s my best recollection of their statements, and it dropped right in between Schulz’s “turn your phone” monologues that went viral and the debut of his Netflix special. There’s no doubt he (Dave) got word that “the kid” was taking a shot at him.
I probably need to go to bed. I do think Dave expected unanimous support from comedians and he didn’t get that.
This was Louis when he tried to make a comeback in clubs. Once he got seen as a POS, his aggravation toward the topics that made us laugh suddenly went a step too far and were no longer funny. I don’t think that will happen here. I would bet that how the first part of this gets perceived will be addressed down the road.
#Hottake, but Dave kinda sucks now. He still has multiple moments of unbelievable clarity, but in every single routine there's a whole shitload of this now: A lot of it comes off as old man blaming the kids.
Yeah, Dave is conscious enough to hopefully respond to criticism and at least clarify what he meant. Not that he’s right but misses happen.
No doubt. Chappelle was the funniest man on the planet for at least a five year period and it was because of how plugged in he was to the zeitgeist and his perspective was unmatched. It’s only natural that time would change that.
I tried to clean it up a bit. Flagrant 2 started as a sports podcast and became comedy with sports mixed in. Andrew Schulz is the main guy. Joe Rogan mentors him heavily and, apropos of Dave’s predicament, Rogan has taught Andrew to “be his own brand” and not be dependent on big network deals. If you like comedy podcasts, give Flagrant 2 a shot. He’s the same guy from Brilliant Idiots etc. Andrew has worked on projects with Charlemagne etc and his reach during the pandemic exploded with his “Turn Your Phone” monologues he releases on Instagram every week.
I also think some part of what he’s trying to say is he was trying to give some fucking sort of normal, while being as safe as possible, and it backfired. If he never gets COVID, the shows are probably all looked as great efforts to people struggling with normalcy. And probably no one says a damn thing negative about them. As soon as he tested positive, it gave those biting their tongue about it the opportunity to say “ah ha!” They’re only cowards in that they didn’t speak up prior, not because they follow guidelines and stay inside.
Fair enough. He and Charlemagne stay at odds with each other. But Andrew and Tim Dillon are two guys who capitalized on the pandemic in a huge way. I like Flagrant 2 and Bill Burr’s podcast because it’s the rare overlap of funny and sports. Most comedians don’t seem to like sports.
I would say mentored from a business model perspective more than a pseudoscience / pseudo-intellectual perspective. But it’s not for everybody, and I can respect that.
I think you're right about a lot of that but the idea that what his efforts provided was anything close to "normal" is kind of funny to me. I mean he was flying his friends into podunk Ohio where they were met with significant surveillance/testing infrastructure and performing for hyper local audiences.
I admittedly didn’t know this part. I was unaware of additional performers at any of his shows, based on what i’d seen.
I don't think Dave is that different now than he used to be in terms of the stuff he talks about. I think the expectations of him changed and it disappoints people more when he doesn't live up to what they think he is. As for the "old man blaming the kids" thing, I think it's just hard to be the same comedian you were at 25 when you were trying to make it when you're 45, made it and have all that fame/money. You can't connect with people in the same way, and the way people respond to you is different. I don't think it's blaming the kids as much as just not understanding the perspective of people you now live above socially.
Oh yea it was crazy He had all kinda comedians/music friends rolling through, and everyone was tested vigorously so that any of those who passed could hang out together as "normal" And then they would all perform for those hyper local audiences, which you have to imagine the majority of em aren't making trips to see these sorts of shows in normal times lol
the weirdest thing about Dave losing touch with normal people and the regular culture is you'd think his choice to live in random wherever ohio would have helped but i guess he still keeps that shelter bubble in place even if he's not in LA or Austin or wherever with the cultural bubble you get there
hes still largely great and better than 90% of whats out there it's just you never feel like he totally is in sync anymore that all his older stuff did
To expand on this, Dave’s perspective as a black man in America is incredibly important. His perspective as a rich man in America less so.
Nothing will ever reach the heights of Killin’ Them Softly or For What It’s Worth. That’s simply by virtue of those being two of the greatest comedy sets ever.
i think your point that him losing the ability to make class critiques, except from the 1% vantage point, is correct in why he'll never be able to square a whole set again
