Something tells me that’s likely a burner and/or joke account. Not sure if it’s the single 69 or the 6969 or the 1 following.
Southern Cal guys, what did McCoy do? “Oregon just hired Drew Mehringer as their new TE coach. Mehringer was the coach who pulled Bru McCoy away from SC and to Texas. He and Bru became very close during his recruitment and he may have been the coach he had the most connection with. Mehringer’s falling out of favor with Texas HC Tom Herman and Bru’s suspicions that he’d soon be fired was a factor in Bru deciding to transfer back home. Oregon hiring Mehringer gives Bru an option on the west coast he’s already got a close connection with, so expect them to make a run at him if (when?) he’s forced to enter the transfer portal. Just a hunch, though.”
All he did was take multiple 3* RBs and put them in the NFL. It would be a big loss for Whittingham and a great hire by Riley.
Sure, and since the guy they hired is a good developer I’m worried if he’s a good recruiter (since Utah is traditionally awful at that).
Context is important here. Utah goes about it differently than Oregon and USC, but its not awful. Put yourself in the shoes of a Utah recruiter going up against Oregon’s Nike money and glitz or USC/UCLA’s sparkle. It’s a hard place to recruit to, so they target under-recruited players who they feel have raw ability that can be developed into PAC12 level talent and can be coached within their system. Evaluation is their strength. It’s not unlike Jimbo Fisher’s approach to recruiting in that particular regard. Utah recruiting has improved a lot since it joined the league. From 2011-2015 Utah recruiting classes were consistently in the basement (ranked about 10th in the league). From 2016-2021 around 6th. The current class is ranked 3rd. So, they not only continue to recruit development-friendly and coachable players, but the talent level has steadily improved (but it’s not great by any measure). Whit had a recruiting plan and it is working. You can call this awful if you want to. Compared to higher profile programs it probably is. On the other hand it’s…UTAH.. it played in the Rose Bowl.. it barely lost to Ohio State. That’s not exactly the description of a program with awful recruiting.
The Banks That’s a cool chart. Thank you for posting it. At first glance I see that quite a few of the top spenders are programs that are (1) Isolated and outside of the best recruiting areas, and (2) Are committed to football success. In the Top 20 these are Oregon, Tennessee, Clemson, Minnesota, Utah, Nebraska, Kentucky, Louisville and Arkansas. Utah spends a lot, officially, because the coaches have to travel, travel, travel. The finances not given in that chart are the under the table bags and the like. For the major programs the $$$ are in the several millions. Utah doesn’t spend that kind of money that way. It doesn’t have access to it. Utah spent that money in 2019 to recruit 4 4*, and 14 3* players. 7th in the PAC 12 and 41st nationally. Oregon spent a similar official amount to recruit 1 5*, 11 4* and 14 3 * players. 1st in the PAC 12 and 7th nationally. That’s a HUUUGE difference. Yet 3 seasons later Utah kicked Oregon’s ass all over the field, not once, but twice. Not included here is the huge difference brought about by Mario Cristobal’s SEC-style unofficial $$ spending. Call Utah’s recruiting “awful” if you want to. The on-field results tell a different story.
