Damn, missed the last 2 pics being posted. Badass. The guy that owns the black JK in the 2nd pic is the same guy that owns this:

He told me he has about $60k in the LJ. Can't imagine what he has in the JK. He just shipped the LJ to Saudi bc he's moving back there.

How much does it cost to make a wrangler a badass off-road vehicle?

Depends on your definiton of "badass". It also depends on what you start with. Probably anywhere from $3-10k.

I have a 94 wrangler that I left in the midwest when I moved to LA and eventually to DC. I am likely moving back to the midwest within the next few months and have considered making it a toy (left it when I graduated from college; now I :rain:). It has no customization currently. Would $10k make it fun? Is there a lot of upkeep?

Up keep depends on how hard you beat on it. 10K would go a long way if you're smart about where you buy your parts and if you do the install.

Came across these while in my photobucket. Upgraded my tunes a while back. Put in a new soundbar, pulled the default speakers out and put in Kickers. Local shop took the backseat out, cut all of the cushion and springs out, and built a box into it. I now have 2 12" subs in the bottom of my back seat. Completely stealth. You can only see if if I flip the backseat forward. I can have the top down and doing 70 on the interstate and still feel like I'm front row at a concert.

Like I said, really depends on what you started with. Honestly, all you need is axles ($3k), wheels ($200-$1200), tires ($1k), brakes ($500?) and a few more little things (sye, intake/exhaust, etc) and you'd be good to go. If you spent $10k, you'd have a retarded rig. Could probably keep it under $5k and still have a sweet rig. And like thunder said, it really depends on how hard you beat on it. If you're just doing slow trail riding, not much. If you're trying to climb 40 foot rocks, a lot.

Same. Everything they make is awesome. They look like stock on steroids. I'm not a huge fan of the flat fenders and all so I love AEV bc they keep it stock-ish.

I can already see a 3" body lift, which is IMO, an awfully cheap and unsafe way to lift a vehicle that probably is representative to the general way the owner went about the rest of the modifications and up keep of it. This can also be seen by all of the cheap chrome bolt on parts that serve little to no purpose.

Don't be sold by it having a 350ci under the hood either, I highly doubt the guy has swapped in stronger axles to handle that kind of HP. I would be pretty confident to say that he probably has the stock D35 in the back which is capable of snapping shafts under torque from the stock 4 cylinder engines.

Hmm, just saw this. Not a bad deal. Really had to tell just from the ad, though. Would have to know 1) what kind of shape the engine is in 2) what kind of lift is on it and 3) what axles are on it. For all we know, he's got 37's on a D35 that's waiting to explode. If it's done right, that's a very good deal. Just hard to tell.

The wave is pretty common around here, especially with the guys in any of the clubs. For instance, I waved this morning when you let me in traffic.

Jeep wave rules are good for a chuckle:

What they'd charge for labor/customization? And is the backseat still "rideable" for passengers w/ everything stripped out? Where's the amp?

Labor was $500. I bought a new soundbar and they pulled the speakers and tweeters out of it and mounted up the Kickers you see. They also pulled everything out of the backseat and built a custom box in it. Not bad for $500, imo. As for "rideable", definitely. FafaFofo has ridden on it. It's a little stiffer than a regular seat bc there's only about 1" of padding on top of the box but it's fine for what I need. I wouldn't want to ride on it for a 6 hour trip, but for someone to hop back there just around town, no big deal. The amp is under a false floor in the back. Lost about 6" of storage back there but that's not a big deal. I still have most of my trunk and can throw stuff on top of it bc of the floor. When I had the tub bedlined, I had them do the false floor, too. The entire system is stealth, which was my goal.

I think the guys enjoyed doing it bc it was something different than the regular mount a head unit type job they get. I dropped my seat off and told them I was in no rush. They just worked on it in their spare time. Took about 2 weeks total.

I hadn't noticed how rough the ride side of the back looks from taking the floor in and out. I have to take it out to put the seat up bc the legs of the seat hit the floor. I put it right back in after it's up. It really should be about 1/2 inch shorter on each side bc now it rubs the back walls as it slides in. Need to get that touched up back there at some point. Of course, the bedliner shouldn't scratch like that. The stuff they sprayed it with was waaaay too soft. Not happy with it at all. Should have just gone with LineX.

I got mine for $26K on a weekend where Jeep had 0% financing on new Wranglers. As far as what you'll actually pay, looking out for another one of those deals, is probably your best bet.

Not very good. FafaFofo just bought one, an 08 I think, with higher mileage for about that. Doubt you'll get a 10 or 11 for $15k. I don't think there's many difference in the 08 to 11, though. The 12's have some new shit, though.

My best advice is to find one you like with lower miles and what you want on the interior. As for the exterior, fuck it. I don't care what you think now, you're going to want to lift it, get new wheels, bigger tires, etc. Depending on how big you'll want it, maybe get a Rubicon bc it comes with bigger axles than a regular Jeep. That said, if you're going to 37's or bigger, even Rubi axles won't be enough so you'll end up having to replace them anyways. Just know what you want ahead of time and plan accordingly so you don't end up wasting a ton of money on stuff you will change later.

yeah the biggest issue with me would be the mileage, a lot of the jeeps in or around my price range have a shit ton of miles. More than the car I have now and I've had many trips back and forth from south florida to tallahassee

Well, you always have the option of yanking out the engine if it goes and putting in a HEMI. :fap:

    Here's the install kit.

    http://www.aev-conversions.com/shop/shop-by-category/powertrain/jk-hemi-kit.html

Not sure on the engine, but probably 5-10k, I had to guess.

Fafa Fofo and I were talking earlier. I could easily build a $100k Jeep. Figure $40k for a ballin new JK and then $60k in upgrades. I'm talking HEMI, lift, wheels, tires, brakes, lighting, steering, etc. Definitely could get to $100k invested in one. The thing is, I don't even like going off-road that much. It's cool every once in a while, but I'm not going off-road every weekend. I'm not going to go beat up my Jeep just to climb over a rock for shits and giggles. That said, I do like the idea of knowing that I can go anywhere I want if I so choose. If I go off-road, I like there to be a destination. Not just climbing shit to climb shit. I want to go through shot to get to a secluded lake or beach and camp for the night. I'll end up with $10-12k in upgrades in mine and be happy with it. I'll do that over a few years.

We bought an '08 from my in-laws last year, fulled loaded Wrangler with the X-package, hard and soft tops, etc. It was $24K book value, but we got it for $17K. One of the few shots you have at a deal like that, so we took it. And have been VERY happy.

I see 2000 models for around $8-10K in our area, so it's going to be tough to find something for that amount. That said, it is a car that can be tinkered with quite a bit, so unless it's major, you can do a lot of the repairs yourself to save money.

    Very nice.

I had a buddy in college who drilled a hole in his center console and installed a plug, would fill it with ice and use it as a cooler. It was very handy on trips and when cruising the beach.

Dbl is correct. I got an 08 with 97k, for 16k. Shopped a ton and really found the "Jeep's hold their values" bit to be spot on. I figure I should get another 60-80k miles out of it, and will then purchase AEV's Hemi conversion to a 6.4L and have basically a brand new Jeep. Of course by then I hope to have the lift, axles, wheels, tires, bumpers, and winch in place.
