So this is a reason I have to travel alone. I told one of my friends I was thinking about going TYW and to look it up on youtube. His response, "that doesn't look worth it man, you can do that on lake meade in arizona or devils lake in missouri" Yea my friends have no idea what it's like to travel/party in Europe.
Alright so if I do this I need a hostel in Split for a night on the way in (I guess close to the airport or wherever I need to be for TYW) and one on the way out for a night. Then I need one in Rome for a night that's not an expensive ride away from the airport. And go!
I am really tempted to order one of these for the hell of it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/12MP-Full-H...086?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aa8472d36 Has all the same specs as a the new GoPro except it's not 4K quality. And it's $70. If it sucks, i wasted $70. If it's not bad, I saved like $200.
It's about $50eur anywhere inside the loop. We didn't know it was going to be that expensive but we we had no choice.
For a room? I don't have much of a choice. I can't find a flight from Split to Rome that I can jump on my flight from Rome on the same day. Flight home leaves too damn early in the morning.
I got an apartment in split the night before. Pretty nice but way too expensive for just you. I'd ask your boat mates about their itinerary. I stayed at The Yellow in Rome immediately following TYW. The hostel was awesome but it's a party place and we were trying to wind down and just do touristy things
It's official. I'm going to Yacht Week. Thanks for the hook up 47 straight Also, on the way out. I land in Rome at like 6pm on the 5th and leave the morning of the 7th. So I have all day the 6th to sight see in Rome. What are my essentials in one day? I have to see the Coliseum even if that's the only thing I do. But should I be able to do more than that?
The Yellow set me up on a 4 hour walking tour called "ROMEing All Over" . The guide was young and looked like Mac from Always Sunny but he's Irish. Related very well with our age group so I'd recommend it. It's like 20e but it was a good tour. Go see the Pantheon. If you don't do a walking tour, at least research the Pantheon so you can appreciate how awesome it really is. Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain (though both were under construction last year, hopefully it's done now) were cool. There are catacombs near the Coliseum if you like that sort of thing. Skip the Vatican as it takes a full day on it's own and I enjoyed the walking tour + my own tour around Rome more than the Vatican. Others may disagree but whatever.
Met up with a buddy yesterday afternoon that I had not seen in a while. He tells me he's going to Cuba next month. He's flying to Cancun, then buying a separate flight from Cancun to Havana. He said he's heard of people doing the same thing from Bermuda. Interesting thought, could be a way to get there for a reasonable price until they start having regular flights from the US. I know flights from NOLA-->Cancun arevery cheap, and it's only a 3-4 hour flight. ATL is similar.
The walking tour and stuff is all I really want to do. Could I do a walking tour and the Pantheon and Colliseum?
I sent my family my bucket list and my mom sent it back to me with stuff she wants to do (the ones with dates, I've done already) 1. GREAT WALL OF CHINA 2. DUBAI / TALLEST BUILDING IN THE WORLD (multiple times) 3. EASTERN EUROPE (2013) 4. ANGKOR WAT 5. GREEK RUINS (ACROPOLIS, ETC) (with mom) 6. ROME (1 DAY IN 2015, DOES NOT COUNT) 7. GALAPAGOS ISLANDS 8. AUSTRAILIA 9. GLACIER NATIONAL PARK (with mom) 10. YELLOWSTONE 11. ALASKA (with mom) 12. THE GREAT PYRAMIDS (with mom) 13. Some will only be me and my mom, some will be all 4 of us.
Had a convo with my cousin about this this week. There is no "destination" in the world I'm LESS interested in than this. It came up in a reddit post and it looks like such an awful time.
I think a lot of folks feel that way. I'm just fascinated by ancient history and fill like I really need to see those before I die. The list isn't in order of importance, so they are pretty far down the list. Well down as far as they can go and still be able to take my mom.
Yea I had this misconception as a kid that they were in the middle of the desert and you had to travel many miles to get to it.
Yeah, same. I didn't know until I saw this video. Blew my mind. Not sure why it took so much of the allure out of it but it did.
I mean that does take away from it, but I'm sure before long it will be like that around many historic sites.
true, but I guess I kind of assumed you got in a jeep and went an hour into the desert and build anticipation until suddenly you can see it in the distance and it's this serene historic place. instead it's the luxor in vegas or the bass pro shops in memphis
New Zealand tell her to add a slash or something... She probably doesn't know how ridiculously sick it is (mine wouldn't). There's a reason every movie filmed that is supposed to look other-worldly is filmed there.
Laser pointers were the big item when I was there. They acted like they had split the atom with that technology. That said, those guys also have drugs. Same as the guys on the beaches of Barcelona
BamaNug or anyone that has been to Thailand before what kind of shirts do you guys wear over there? Right now I just have a few cotton t-shirts to go along with a few pair of golf pants to help protect against the heat but should I invest in some lighter weight shirts as well or just worry about that when I get over there as things will be way cheaper?
Nothing special, just the same type of t-shirts I wear over here. I brought 3-4 t shirts and 1 polo, be sure to bring at least one pair of pants for temples and stuff. I don't think you'll need more than 1, you'll never want to wear pants unless you have to. You can definitely underpack because tourist t-shirts are cheap as hell over there, and you can get your laundry done for like $2. It doesn't matter because you're going to be sweating your balls off everywhere you go, just have to accept it. There's no A/C anywhere, and you just always sweat. You get used to it.
I wore tank tops to the temples and the heat still got to me. Granted, I was coming from 40 degree pleasant weather to 100 degree and humid temperatures. I distinctly remember walking the bridge from the main entrance to Angkor Wat, and being genuinely concerned i was going to have a heat stroke. Its kind of funny looking back at it now but I remember thinking, "oh my fucking god, im going to die in Cambodia before i even step into Angkor Wat. If i have a stroke right now, theres no 911, im fucked" lol. Luckily I didnt die, and i had couple bottles of water on me so i chilled in the shade for a few then proceeded to be blown away.
Stop talking about temples and heat and start talking about how you guys are going to this with each other ***NSFW*** http://deadspin.com/leicester-city-stars-film-depraved-thai-orgy-featurin-1708024692
favorite comment on above Space_Man Leicester City has announced that Pearson, Hopper, and Smith are to be suspended indefinitely, starting immediately. Team officials cited their own internal standards of professional conduct, which requires that all players film potentially embarrassing videos in landscape.
This is like the same price as going cross country in the U.S. @TheFlightDeal: #Airfare Deal: [CM] Washington D.C. / Chicago / Boston - Rio de Janeiro / Sao Paulo, Brazil. $490 r/t. Info: http://t.co/ca6T5Ctoh4 #travel
So they are opening this in Mecca. Wow. http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2015/05/30/world-s-biggest-hotel-to-open-in-mecca.html
You guys ever been to any cool resorts in places like Arizona or Utah, a bit off the beaten path so to speak?
Who are the guys that have been to Iceland in here? Was it sterling A? can't remember. Flights from NOLA-->Reykjavik for March 2016 are <$1K right now. March looks like a pretty good time to go, and would be so tight to rent a car and drive around the whole island over the course of 7-8 days.
