Well the "make fans happy" part is subjective. So you can't glean much from that. If George were hired I think they'd use "home run" or something similar to describe the hire.
Hah, that's not going to make many people happy That screams "small time", even though it doesn't mean it's a bad hire.
Story I was given was reaffirmed this past week by multiple people. Its not Whitman, FYI, and yes would be a "home run" hire.
So, we got a 2017 commit (Javon Pickett) but he's a 3 star with unimpressive offers. Is Sturdy saying anything about him being better than his ranking?
I have no faith that the athletic department will make a good hire. The athletic department and the school in general have a remarkable lack of leadership currently.
Well that was shittastic. Inexcusable that we lose by that much even with the injuries. Who's our next coach, realistically? Would Chris Mack even consider coming here?
Do you honestly think we'd fire Groce? I mean... we don't even have an AD right now. And 5 of our top 7 players have had surgery. Abrams out for the year. JCL missed basically all of preseason practice. Leron might be out for the year. Thorne missed a month and a half. Nunn missed a month. And I'd be shocked, but excited if Mack would take the Illinois job. He's Groce's buddy for one and I think after Miller left for Arizona, Xavier is now a stepping stone job to blue blood programs. We were once a blue blood, but we're an afterthought now.
Honestly, probably not this year. We just shouldn't get blown out like that, even with guys out/missing time. Was hoping to see a little more improvement this far into the season.
Everything I've seen from "insider" sources have all been saying the same thing he is. George or Tiley. Both are fine with me
I guess that's a good sign, since both would be ok with me, too. I just don't know if there's an Illinois beat writer that's very well-connected, so I'll probably remain skeptical until it comes to fruition
He's succeeded massively at everything he's done. From what I can tell George is a good fund raiser but has CU athletics really improved under him? George's reluctance to fire a really bad football coach kind of scares me too
George was smart not fire to MacIntyre this year, most fans agree that he needs one more year. Mac inherited a worse football program than Illinois, think about that. We would be pretty devastated to see George go.
You don't say. On the outside that looks horrible, agreed. We have made progress every year, just can't seem to get out of our own way in the 4th quarter. ANYWAYS, I would be shocked if George left. I'm sure he and you guys hold some nice nostalgia for Champagne, but in all realty it is a dreary afterthought in a crumbling state. Good luck with your search.
Like buffs said you really have to look deeper than that. I'm not sure if you're aware of how bad CU football was when MacIntyre took over. And in the last 2 years we've lost 9 games by a TD or less, 8 of those in the PAC 12. So while the record may suck, it could very easily have been very different. Regardless, you couldn't Fire MacIntyre after last year, expecting a coach to turn CU around in 3 years after what he took over was completely unrealistic. And this is what RG has done to improve the football program...
Sweet jesus this will never end. If we wind up with someone not named Tiley or George, there's no excuse as to why this took so long
They made a long serious run at George, who I know for a fact was listening, which is why it is taking so long. Will be interesting to see how it plays out. If it's Michael..oh boy.
Tiley or bust but I heard he might not be able to take over until the summer which would mean another year of Groce
Groce is getting another year at this point even though it's a complete shit show right now. It's tourney or bust next year for him however. Let's the timeline extension is working out details with Tiley
I can confirm former @IlliniFootball player Josh Whitman is the new @IlliniAthletics AD. Whitman will be introduced on Thursday. @cbschicago
Weird how so many individuals have improved, but the team hasn't shown any growth... until playing an awful Rutgers team tonight
Its because they don't play any defense because Groce is a bad offensive coach but a horrific defensive coach. The 2nd half was a lay up line for Rutgers when they cut the lead down to 12.
Valpo is running away with the Horizon League Title again and doing it with defense and rebounding, the way you win in the Big 10. Please fire Groce and bring in Drew ASAP. I really think Drew with Powell and Dee on his staff could bring in huge recruiting classes over the next couple of years and get us right back where we want to be in short order. If I have to suffer through another season of Groce next year I'm going to vomit.
I also think not having a PG is a big reason why the offense sucks. And yes, it'll hurt big time if we pass on Drew and he becomes a star
The offense sucks because of bad shot selection which has been a hallmark of the Groce offense for 4 years now. When those bad shots go in, we score a lot of points and sometimes win games (like at the start of his tenure when Brandon Paul and DJ Richardson couldn't miss for like 3 months). More often than not the shots don't fall and we have 8-10 minute stretches where we score 8 points and end up losing.
At this point I'm convinced he's getting one more year. So I'm hoping Drew stays at Valpo one more season
Leron Black arrested for aggravate assault for pulling a knife on a bouncer last night. Guy is 6'7 and 220 lbs, why would he need to pull a knife on anyone?
Only 3 of 65 power programs have failed to reach Sweet 16 or 8 football wins since January 09. Illinois, Colorado & Wake Forest
Yes, we're in a unique ring of hell. Colorado and Wake haven't dealt with the off the field bullshit that Illinois has... or at least I'm pretty sure they haven't. They certainly haven't seen the likes of Tim Beckman.
