I have it 23-10. Really bad matchup for Iowa with Sorensen a sure loss and extremely likely Kemerer as well. Iowa needs two wins from Carton/Sorensen/Kemerer/Brooks/Stoll to have a chance, can see Carton but the others I don't. 125: Gilman DEC (can't wait) 3-0 IOWA 133: Clark MD 7-0 IOWA 141: Gulibon DEC 7-3 IOWA 149: Retherford MD 7-7 157: Nolf DEC (could be a major) 10-7 PSU 165: Joseph MD 14-7 PSU 174: Meyer DEC 14-10 PSU 184: Nickal DEC (Think Nickal wins, but could be 1 or 3 bonus) 17-10 PSU 197: McCutcheon DEC 20-10 PSU 285: Nevills DEC 23-10 PSU
We'll be down 10-0 after three, I have no faith in Jimmy, would love the upset at 125 but Gilman is just too experienced. Retherford does what he does- Sorensen doesn't have an answer for him. 10-4 Safe bet Kemerer takes down Nolf off the get go. 10-8 Cenzo wins dec. 11-10 Morelli by dec 14-10 Nickal by mj 18-10 Cutch dec 21-10 Stoll by dec 21-13
im very excited for this meet. Going to be a great environment at Carver hawkeye and Cael will have the boys ready to go. feels like we haven't wrestled a whole lot to this point too, so lots of tests.
PSU-OSU should be a fun one if everyone is healthy. I've got it 5-5 on matches but obviously PSU will be racking up the bonus. OSU needs Micah to beat Zain or MyMar to beat Nickal. Neither will happen. 125: Suriano TF--5-0 PSU 133: NaTo MD--5-4 PSU 141: Pletcher DEC 7-5 OSU 149: Retherford DEC 8-7 PSU 157: Nolf FALL 14-7 PSU 165: Joseph TF 19-7 PSU 174: BoJo DEC 19-10 PSU 184: Nickal DEC 22-10 PSU 197: Moore DEC 22-13 PSU 285: Snyder MD 22-17 PSU IOWA-OSU won't be as close. Snyder won't be wrestling which never helps. 133, 141, 149, 165, 184 are the ones that can go either way, I gave 133 and 141 to OSU, OSU will have to win two of the others to win IMO. 125: Gilman TF--5-0 IOWA 133: NaTO DEC--5-3 IOWA 141: Pletcher DEC 6-5 OSU 149: Sorensen DEC 8-6 IOWA 157: Kemerer MD 12-6 IOWA 165: Gunther DEC 15-6 IOWA 174: BoJo DEC 15-9 IOWA 184: Brooks DEC 18-9 IOWA 197: Moore DEC 18-12 IOWA 285: Stoll TF 23-12 IOWA
What's the story with Snyder during that time I thought you or SugarShaun was saying earlier Snyder and another starter wouldn't be there for PSU? That was about two months ago. BTW some douche is selling lowers for $194.00 a piece on stubhub for Ohio State/PSU not even mat passes. I will mostly likely go so if you guys want to meet up at a nearby restaurant let me know. I won't wear my glasses because I can't afford to replace them Gunners.
Snyder is wrestling in Russia January 27-29 at the Yarygin, and February 16-17 in Iran at the World Cup. Remaining Duals: Jan 22 - Maryland Jan 27 - Iowa Feb 3 - PSU Feb 6 - Rutgers Feb 10 - Nebraska Feb 12 - Minnesota Feb 17 - NWCA Championship Dual Series So obviously he misses Iowa and NWCA Championship. My guess is he very likely skips Maryland and Minnesota because he travels shortly after. That leaves PSU (5 days after tournament in Russia) Rutgers (8 days after tournament in Russia, 10 days before tournament in Iran) Nebraska (6 days before tournament in Iran) My guess is he wrestles against Rutgers for sure and probably PSU. Unlikely against Nebraska because the team is probably leaving around then. He probably has 1-2 matches left before the B1G, 3 matches at B1G, then 5 at NCAAs. He is 5-0 on the season currently. Looks like a 14-15 match season for Snyder.
Also I'm looking to amend my Micah Jordan vs Zain Retherford prediction. I think Micah can go with him on his feet. Obviously I give Zain the edge on their feet, but Micah is no slouch there. However, Micah's biggest weakness is his bottom game. Nobody in the NCAA (and maybe the USA) is tougher on top than Zain. That could spell disaster for Micah. I think Micah is underrated at #5 in the country at his weight class, but Zain is just a terrible matchup. Changing my prediction to MD or fall.
Sammy Sasso Top 5: Iowa, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State and Nebraska. #6 in the country for 2018, don't know about other schools, but Tom Ryan has really made him a priority as of late. I think Iowa, VT, and OSU are probably the favorites from what I've heard, but who knows.
Go where? People love to piss on Zain's neutral game because his mat game is A+. His neutral game is just as good. I mean he was a world champ in cadets and has only gotten better, finishing third at 65kg these past trials. Micah is no slouch, certainly, but one is borderline Olympic caliber and the other is what...Top 20?
I think you misread my post. I think Micah is elite on his feet and I said I still gave the edge of Zain there.
I feel like Bo is bad on the bottom too, that's how Zeke got him. Why is that for both brothers you think?
Initially I thought no way, but Tavanello missed the meet at Wadsworth. He probably would have to leave for Russia the next morning.
It's been a program-wide issue, really. Could be that OSU coaches aren't as experienced or don't teach it enough, but it seems like it has been a constant as of late. JDJ, Myles, Bo, Micah...all have had issues on bottom, hammers on top.
The thing about Retherford now is everyone is prepared for him to choose top whenever he can. We saw that after Stieber Part I. Only thing is very few can stop him in the other phases - Stieber being that exception.
I was thinking about how good he is--has he even been challenged since the losses to Stieber and Port at NCAAs 3 years ago? I recall he had a close 2-1 match with BJ Clagon which he won with RT at the beginning of last year in the Rider dual, but after that I think the closest has been the 4-1 one sided match against Sorensen. His dominance reminds me of Brent Metcalf. No one thought he'd lose a match after dominating his first two years, but he ended up losing to future MMA stars Darrion Caldwell in the NCAA finals his junior season and Lance Palmer at the B1G championship his senior year. Not saying he loses, but I would bet against him going undefeated the next 1.5 seasons if I was forced to bet on it.
The Clagon match was weird. Clagon hung on the edge and every time Zain got in on a leg, he dove out of bounds. Ref simply let Clagon do what he wanted. Metcalf could always be taken down by other elite wrestlers...remember Bubba Jenkins took him down several times before he would gas. Retherford is much more disciplined IMO but equally dominant.
Unless a Nolf or a clone of Stieber arrives I would be surprised if ZR loses, no homer but he is totally different then his freshman year and that's saying a lot - the record from the start that year and win over Stieber. Dudes built like a tank and on a mission. Much what we're seeing from Bo Bo this year. It will be interesting to see Sorensen's tactics Friday night? Does he sit back or attack? My biggest fear is the first three matches, can't get gutted there. The closest thing Suriano has seen to this is a couple of decent NCAA guys and Lee. We have no answer at 133, reminds me of throwing Conaway out a couple of seasons ago against Ramos. Then you have Jimmy who waits till Valentine's Day to start wrestling.
IOWA-PSU Whiteboard War: http://www.flowrestling.org/video/1068875-white-board-wars-penn-state-vs-iowa#.WH_oVrYrJE5 Saylor: 19-14 PSU Bader: 18-13 PSU, has Kemerer beating Nolf and Gulibon beating Carton
His reasoning was basically "Nolf isn't going to go undefeated the next 2.5 years, he will lose at some point, what better time for a freak loss than against #2 in the country at Carver-Hawkeye?"
Kemerer is a solid wrestler in fact if there was room at the inn, who knows? However while I think he can takedown Nolf beating him is another story trading 2's for 5's will most likely be the story. Only way I see it going Kemerer's way is if Nolf shuts down.
Wonder how this affects strategy of teams like Iowa--do TnT pull Marinelli's shirt now that there's an opening? Is Okie St the presumptive favorite now that PSU's getting 0 at 141? We could see PSU get 100 points just from 4 weights, I tend to think they are up there in the top 2, but this certainly makes the race more interesting.
It makes pulling Hall's RS more appealing if you want to win a Natty. Or you drop Jimmy and fill 141 with Moss.
I see next to zero chance of that happening--would take a complete change of heart from all parties involved.
A few thoughts: -I don't think anyone is touching Zain the next 1.5 years. He's locked in mentally and with his style of wrestling I see it tough finding anyone to challenge him with the current 149s out there. -Nolf has a better chance of pinning Kemerer than losing to him. That's just a laughable prediction. -PSU can still compete without a 133, but it severely limits the margin of error for the natty hopes
Snyder said today that he is wrestling in the Maryland dual this weekend at 1 pm and he has a 6:30 flight to Paris. Wouldn't shock me if they start at 285 to accommodate. He also said he is wrestling against PSU, confirmed that he is missing Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota. Said that he is leaving on Feb 8 for Iran but didn't say whether or not he'd wrestle against Rutgers on Feb 6. So looks like just Maryland and PSU then B1Gs and NCAAs.
It's not super rare for redshirts to travel and even weigh in. Myles Martin did it last year early in the season, although he did end up getting his shirt pulled. Again, I'd still be surprised, but obviously there's a lot more smoke now in the last two days and looks like a real possibility. Another fun rumor is that Nick Lee moved in with his grandmother in State College and might enroll this semester to immediately become PSU's new 133. Again, unlikely.
Nick Lee has been in State College since last spring. That's not a rumor. He actually completed his high school curriculum last summer online and has been training with the NLWC ever since. He's not even enrolled in college yet. Hall who knows. His travelled before but hasn't weighed in contrary to what people think. He did 'wrestle off' this past week, which is a first, but again...who knows. We will know soon enough.
I said when Hall committed "Cael's ego" Kid is obviously ready, probably more prepared then Nickal or Nolf was at this time during their first year on campus. With the Cortez injury I wouldn't doubt anything, it could be Cael just showing his hand and then pulling it back. I didn't know about Lee (IN) until today. It's obviously preparation for 2017-2018.
Very impressed by both Suriano and Gilman. Suriano will have his time but he never came close to taking Gilman down.
