There is no such thing as authenticity and if you think reviews are based entirely on "quality" of the music at publications like pitchfork, even as defied by an individual reviewer, you are very naive. I can say with 100% undisputable certainty that Bon Iver wouldn't have sold as many records without that review. The degree to which that is true you can argue about, but without that review I can guarantee you record store and distributor orders, blog attention, college radio play, podcast play, other media outlet reviews, etc. do not happen the same way.
Don't know why but I've been listening to "The World's Best American Band" multiple times a day lately.
Hey thanks Pepperoni. Woke up and listened to Emma because I've been saying for Emma forever ago since I've read your review posts.
Try this next: BUT MAKE SURE YOU READ THIS FIRST: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/18812-r-kelly-black-panties/
Mark I am team Pepperoni on anti review. I posted about a month or two ago when someone was asking for reviews. I don't get why people like them but they do exist for a reason, because people eat them up. It's groupthink and predictable. Regardless loved Bloodbank and then For Emma but anything after I am not a fan of. Will check out the song, won't read. Last but not least the only reviewish site I like is albumoftheyear.org. It allows me to browse, by genre, and I check out more music that way, personally. I'm an old man I've calmed down quite a bit it my older age, do enjoy dad rock and not ashamed of it.
if you don't like the beatles and/or rolling stones then you're doing music wrong or you've never actually listened to one of their seminal albums and merely know them from the songs you heard on the radio growing up
Daisy is amazing, everybody just shit on it because it wasn't The Devil and God, which is practically perfect.
Brand New have been one of my favorite bands since summer after my freshman year of high school when I remember picking up Deja Entendu after it came out at Target with my mom. I had almost nothing in common with my roommate freshman year of college, but we bonded over a love of Brand New and ended up living together for three years, including through the release of Devil and God. Somehow, I never saw them live though; didn't really go to concerts in high school, no bands came through South Bend when I was in college, they toured sparingly my first few years after college. I saw them live for the first time at Coachella 2015 not really knowing what to expect; I thought the show would be a bit heavier given the trend with Daisy, but the show was so overwhelming in it's intensity there was almost no time at all to come up for air. It was incredible. I couldn't believe it was the same band that wrote "Soco Amoretto Lime" that me and my roommate would drunkenly sing together in college. I've seen them again since and going again this fall and strapping up for whatever happens in 2018. This was the setlist: Mene Sink Gasoline Millstone You Won't Know Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades Okay I Believe You, but My Tommy Gun Don't Degausser Jesus Sowing Season
They were up there with My Morning Jacket as the best live show I've been to when I saw them last summer. My mind was legitimately blown. As you said, the level of intensity they maintained throughout the entire set was unbelievable. I've never listened to Brand New I used to be a metal kid and as such anything "emo" was anathema to me. Sounds like I really missed out
It's not too late, man. They haven't been "emo" since their first album imo. Just great album after great album since then. The Devil and God is their best work, and it includes my namesake, so you should start there.
I agree, but answer this for M'ark Pepperonio: did you decide the music was good by yourself or did Condé Nast tell you to like it even though it really sucks?
It doesn't matter. The fact that it is getting good reviews automatically disqualifies it from being good, regardless of whether your opinion was formed before or after having heard said positive reviews.
Thee Oh Sees aka Oh Sees will release their second album of the year in November. They will do so under the name OCS the title track from the upcoming album (titled Memory of a Cut Off Head) is linked below
I've never listened to a song by that band and probably won't. Instead I'll just wait to see which mall-emo or American apparel sampler band you guys bring in here next. My money's on Good Charlotte.
Think of the worst, most insufferable music snob you could possibly come up with. You're basically a caricature of that person.
1. Radiohead 2. Animal Collective 3. Kanye 4. LCD soundsystem 5. Clap your hands say yeah 6. Vampire Weekend 7. Xiu Xiu 8. Fiery Furnaces 9. Tune yards 10. Joanna Newsom
I never listened to them at all either and I couldn't name a song. I'll give them a spin when my well runs dry.
I love it when someone tries to tell someone else that the music they listen to sucks. It's one of the most objective art forms in the world. I can enjoy "Party In The USA" by Miley Cyrus and also love "I Need My Girl" by The National and that's ok.
It's one of the things I've always loved about this thread and the main group that has posted here for years. I'm not going to love everything that gets posted here, and not everybody's going to love what I post in here... but chances are, at least a few dudes are going to dig a song that gets posted. That's kinda what this is about. Sharing music. Getting super hung up on the term "indie" and setting your own parameters that you believe the rest of the thread should follow because that's what makes you happy is really lame.
I see your point. To help simplify this process, I would be happy to screen all potential posts before they're allowed in. Posters could also apply for a waiver annually where they could post at will by sending me a link to their collections on discogs.
The average pitchfork rating of my real list isn't as high as those bands and I don't want to jeopardize my (infinite) credibility.
kinda douchey to come into a thread insulting others' taste when you won't even subject your own proclivities to the same scrutiny
Without getting into the other stuff, he consistently offers content ITT. The Priests album he recommended not long ago, "Nothing Feels Natural" is awesome.
