Not really. He was hired on December 30 so he literally only had one month and he did take Nolan Ulizo for the OL in the last week when we couldn't get anyone else. He also landed the only productive players in that class in that month in Grant Perry, Karan Higdon, Zach Gentry, and Tyrone Wheatley. And Wheatley was one we always wanted to transition from being a jumbo tight end into being a tackle but he apparently refuses to even though with his body type and athleticism he'd probably had have had a good shot at getting drafted.
Hey pianoman you forgot to give a valid excuse for why a team with 11 draft picks couldn't finish above 3rd in the division.
So only having 14 players in the class and a shortage on OL in no way falls on the shoulders of Harbaugh who was hired with a month left in the cycle and all falls on Hoke’s shoulders? Jesus. Bill O’Brien was hired amidst a shit storm in the second week of January, had no NCAA connections, and landed 8 recruits in a class of 21. This is amazing spin.
Not to mention that class was a full 2 classes ago. Every single Freshman and Sophomore were signed by Harbaugh, but yea that one bad class 3 years was the reason they finished 4th in the division.
No I've answered every question you've asked even the one about why we finished third that year. It was answered earlier in the thread when you laughed that I called that placement a questionable spot. You meanwhile won't address how taking only 31 players over two classes is a detrimental thing to a program. Yes every single sophomore and freshman and they were phenomenal last year. It was the upperclassmen who were trash. This may come as a surprise to you but most teams rely on their upperclassmen.
Right... my point was one was a huge nfl name and another was a no name coordinator taking over a scandal ridden program yet Jim wasn’t capable of finding more than 8 guys for that class or more than 1 OL and it’s an acceptable excuse? That class is counted as “their guys” for legit every other hire in cfb but for Michigan it’s Hoke’s class/problem.
So rain and a bad spot? That's what you're going with? Final answer? Only taking 14 is on Jim. He could have taken more, he just chose not to. Many other coaches have come in under the same situation and most take m ore than 14 kids.
I'm so confused as to why so many people who have nothing to do with Michigan waste so much time arguing about him. People in here purposefully make themselves as stupid as possible in order to argue with Michigan fans for hours about how they should feel about their coach. That seems weird.
If there is ever anything outside of my favorite teams that I talk about as frequently and obsessively as you talk about Harbaugh, I would be perfectly fine with someone holding an intervention.
1.) Not sure they had much of a choice. Once MSU saw the O'Korn was shitting his pants, they sold out against the run. Michigan wasn't going to be able to move the ball on the ground, and they were trailing, so they had to keep trying to throw I think. only hope was that O'Korn pulled it together and hit one of the numerous receivers they had running open all day. Funnily enough, the one time he actually pulled something out of his ass and threw for a TD, it got called back. 2.) Turns out it would have been nice to have some extra guys to try and make the tackle. Having said that, it's pretty ridiculous to the blame the punt formation when there were so many other things that deserve blame first. But I don't have a problem with calling the normal punt formation anyway. That's what you practice the most, and they didn't need to do anything at all but not completely fuck up the snap.
You're an Alabama fan. Michigan has had nothing to do with Alabama in football outside of maybe a couple recruiting battles for almost 20 years. At this point, you have to have wasted at least 100 hours on TMB trolling and arguing with UM fans in different threads about Harbaugh. The reason you do this is because some UM fans said they would rather have Harbaugh as their coach than your team's coach a couple years ago. That's it. That will always be weird to me. Apparently it isn't weird to you. Here we are.
I said some really dumb shit in 2009. You STILL bring it up regularly. You realize this is the same thing right? You're just upset that your fanbase is on the other end of it.
And yet Higdon ran for an average of 5.4 yards per carry when his long was only 12 yards from the line of scrimmage. So you really think the better plan was to push all in with O'Korn's arm during the sideways rain than go with the guy who was chewing up yardage? Obviously, that was Harbaugh's plan. That's why Higdon had only 12 carries. Seriously... Look at what Higdon was doing in the second half while down only 14-10. MSU wasn't stopping him. Despite that, Harbaugh thought it better to give Evans some rushes and O'Korn lots of passes. That made absolutely no sense whatsoever. I'm confused that any UM fan can argue that having two gunners against no returner was not a mistake. Your left gunner didn't even have an opposing player over top of him. MSU had way too many unblocked players bearing down on your punter. Heck, even your right guard and right tackle merely chipped and released. And what in the world were they releasing to? Sure, the bobbled snap probably wasn't going to result in a successful punt anyway. Probably but not certainly. Regardless, an extra guy or two back there very well could have resulted in a recovered fumble or Jalen Watts-Jackson being tackled well before the endzone. Not only that, but perhaps your punter bobbled the snap partly because he was so nervous about not having adequate blocking.
Harbaugh has not met expectations, regardless of the explanations and spin from Michigan fans. With that said, Michigan could be a really good team this year if Patterson plays to potential. They have two very good young WRs. Higdon is a decent RB. The offense should be much better. The defense has potential to be outstanding. They return all four starters in the secondary from the nation’s number one pass defense. The front seven has NFL talent and is well coached. I’m glad we have Michigan at home.
They won't blame Harbaugh for anything. They'll make an excuse or say they are content with the outcome. The whole thing is weird. He's above negativity for them.
You're a smart guy so this post is just beyond weird. You practice normal punt coverage the most bc you see normal punt return the most. You do realize they practice max protect though right? They are allowed to adjust to max protect when they see 11 men in the box. This is the equivalent of saying you should run a base defense against a hail mary attempt bc you practice base defense the most. You don't see how absurd that sounds? It's a game of adjustments and the UM coaching staff didn't adjust. That's 100% on Harbaugh.
The answer is yes, Harbaugh makes too much money. Much like Saban and Meyer too. That money should be going to our educators, not people coaching a game that will be extinct in fifteen years.
I'll still laughing at that one. Sure they had 11 in the box to block the punt on the last play of the game but that doesn't mean we should have done anything different than what we normally do.
Remember when MSU was dominating before the weather hit? I do. UM is lucky the monsoon came - kept them in it, built in lifetime excuse.
Y'all have it. For the record I am a Michigan fan and would take Saban or Meyer in a straight up trade
I really dont believe dblplay1212's description of Michigan fans' opinion of Harbaugh is apt to that comparison. I imagine he's taking some comments that say something like "I think Harbaugh's ceiling is near Meyer/Saban" as a declaration that we wouldn't make that trade. But I haven't been keeping up with this thread, so maybe there are some M fans that honestly rank JH higher. Not what I'd expect of the TMB fan base though ...
You literally said you were ok with calling normal punt formation vs an all out block on the last play of the game bc that practice normal block the most.
It was a different thread but multiple posters, mostly UM fans, that said they wouldn't trade Harbaugh for Saban or Meyer. Many argued he was a better coach bc of what he did in the NFL, as if that's relevant when discussing college coaches. I don't feel like wasting my time but the posts are out there.
Again I doubt the conversation was as 1v1 as you make it. Perhaps immediately after the hire there was an argument to be made, but certainly even those fans can reflect on the last 3 years and come to the obvious conclusion. Holding up those statements as a survey of where things are at in 2018 is not an honest assessment ...
I said that the formation isnt the first thing to get upset about on that play. There are several other things to gripe about first, even with a normal punt formation called. And even then, they still would've been fine had the punter not bobbled the snap. Should they have called something different? Yes. Was it the main reason that play went horribly wrong? No.
If those posters would say he hasn't lived up to their expectations instead of making excuse after excuse for him then we could all move along. But UM fans still say he's a top 3 coach and that they wouldn't trade him for anyone. That's ludicrous. He's a good coach but it's laughable to put him on the tier with Saban, Meyer, and Dabo. Those 3 have accomplished Harbaugh probably ever will in college.
The punter may not have fumbled it if he wasn't rushing to get if off bc he knew he didn't have enough blockers.
Michigan, as a team, only averaged 2.6 ypc in the game. I'm not saying that Higdon shouldn't have gotten more carries, but it's also naive to think he'd still have a 5+ ypc average with more carries. That's typically not the way things work. Higdon is a good back, but he's probably not putting the team on his back at that point in his career. Many of the runs that got stuffed would have gotten stuffed just the same with Higdon as the back. Chris Evans was absolutely atrocious in that game though. That's definitely true. He had a weird season. He was just coming off of a 7.0 you 2 TD performance vs Purdue, so I don't think it's some mortal sin that they were trying to give him the ball. Either way, my lasting memories from that game are receivers running open and O'Korn failing to hit them because he refused to stand in the pocket, and bailed at even a hint of pressure. It's tough to get upset about the playcalling when the plays were open.
Sure. Lots of things could have happened. And almost all of them are more likely that what actually happened. I never said the normal punt formation was the best play call there. Just that that it's down the list on things I have a problem with on that play. I don't see why you have to take every post and turn it into some extreme black and white statement. That's not typically how people think.
