Probably going to "solve" the case in 1980 next episode and pin it on the wrong person is my guess.

Y’all notice the two glasses on the table when Old Hays goes to the interviewers room? Who is she drinking with?

I mean the season in general. I can’t keep track of what happened and when. Young Hays, 90’s Hays and old Hays

The last question seems obvious no?

the son called her by her first name when she was previously badgering his dad. Seemed weird. Then Hays saying “don’t tell my son” I think sealed it.

    My high thoughts/theories so far.

    1. Hays killed Dan O'Brien with Roland(?) and the left his remains in the woods. Makes sense with Hays hallucination with Amelia last week. He wasn't really shocked either when the director lady(Eliza) showed him photos and gave him new evidence. Hays Jr is sleeping with Eliza as well.

    2. I think Lucy Purcell has to do with the disappearance with Julie Purcell. The kitchen scene was weird to me... It involves the people at the chicken factory. The CEO is off in Africa supposedly. CEO took Julie as a replacement for his dead daughter??? Maybe the CEO/ boss is real father??? Lucy wanted a better life for her kids so she agreed to hand them off. Lucy has a history of sleeping around and slept with her bartender boss, also the grandparents speculated on the paternity of the children. Another interesting note was the black guy with the weird eye worked at a chicken factory line too.

    3. They will blame the Trashman for the kidnapping/murder in the 80's. Hays knows it wasn't Trashman and wants to keep investigating destroying his career while Roland keeps going forward to keep his career moving.

    4. Suspicious of Amelia. She knows more than she is letting on(opportunist) and is definitely hiding things. She completely avoided the question about her family.. I thought the first date was brilliant foreshadowing to their marriage/relationship. The only connection between Hays and Amelia is the case.

Great episode. Slow, but a lot of information. I suspect the action will start to pick up in the next few eps.

Just some random thoughts.... Hope the trashman fucks up the white trash dudes. I suspect a shootout and the trashman to possibly die. Don't remember seeing him in the 90's/2015 scenes. Maybe they pin it on him after he dies? Also think Roland gets shot, possibly at the trashman shootout? I just remember Hays saying, "If I was clumsy enough to get shot, I would be on the golf course everyday". Amelia pisses me off and she def knows much more than she says. Purcell parents are both great actors. Scene with Mrs. Purcell and Amelia in the kitchen was just great TV. Can't wait till next Sunday.

That's possible but I definitely would not say it was obvious. The son seems very concerned about him talking/doing the doc at all, especially once they began questioning the merits of the investigation and basically a huge part of his father's legacy. I took it Hayes' statement of "Don't tell my son" as him saying- I want to work on this with you but I know my son will try to prevent us from working together because he thinks you are trying to smear me/my life's work.

You could very well be correct, though. The son's relationship with her would explain him allowing his dad to even participate in the documentary... you'd have to think if a son knew his dad was in a vulnerable deteriorating mental state that he would need a LOT of extra motivation for him to let his father participate in that. It would also explain how someone like that was granted access to his dad, since I'm sure people request interviews about that case all the time- why was she the one to get to sit down with Hayes? Or maybe Hayes is so obsessed with the case he's willing to do anything to get some closure?

Lots of avenues this could go down, but definitely an interesting theory you've put out that may very well be correct.

Thoughts on how the story culminates in the old man Hays timeline? I think the multiple timelines adds a certain tension and interest, makes it easier for the show to develop characters and story while slow playing plot, but to me there is an annoyance with the current timeline that basically nothing good can come of it, so far it’s just an exposition on how shitty it is to grow old and lose your memory and become a burden to those around you. We all got parents and grandparents. I don’t need prestige TV to teach me that or make me explore that. I assume they are building to something but it seems a fallacy that he can “solve” anything in his current state so what is there left for him to do in this timeline?

I feel like right now after this past episode that we’ve got just enough “slow burn”. We’ve got a nice idea of who our characters are, we’ve got reasons to question enough of them and we have every timeline headed in the right direction. If it continues into episodes 5 I’m probably gonna be disappointed

Hayes made a comment in an earlier episode to the effect of, “maybe if I’d been smart enough to get shot I would’ve ended up with the promotion,” so Roland got plugged sometime in the 80s storyline. Possibly during the ensuing shootout.

Meh, the son and doc lady theory actually has some support from the dialogue, the other was all based on background set dressing. I don’t know if Hayes Jr is boning her, but there does seem to be some backstory between the two as it relates to the interview/investigation that hasn’t been fully revealed yet.

Great episode. ❤️ The trashman incident.

Will be curious to see how Dan O’Brian was involved to the extent that Wayne/Roland decides to kill him. Or perhaps they just fucked up and killed the wrong guy.

Also interested to see how the planted evidence/coverup lead to the officer’s (who apparently was the other non-Vietnamese person in wayne’s vision) death.

I also wonder how much Lucy was involved with the disappearance and potentially Will’s accidental death. Someone who cared for or knew will put him in that pose. Seems like something she might do.

Very good episode. Only complaint is the we didn’t get the big break. The phone call was a piece but I don’t know that I’d call it a big break.

Season 1 was one of my favorite seasons of television ever but the ending felt extremely rushed. I feel like the slow burn of that season led them cramming half of the more “concrete” elements of the plot into the final two eps. I think the ending felt lacking as a result. I fear like the same thing could happen this season. Wish they’d give them 10 eps and a bit more time because these guys are great storytellers.
