When asked if he’d been working on a new album, Sturgill responded, “Always. Been working on two or three. Just stocking the ammo up. Mostly been focusing on … I think I’m going to coach some PeeWee soccer, run for sheriff or something. Walk around with one pant leg tucked into my boot … I don’t know man, I make [albums] and then step away. The rest of it has nothing to do with me.”
The movie is produced by Simpson and set entirely to music from his forthcoming album, also called Sound & Fury. The film and the album, from Elektra Records, will be released simultaneously.
While the idea of new Sturgill music sounds cool, I'm also equally afraid it'll be some weird, unlistenable stuff. He's capable of putting that out. ETA: I liked “Dead Don’t Die.”
“We went in without any preconceived notions and came out with a really sleazy, steamy rock n roll record. It’s definitely my most psychedelic,” Sturgill Simpson says of the new album, which he self-produced. “And also my heaviest. I had this idea that it’d be really cool to animate some of these songs, and we ended up with a futuristic, dystopian, post-apocalyptic, samurai film.” https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/sturgill-simpson-announces-new-sound-fury-album-and-film/
Universal Pictures has pulled the marketing behind a new horror film called The Hunt which features Sturgill Simpson as a major cast member. Still set to be released on September 27th, and first announced on July 30th, the film and its promotion have stirred controversy over the last couple days due to both the political nature of its subject matter, and the two recent mass shootings in El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH causing some to criticize the promotion and plot of the movie as being insensitive and potentially incendiary... Despite the controversy, release of The Hunt will move forward, just not the marketing and promotion of it. Universal chose to suspend marketing in response to the recent mass shootings, and before President Trump’s comments. https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/promotion-pulled-from-the-hunt-movie-feat-sturgill-simpson/
September 27th. It being billed as Americana rock instead of country. "On the album, Simpson previously said: “We went in without any preconceived notions and came out with a really sleazy, steamy rock 'n' roll record. It’s definitely my most psychedelic. And also my heaviest." Not sure how I feel about that. A Sailor's Guide to Earth is a really important album to me and I hope that he doesn't get too far away from what I personally think makes him so great. It's his art though and I'm going to give the entire album a listen and a chance regardless. My expectations are more subdued now however.
I dig it. Has a little Black Keys vibe to it, and it's a song you can just cruise to with the windows down.
