People forget Matt Rhule had his team do Oklahoma drill during pregame warmup on the road against duke abd got SMOKED
The players seemed to love the guy when he was Miami's interim HC. Curious to see how the hire works. Hope it does because he seemed like a good guy.
The suit looks so weird on him, but my god Man Campbell continues to deliver elite press conferences.
Those quotes are going to get all the play and I get it, but if you watched/listened to the presser he just came off as a really genuine guy who was nervous as hell. That quote I think was part of a 20 minute intro where he talked before even taking a question. He was jacked about the opportunity and he's speaking to a screen in a Zoom presser. I have no clue if he can be a good HC or not. Lions' history says he won't. He came off as well in that presser as any coach I can remember, though. And I think the Zoom thing made it a lot harder because you can't hear reaction to anything. Both he and Brad Holmes did on Tuesday, honestly. Both of those guys might be way in over their heads, but their pressers definitely made me like them a lot personally and want to root for them. That's about all I ask for at this point.
He sounds exactly like he did when he was the interim coach of the Fins. He dominates press conferences with smash mouth coach speak. His first week on the job included Oklahoma drills. Had the entire team fired up for the first couple weeks. Then Bill Belichick did Belichick things and the wheels quickly fell off. It went from "it's fun to feel like I'm playing HS ball again, to I'm not getting paid 10 mill a year to do Oklahoma drills on Tuesday" real fast. The question isn't if Dan Campbell can say the right things, it's whether there is actually any substance behind the sounbites. I hope he crushes it because he will because him behind a microphone will always be entertaining, but IMO he's a substitute teacher that can whip a team into shape for a 2-3 week stretch, not a long term solution.
hell yeah. we've tried boring, smart, and asshole, but we haven't tried crazy yet. Let's see what happens.
I think the Lions need a guy like this. He's a former Lion so he understands this franchise's history...something Quinn/Patricia had no interest in and totally overlooked. He really needs some good coordinators around him. Hopefully, he has the right connections to make the right moves. You learn as a Lions fan to never get your hopes up. But, Spielman, Holmes, & Campbell have me slightly optimistic.
Every team that has been kicked in the teeth could use a guy like him. The problem becomes what happens if the results don't immediately follow? the rah rah physical coach speak only goes so far when Aaron Rodgers is dropping a 50 burger on you. He needs another move than "let's do the Oklahoma drill and remind ourselves what it means to be tough" I hope he developed it over the last few years.
He had no experience as a HC, inherited a 1-3 Dolphins team in 2015 and went 5-7. Not too shabby right out of the gate. Yes, Bill Belichick got the best of him & Aaron Rodgers will likely get the best of him a few times. Those guys have a history of doing that. He's not a X's & O's guy, so like I said, hopefully he hires good coordinators. Looks like Aaron Glenn will be the DC.
It's not that elite player/coach got the better of him. It's what happened after that should trouble you. There was no adjustment to getting kicked in the teeth. It was the same kind of speeches and the same "physical" practices. The players quickly said fuck it and gave up. Maybe that will be different considering hes the HC and not an interim, but this is easily one of the most risky HC hires in the NFL in quite a while. Like I said, I would love it if it worked for the entertainment value, but I'm not hopeful.
Yeah...I hear ya, but he's speaking to Lions fans right now. Let me drink my Kool Aid while I can before this organization beats me into a pulp again.
I don't get the media fascination with the six-year thing. If he does well, he'd coach most of those years. If he does great, he'll get all of them. If he sucks, he'll get fired.
In the grand scheme, it's a minor thing, but why tie yourself into paying a risky option for 6 years?
They didn't tie themselves into anything. They can fire him after one year if they want and go hire another person. This is like looking at NFL free agent contracts and taking them at their face value when we know nothing matters beyond the guaranteed money. The six years thing just seems like something people who think the Lions should have hired someone else are focusing on. And it's fine if people think this is a bad hire. But the reasons for it have nothing to do with how long his contract is reported to be.
