We were shopping for fridges this time last year and I was surprised to see multiple models that have a camera(s) inside the fridge so you can check your fridge from afar.

I can totally see that being helpful, but man - I'd expect that to break quite quickly.

The bad thing about Samsung Front loader washers is the design. They use 2 different metals for the spindle/tub piece. The tub will be stainless where the spindle piece isn't. The stainless will then attack the other metal and the spindle will fail w/in ~3 years. At that point it's cheaper to replace than just repair the spindle because you have to take the whole entire washing machine apart to fix it.

Just stupid design and for that reason I bought an LG Top loader and still have the old Samsung dryer that's going on 10 years old now.
Had the heating element go out on the dryer ~4-5 years ago and she was using that as justification to buy a new dryer to match. I said fuck that bought the $10 heating element part put it in and the dryer is still going strong to this day.

Yes lots of people have. Rates are higher than they were a few months ago but they're still in the 3's which is quite low historically.

Edit: Not trying to be a smart ass so I hope I don't come off that way. Not sure how many folks in here have refinanced recently but tons of people still are doing so. And if you aren't having a good experience on a refi then you need a new lender. True for purchases too but refis are generally pretty simple and stress free.

    :rain:
Hate all of them but went back to GE profile on latest round of renewals.

to make all of you feel better about your situations, here is my crap out list over the last 1.5 years:

    HVAC unit
HVAC ductwork (condensation required replace shortly after package unit replace... still not sure if contractor screwed something up on install)
    Refrig
    Dishwasher
    Dryer
    Range
    microwave

    :rain::rain::rain::rain::rain:

HVAC was 1999 unit and range was 2008 but most of other stuff was less than 5 years old

Saw a comment about smart ovens... did upgrade to a smart range and I’ll be honest it’s real nice telling Alexa to preheat oven to 350 and bake for 10 mins or whatever. Also got a smart dryer just because most higher end stuff has smart tech, but no idea about the use case unless you like a phone notification that things are dry so they don’t wrinkle... but WFH = dgaf. Refrig is not smart but again I don’t know what I’d use that for.

Average Raypak heater gets replaced 4-5 years. They used to be tanks. Then they changed the metal for the cabinet and frame and it is highly susceptible to oxidation. Smallest leak on a Raypak and the cabinet and framework starts rusting. Once it rusts through, it is an unsafe furnace. You can not do a repair on it or you become liable for any rollout and subsequent damage as you repair a heater that has drafts different than the manufacturers design.

They heat okay but get deteriorate quickly if a drip leak is not quickly noticed.

Gotcha. That’s a shame. My understanding is they have the fewest internal moving parts which actually seems like a very good thing for longevity. I ended up with a Jandy when I replaced last summer, we’ll see how it does. It has that bypass technology that seems like a good idea, but yet another moving part...

Jandy’s JXI series copied the Pentair MasterTemp design (and before that Sta-Rite Max-E-Therm which Pentair acquired). They added the bypass that no other pool heater/manufacturer deemed necessary up until they did it. In cold weather events like we just experience in Texas, that bypass technology froze before heaters without it making people winterize their equipment before they needed to and expose themselves to other potential damage.

Fortunately for you, you live in an area where true winterization takes place before the that issue can occur.

Once upon a time they were the gold standard for efficiency and longevity. Then the only changes they made were for the worse as others passed them by. Instead of innovating, the cut costs to make up for lost revenue as other manufactures passed them by.

winterization is a must here. Less of a concern for sure. Conceptually passing less chlorine and salt containing water over the copper makes sense for longevity. My understanding is some water still gets through though. But still, I think it makes some sense. Until that part breaks lol

Yeah, paper version looks great. Maybe it has to do with where I live but pool equipment gets absolutely abused here. Triple digit temps, freezing temps, 6” rain in a day, no rain for 6 months. I have long thought that Texas should be the testing ground for new pool equipment/beta tests. If it can make it here, it can make it anywhere.

The best long term bet for pool equipment should be KISS mixed with proven innovation. Pools combine plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, and chemical. Any one of those things is off and stuff starts going downhill fast.

Raypak should have doubled down with their design when other manufacturers went to LoNox/contained furnaces. Instead of cutting losses, they should have invested more in metal and raised prices and showcased a solid tank furnace while others went with more movable parts in LoNox designs.

Of course, this is just my opinion. Yet, I have recently had to remove a 30 month old Raypak AMSE heater due to a warped heat exchanger... That is exactly the thing an AMSE is designed to prevent. And that was after the heater melted 3 boards, 2 under warranty and 1 not.
