Ditched the Snoo and ~4 month old slept 12 hours first night. He has been an incredible sleeper. One tip I have for new parents wrt sleep with a newborn is google/follow wake windows and sleep cues. I don't believe wife and I had any idea about it with #1 and think he was perpetually overtired. Looking back what we thought was colic very well was an overtired fussy baby. When you are in or close to that window and they start rubbing eyes, yawning, red eyes, put em down. Like everyone figures out eventually once they are overtired it's going to be harder to get them to sleep and likely worse sleep.
Yeah we put our daughter down everytime she rubs her eyes. She’s been a fantastic sleeper. She doesn’t nap at day care and sleeps from 6-6 on week days. Seems like she catches up on the weekends cause she sleeps all the time. Wake for an hour, down for 2. Repeat.
My 8 year old told us this morning that her friend told her Santa isn't real because she caught her mom putting out presents after when she was supposed to be asleep. My wife did a really good job spinning it saying it was probably just last minute presents the parents were putting out which I'm pretty sure she bought but I'm sad as that is a little piece of childhood innocence going to be gone. I think we are good this year but I fear it's over after that. I just hope she doesn't ruin it for her little brother.
7 year old asked that question recently Caught me way off guard cause it was out of the blue I think I played it off well cause a couple of weeks later he asked to call santa so we did and he left santa a sweet message Damn those other kids at school
I used to work with a guy that was Muslim and used to have very good conversations with about beliefs, etc. He had kids and obviously they didn't do the whole Santa thing but he always made sure his kids didn't ruin it for others at the school. Respected the hell out of him for that. He always just told them they needed to play along.
The best part is it never ends and you can’t weasel your way out. It doesn’t get better, it just gets different. And this is why I’m on a low dose ssri.
my daughter has an obsession with the tooth fairy(and fairies in general really) for some reason and some kids at school told her it was just your parents taking the teeth and giving you money which has lead to some scrambling and haphazardly written notes from the tooth fairy by me. >:
My wife would make notes from the different magical creatures for the kids but would type them so as to not have handwriting be suspicious (but where do they get a computer and printer?). Either way she typed something up from the tooth fairy 6-8 months ago. Oldest got onto her computer for some reason and she had closed everything out but somehow the letter popped up and we had to come clean. It really killed me. He's done a good job of shutting the fuck up so the others are still good but man that made me sad.
My son lost his second tooth. Me and the wife forgot to get it and put money under his pillow. We blamed it on the dog.
It’ll get better, try and get him in a schedule then he’ll start extending. Ours wasn’t a bad sleeper but when wife went into hospital i got him on a regular schedule over the course of a couple days and it made a world of difference. Some predictability really helps the psyche. Of course those babies know the tit pheromones and any crying and mama cant resist it. Was a pain for her to listen to what sleep schedule I got him on and it was working so don’t fuck it up. She of course didn’t listen then he regressed a bit then had to transition him back like i had initially done.
Also as said earlier look for the visual cues, rubbing eyes, ours giggles excessively at anything before he gets fussy for sleep, etc. Some nights we do bedtime routine anywhere from 630-730 pm based on his cues and how he slept at daycare that day. If he naps good he pushes the 730 timeframe. If not he gets cranky earlier hence earlier time. Just wonder when the middle of night feedings will go away and he sleeps through. Always about 7-8 hours in he wakes up chugs a 4 oz bottle before going back to sleep within 5-10 minutes. Minor inconvenience at night but it usually coincides with my having to piss at night window so nbd for me. Wife thinks it is the end of the world every night for her when she’s taking on the deed.
So if I put my wife in the hospital I can get some sleep? Also does anyone else's 3 week old sound like he's undergoing an exorcism when they sleep? Is he possessed? I'm too tired to even Google how to become Catholic.
Haha, she had her gallbladder taken out as she was passing gallstones during pregnancy. Had to wait until the uterus shrink down so they could perform the surgery. Don’t get me wrong i was tired during that time but the sleep windows allowed me to get stuff done around the house or nap with him and get a full sleep cycle in. (1.5 hrs for me)
Tobias are you following any sort of method? Taking Cara Babies? Can’t really start any kind of sleep training till 8-12 weeks I believe it is but they lay the groundwork like infected donkey said. Schedules, cues, soothing methods. Someone posted a google drive link for Cara babies awhile back but I at least got the pdfs for newborn stage I can PM if you want.
Get back to me after a year and you’ve moved on from the joker and become a zombie from the walking dead.
We used Huckleberry and timed the sleep windows (still do actually) and it worked really well. Some of his early wake windows were a little shorter than we thought which led to some longer periods getting him to sleep, but overall it was great. We didn’t do the premium. Just figured out how long each wake window should be and timed it from when he woke up.
Yea we did a lot from 0-12 months, now that he is getting older, we are really only tracking sleep. But it was fantastic to be able to pull it up in the Dr. office and say, yea he is having 8 diaper changes a day averaged for the last three weeks, or knowing pretty closely how much milk he has had over the last few days. I really liked it when he was teething, we could track when he got any motrin or tylenol so we knew when he had his last dosage. Its a really solid app.
They make it pretty easy. Open the app, hit two buttons and you are done. For us, it was really helpful tracking food specifically as we had to induce early due to our son not growing enough in the womb, then the problem continued when he was born. It took a month or so for him to start putting on significant weight.
daughter has rsv she isnt in any discomfort. no fever or anything and eating normally. just has a brackish cough. doctor said her oxygen level is perfect and her breathing doesnt sound labored. got an inhalant prescription and going from there
RSV has been something fierce here. My buddy's 1 week old had to be life flighted to the U of I hospital a few weeks ago with it. Also my 18 month old nephew spent a week in the hospital with it and just got out Tuesday.
son had rsv when he was about 6 months old and spent 2 days in the hospital. it was miserable, definitely feel for anyone going through that now with little ones.
Changing daycare is rough. Old daycare was like a 4 minute walk from home, new daycare is a 15 minute drive. Kid never fussed about getting dropped off since she started going there at 3 months old. Now she starts crying about halfway through the drive.
my nine month old had rsv over the summer. bad cough, low grade fever, trouble keeping her big bottles down but otherwise was fine after a week or so.
Just got the ultimate dad compliment. I am in the front yard everyday playing baseball, football, soccer, tag, etc with my kids for hours. While fun, it can also be tiring and annoying being pandemic best friends with a 6 and 4 year old. A neighbor probably 4-5 houses down (that I don’t know) stopped on her walk and said “I see you out here everyday with your kids playing all kinds of sports and games. You are out after work, on the weekends, sunny, cloudy, whatever. Your kids are so lucky to have that. I don’t know you very well, but I’m so glad to see such a good father in the neighborhood.” Not gonna lie…it got a little dusty getting acknowledged like that.
When your kids get old enough to appreciate it take one on trips if you have the means to do so, especially when they are preteen/teens It's like hanging w an entirely different person when they are away from home and friends. Double points if you can institute periods w no phones for either of you. Signed, Old dad
Anyone built their own little learning tower thing? Basically it’s a stool with some rails to let your kid climb up and see whats going on in the kitchen? I found a pretty cool design idea using an IKea stool. https://happygreylucky.com/ikea-hack-toddler-learning-tower-stool/
Built? Nah. We did buy one though that also folds down into a desk. He’s currently more into running around than hanging out in the kitchen during meal prep, so it’s not getting much use these days in that particular form, but they’re cool
That kid better be doing something athletically amazing. You can't let your large adult son go to waste.
The only day care in our area that is 100% mandatory vaccine has 4.5 additional WEEKS of holidays vs our current day care. We tried to see if we could do it but no chance
Going to be needing a new baby monitor. Anyone you guys really like that has video? Our old one took a shit...
