To your fetty wap reference: I never really understood why trap houses were called trap houses. Like it seemed like trap house were where the drugs and guns were. But where does trap relate to all that?
Housing projects that only had one entrance/exit where drug sales/production occurred so it was a literal trap. It evolved into if you were making money or next to the trap. There was a decent vice episode on this I think. To quote Nicki Minaj about her song "Beez in the trap" “It just means, ‘I am always…’ you know, that’s our slang way of saying, ‘I beez doing such-and-such-and-such.’ So it’s really like, ‘I am always in the trap.’ Now, the trap, ladies and gentlemen, relates to anywhere where you get your money.”

And that usage of "trap" came out of Atlanta originally. Eathan's explanation makes sense, but I don't know where the slang came from.

I had always heard that trapping and dealing were synonymous because of the trap of addiction - once you get them hooked, they are trapped and keep coming back for more. And trap house came from that, not the other way around.

Let me clarify something before you continue. I treat 4chan the same as Pornhub. It’s possible to visit just to look at the porn. Not read or participate in the comments. Was trying to give an example without having to overshare but that clearly didn’t work. So to avoid being grouped in with what you mentioned above (which is the scum of the earth imo) I’ll share. I’ll occasionally go to 4chan specifically for the On/Off nudes thread. Mainly because I’ve seen two people I’ve known in the there before. I gloss over/scroll past all the hate and ignorance typed out in 4chan threads. I used 4chan as my example yesterday because unlike Pornhub it’s the only place I’ve seen “Trap” as a porn category. Not knowing it could be an offensive term I used it in post. Trying to apologize/explain why I used it to those who were offended by it, I mentioned 4chan. Naturally, everyone dialed in to just that. And I apparently was lumped in as typical 4chan poster. And I’ve never posted there. My posting history here over the last decade shows that I’m not like that at all, not particularly political, and not a troll of any type. So again, I apologize to anyone offended by me using “trap” and again to all those many more that reacted to seeing 4chan. Not everything is sinister or hateful. And it is possible to have a simple misunderstanding. Hopefully we can get back to the fun stuff in this thread now.

I always assumed that there will be etymologists in the future who use urban dictionary and know your meme as historical references. i want to be the first phd in the study of 1900s slang. edit- I googled and found Tulane offers an “Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in City, Culture, and Community” So that might be the closest thing available now.
