In the turf industry we have a saying: “You can grow great Bermuda grass by poking it with a stick.”

I have no idea why the previous owners planted these hydrangeas behind taller hedges such that they are hidden from the frontal view of our house. But they are pretty.

Anyone know when I can put either starter fertilizer or even weed and feed on new sod??

Think I'm too late of premergent (zoysia). But have some centipede grass poking up in spots. Trying to hand pull that now, I hate that grass

But the label for the weed and feed will let you know how many days out you can apply so it won't interfere with new seed / sod. You should apply the starter fertilizer as soon as you finish your project or right at the end before you lay the sod. Look into Mesotrione (sp?). It's a active ingredient that won't interfere with new seeds.

i'm starting to recognize the necessity of paying attention to soil ph

applying lime was great for the lawngrass, but i have some dogwoods and azaleas that were planted too close that really didn't like it

Hydrangeas get big, they were probably planting on having them to eventually be taller than the shrubs.

That will look nice when they fill in.

A granular fert with some Sulfate around the base should help. Half or quarter rate around the dogwood since that’s less of an acid lover.

Lawn equipment question here. My lawn mower will start to bog down and eventually shut off if I'm on a hill tilting in a certain direction. The same bill facing the other direction is no issue. First 2 seasons it had no issues at all, but just starting doing this and progressively getting worse. Any ideas?

My mower has some problems and I started a new job with more hours so for first time in my life I'm paying someone to mow my lawn. My god they do such a better job. I planted like 10 trees recently; was out of town this weekend and was super excited to get home to see how they were doing (especially the 2 cypresses). I'm fucking old

Also have a crabgrass problem. Is there a specific chemical for that or should I just round up the shit out of it and put sand over dead areas? TIA

Have you checked the fuel filter? Could be dirty and that’s what’s causing your mower to cut off. Might not be enough flow into the engine.

Seems to be that are the pick up if it only happens on one side. I dropped the cap from a gas can into the mower tank 12 years ago, still going strong.

I have shit tons of clover, thistle, and geranium in my yard. Just getting into more lawncare stuff, but what’s the best way to wipe it out now? Spray the whole yard with weed clear?

Decided the scragly gardenias were never going to thrive so I dug them up and replaced them with petite knock outs. Here are the before and after pics:

Finally planning to put the dethatcher to work this weekend. What can I overseed zoysia with after? I can't seem to find any zoysia seed around here... just Bermuda and tall fescue.

Been busy as crap with work and life so I had some delays. Finally got my sprinklers back on and the backflow is leaking. Guy came out and said due to age it’s hard to know if fixing it for a couple hundred bucks is worth it compared to replacing it (and hopefully not worrying about it for awhile).

Been lucky with temps and rain, but feel like I need to get this done soon. Just not dying to spend 500-600 bucks because I’m cheap lol

For what it’s worth, valves are super easy to fix. They are basically a very sensitive diaphragm that opens and closes. 90% of the time any issue I’ve had with a valve was remedied by taking it apart and washing out the crud that had accumulated on top of the diaphragm.

I definitely would not be overseeding. You’ll end up with blade and color mismatches. I’d just try to push the growth with Nitrogen. Use a pro plugger from flourishing areas to supplement thin areas.

Good deal. I was getting conflicting answers online and the lawn not being uniform was my main concern. Not familiar with a pro plugger.

they’re amazing despite being made of 12 dollars of plastic.

look into the pro plugger. Basically just enables you to transplant. I typically backfill the holes I steal from with pure sand.

One of my 8 roses rapidly died. 2 of the others have a lot of yellow leaves and arent doing well. My guess is they are getting too much water. I may switch to watering them less and just every other day or less.

So between super short battery life and equally long charging time on the dethatcher, it took me pretty much all weekend to get just the main front yard done. Still have the side yard and back yard to do. Luckily I had plenty of other yard things to do while batteries were charging. Added 5 white hydrangeas to my pink ones, planted 6 autumn beauty gardenias, 3 little gem magnolias(only 2 pictured), and 2 agapanthus.
