Zimmer watching Sean Lewis run an elementary RPO spread will probably give him a heart attack or result in a fight They're going to be off the field so damn quick that his defense will be gassed by mid 2nd quarter
I normally like Bomani, but this take is so bizarre. ESPN Gameday was at a JSU game this year for no reason other than him. He brought more attention/excitement to HBCU football than anyone ever.
Absolutely nobody will drag bitch boy for all his bullshit about the life and culture of HBCUs being everything he needed Wish they would though
The standard is ridiculous. It would be a fine counter to an argument that no one is making — that Deion “fixed” HBCUs — but downplaying his unprecedented impact because he over promised is crazy. Agree to disagree. More televised games, better ratings, tremendous earned media. A rising tide lifts all boats.
Your mentions of "the standard"(?) and gameday appearances don't seem to have anything to do with what Bomani said
The point: admitting that he did a lot of good but questioning his *true* motives for doing that good is a purity test that doesn’t really seem to be the a standard applied to any other coach (or athlete for that matter).
I don't think anyone is downplaying what Deion did for Jackson State. But your trickle-down economics to all HBCUs argument is flawed. Deion being at Jackson State isn't going to improve enrollment at Grambling State, it isn't going to fix some of the systemic issues at Southern University, and it sure as fuck isn't going to make it easier for black HCs and assistants at HBCU's to jump to P5 jobs much less G5 positions. This was always a 1 of 1 experiment with Deion because Deion is a singular force of nature in many ways.
Seeing through the bullshit Deion was selling is not "questioning" his true motives, at least not the way I understand it.
think it's premature at best to say he made a lasting impact anywhere other than JSU Bomani seems to be approaching the topic from the perspective of an individual who felt/feels like deion was disingenuous. And for those people that took him at his word, because they weren't aware he's been a tireless self-promoter since he was a sophomore in Tallahassee, his take undoubtedly resonates do you think that HBCU's will continue to be covered like they were the past 2 seasons Do you think he opened up doors for guys like Willie Simmons who has gone 10-2 in consecutive seasons at possibly the worst run athletics department in the country? Are HBCUs gonna start signing blue chip.players?
Deion's black Dabo Swinney with this evoking god at a drop of hat nonsense. It's insufferable and so predictable.
That’s fair, but I think any possible impact was always a matter of scale. No matter what he did, he couldn’t “fix” HBCUs.
This is pretty much it. Deion positioned himself as a savior for HBCUs on a calling from God then bailed immediately to a doormat program in a 90% white town the second he got an opportunity. For people who know that Deion was, is and will always be 100% about Deion this wasn't surprising but I get why others bought the bullshit and are disappointed
Presuming it was “bullshit” is the issue. It would be one thing if he professed grand ideals and did nothing, but he did more than anyone else ever has from an exposure standpoint.
I knew Deion would do this, and I still find it slightly disappointing. Any long-lasting change for ALL HBCUs would have involved Deion sticking around that league for 10-15 yrs. We all know Deion wasn't going to stick around Black College Football for that long. But some ounce of respect for JSU and those folks would have been nice. Instead he's treating them like yesterdays news.
He cares so deeply about Jackson State that he's going to gut their roster on the way out so these young men can help build their community in [checks notes] Boulder, CO
Colorado football is going to be fascinating the next few years, and I hope Deion lives up to the hype.
Contextualizing Deion's rise at JSU and parlaying that into a gig at CU isn't being "chock full of hate". It's calling out a grifter for being a grifter. I know that Jesus talk isn't going to fly in Boulder if Deion starts to go in a tailspin.
You've got dozens of posts bitching and being a cunt. Oh no he's every single football coach everywhere.
If you're going to criticize Boman's take on it, I think it's worth at least listening to his pod yesterday where he dives into all the stuff he did in that CNN clip, except he did it for 20 minutes instead of 2. Bomani talks in his podcast about how Jackson State being an HBCU gave Deion something to recruit to, and Deion absolutely used that. And people really rallied behind him with that when stuff like Travis Hunter happened after mainstream media was sitting there going "what the fuck?". And now, a year later, Deion is probably taking all his best players (likely Hunter, included) from that school to the power 5 job he just got. It's hard to blame Deion for taking the job, but it's also kind of hard to look at the sales pitch he's made the last 2-3 years and think Deion really believed a lot of it. And he's going to do the same thing as Colorado. The difference being that Colorado doesn't mean anything to anyone who isn't an alum there. Jackson State and HBCUs are different in that regard.
Sounds like you can't take any criticism about your new HC. That usually doesn't bode well for a fanbase.
My sample size is admittedly limited, but I don’t think JSU folks are as betrayed as it seems everyone else thinks they should be. I also thought this was pretty good: https://hbcugameday.com/2022/12/04/...al-promises-at-jackson-state-was-that-enough/
Also because Deion came from the black college football ranks. This isn't like every single football coach everywhere. Simply put, you do not know what you are talking about, and it's showing.
I would bet CU’s hired more Black head coaches than anyone over the last 10 years (4). We’ve replaced Black coaches with Black coaches. Deion commented on this in his presser. But yea, Boulder it’s a predominately White community so I guess that means he’s selling out or something. I get it, many people (not you) want him to hang around in HBCUs forever as some kind of martyr while coaches like Chadwell are fine to leave their communities behind to pursue more. I haven’t followed Deion’s career until the last few weeks and maybe I’m off base, but theres no mystery here. Deion will get what he can from CU and move on quickly.
